Fermtech Wine Thief

This is a thief you'll actually want in your home! Sampling beer or wine is easy with the 19" Fermtech Wine Thief. Allows you to draw samples and take a hydrometer reading at the same time. Faster than using a regular test jar, it lets you return the wort to the fermenter with less risk of infection, cutting down on losing any of your finished product.

  • Efficiently draws wine and beer samples
  • Also takes hydrometer reading simultaneously
  • Sanitize the unit before use, then take a sample, reading and then return the sample back to the fermenter
  • Note: doesn’t fit smaller ½ to 1-gallon carboys

easy gravity readings
Great, inexpensive upgrade. I've been floating the hydrometer right in the thief. It has really simplified the gravity test for me.

Great product !
My hydrometer that I ordered from Northern Brewer fits perfectly into this theif. If sanitized correctly you can return the beer back into the fermenter. I like to "sample" the beer to see how it's progressing.

Gets the job done
Very happy with this purchase. I had been sampling using a turkey baster and it was always somewhat messy. The turkey baster bulb also deteriorated over time. This works great for pulling a sample out of a carboy, Big Mouth Bubbler, or bucket, with minimal spillage. My only quibble would be that if it had a slightly wider diameter, I could float my hydrometer in it and would not need a separate container. Nonetheless, I am quite satisfied and recommend this product highly. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Take care as a grape skin can clog the delicate nozzle.
Works well extracting skin-free must or wine, but not for taking a sample of the must directly out of the primary fermenter. That's why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. If used to extract the grape must for reading specific gravity etc, the nozzle will tend to clog if attempting to insert the wine thief into the primary fermenter with skins.

which hydrometer fits inside this?
L I on Sep 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The triple scale hydrometer will fit.
How does this work (to take a sample). What is going on at the end? What is the outer diameter, will it fit the hole in the bucket fermentor with or without removing the rubber grommet?
C H on Mar 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This works by submerging the tube into your wine, beer, or whatever you are sampling and just let it fill up. To speed things up or increase the volume of the sample without having to dip the tube to the bottom of your fermenter, you can shake the thief up and down which pulls more sample with each successive "pump", while a check valve stops any wort or must from draining. This will not fit in the hole of a bucket fermenter, you will need to remove the lid to do so. The diameter is 1".
