Hop Plugs

Whole hop flowers pressed into large 1/2 oz. plugs, vacuum-sealed in light- and oxygen-barrier bags. Less susceptible to oxidation and easier to work with than whole hops, but the lighter processing leaves more lupulin glands intact than with pelletized hops.

*Columbus

Typical alpha: 10 - 12%. Very pungent aroma, clean bittering properties.

*Crystal

Typical alpha: 2.0 -4.5%. Like Liberty and Mt. Hood, Crystal is bred as an American-grown substitute for Hallertau Mittelfrüh. Crystal is regarded as the best of the three. Suitable for all lagers.

*Glacier

Typical alpha: 5.8%. Intense, pleasant resinous, citrus, earthy aromas. Great for English and American ales.

*Palisade

Typical alpha: 6.0-10.0%. A dual-use hop bred from Swiss Tettnanger and grown in Washington. Spicy and earthy; its aroma reminds some of Willamette.

*Simcoe

Typical alpha: 12.0 - 14.0%. Used for its aromatic and especially for its bittering properties due to its low cohumulone content.

*Sterling

Typical alpha: 6.0 - 9.0%. A newer American-grown hybrid with a unique spicy flavor that is reminiscent of both Saaz and Hallertau. Sterling is gaining favor in some breweries for its fair bittering potential and excellent aroma and flavor.

*Vanguard

Typical alpha: 5.0-7.0%. US-grown hybrid with Hallertau Mittelfruh parentage. Sweet, slightly spicy aroma and flavor.

*Warrior

Typical alpha: 14.0-16.0%. Super-high alpha hop with low cohumulone. Aggressive bittering hop, but with its citrus-and-spice character it also does well as a finishing hop.
