It's a spoon
Pros: Long length, sturdy material, skinny end fits well into a jug, hard plastic doesn't scratch up metal pot or gets hot Cons: None, it's a long spoon.

Works great. Stays hard even when in hot wort. Dont have to worry about using a hot pad to grab spoon.

Perfect spoon
The 24" plastic spoon is perfect for stirring malt extract. It helps keep it from scalding to the bottom of your brew kettle. Also good to stir-in hops so you don't get a boil over. I used it to stir in dried orange peel and coriander for my Summer brew. Good all around stronger than you would think. One of the most used brew-day tools. Get yourself one now!

I purchased this same spoon at a local store. It was not in a bag and was hanging from a rack. My concern is if it had the smallest scratch could it possibly be a killer to my wort before I even know it?

BEST ANSWER: If you're using this before or during the boil, you've got nothing to worry about. If you want to use it post boil, I'd get a stainless one. My spoon is six kinds of beat up and I'm still using it 4 years later. I use it to stir wort while chilling, so I just drop it in the kettle a few minutes before end of boil, never had a problem.
