Product Details

Made from premium oak, these toasted oak spirals increase extraction of aroma, flavor, and tannin by their greater surface area. Add to barrels, tanks, or carboys; suggested dose is 2 sticks per 6 gallons, but you can snap the spirals into smaller portions to adjust to taste.

Imparts good flavor in a short amount of time
I used these in primary for 10 days. The flavor was very prominent when I racked to secondary. Depending on the final product, I may go with the light roast in the future.

Adds flavor fast
The oak spiral seems to add oak flavor much faster than chips, presumably due to all the exposed end grain of the spiral. However, I much prefer the medium-plus or heavy toast versions of the product. At a medium toast, I find it imparts too much of a raw oak taste. The suggested dose of 2 sticks per 6 gallons is also a bit high for my tastes. I prefer to use one stick for a longer period of time in a 5 gallon batch.I use these mostly with brown ales and let them age in secondary for several months. Can be added straight in to the keg.

Great Alternative to a Barrel
I used these in a barley wine since I can't afford a barrel of my own. They have been in the secondary for a month and the beer already has a nice woody aroma. I'll update the review when its ready.

Can you give the dimensions of these spirals?
A shopper on Jan 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Each spiral is 1 inch in diameter and 8 inches long. Once they've been in a carboy full of wine they swell to approximately 1 1/4 inch in diameter.
Can these be re-used and/or re-charred?
A shopper on Feb 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The manufacturer indicates they are exhausted at six weeks. You certainly could re-toast them if you had to, but I suspect they would drop more particles into your product, and since the price is so low, it seems like false economy unless you were in a desperate bind.
