Product Details

1.5-2°L. Hailing from Cork, Ireland, Malting Company of Ireland has made high-quality malts since 1858. MCI started as Beamish and Crawford's floor maltings operation, and has since expanded into a cutting edge, high quality malting operation, blending heritage, quality, and character into a potent triumvirate.

Irish Stout Malt is characterized by plump, round kernels with very low protein and high extract. Low kilning temperatures mean a very pale wort with high enzyme levels. While usually used in Irish stouts, it is at home in any style calling for an English-type pale malt. This malt's tendency to be very pale and very high in enzymes means it is well suited to adjunct-laden worts, such as the classic dry Irish stout grist.

Great in a stout brew. Will buy again.

First Impression
Grain seems to have astringent, hay/grass like qualities based on first whiff. Tasting the grain confirms the hay like qualities. Will see how it finishes, however, my brew is not single grain, so no definite report on finished product on this grain alone.

A good component for Oatmeal-Cream Stout
I've used this in a couple stouts now and they've turned out well. The only thing I might be a bit concerned about is that I was getting stuck sparges, but I was using it with other malts and adjuncts associated with that problem, too. Will buy again.

Is this similar to a 2 Row or Maris Otter? Maybe something in between? Thanks.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it is similar to Maris Otter malt, and can be used much the same way. It's excellent for stouts, but can be used for many different styles of beer with terrific results. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
