Hop Rhizomes

Typical hop rhizome

A hop rhizome is a living segment of the root of a female hop vine and is the best way to start a new plant for growing at home. Hops are very hardy and can be successfully grown in backyards and gardens almost anywhere in the continental United States. The vines are perennial and will send up new shoots in the spring; growth is usually stronger is subsequent years after the root system has developed more fully. Under good conditions, an established vine can yield up to two pounds of hops, ensuring you a continuous supply of hop flowers for your homebrew. Includes growing instructions.

Minimum Order. Minimum order of two rhizomes.

February 5, 2008 - We are now taking pre-orders for hop rhizomes. Order early for the best chance to receive the varieties and amounts that you want.

When the rhizomes are harvested (our vendor is estimating early to mid April), your rhizomes will be shipped right to your door. These will be sent exclusively through USPS First Class, as they become available. Sorry, other shipping methods (UPS, FedEx) and expedited shipping are not available.

Rhizome orders within the contiguous USA are included in our BrewSaver shipping, $7.99 regardless of the number of rhizomes ordered.

Will be shipping all rhizomes to our customers directly from our experienced hop vendor in Oregon. This helps us to deliver healthy rhizomes, as they will be handled much less than if we re-distributed them from our Minnesota warehouse.

Ordering rhizomes. Order rhizomes online or by phone. You will be billed right away, and your rhizomes will ship via USPS First Class Mail as soon as all varieties on your order are available. Once the ground is workable and rhizomes can be harvested (usually late March/early April), your rhizomes will be shipped directly to you. In past years, some hop rhizome varieties have been available a week or two earlier than others.

We recommend ordering the varieties and amounts that you want early to ensure that your rhizomes will arrive in optimal condition for planting and growing; it also gives you a better chance to get the varieties you want.

For reference, in 2006, most rhizomes arrived by April 1st, and we sold out by the end of April. Lots of people still sell hop rhizomes as late as May, but in our experience, few rhizomes will survive out of the soil for that long.

Sorry, hop rhizomes are not available for customers outside the US, APO/FPO addresses, Hawaii, Idaho or Washington State — see "Shipping Restrictions," below.

Ordering other items with your rhizomes. You can add other products to your rhizome order in order to save on shipping costs. However, your rhizome order will be shipped separately from the other products on your order. Rhizomes will not be shipped until after March 31st.

Shipping. All rhizome orders will automatically ship by USPS First Class mail. Expedited shipping (UPS 3 Day or Air) is not available.

Shipping restrictions. Please note that hop rhizomes are living plants and cannot be shipped to the following:

  • any destination outside the United States.
  • APO/FPO addresses.
  • Hawaii.
  • Idaho. Because of a quarantine on hop importation to Bonner and Kootenai counties, the Idaho Dept. of Agriculture requires that all shipments of hop root stock to any part of Idaho must be accompanied by certification from a federal or state facility that the stock is disease-free. Since we have no way of complying with this regulation, we won't be able to ship rhizomes to Idaho until new regulations are posted.
  • Washington State.

Planting and temporary storage. Rhizomes should be planted outside after the last frost of the season. For those who live in parts of the country where a killing frost could still occur for the next several weeks, we recommend temporarily keeping your rhizomes in potting soil in a cool, humid basement, root cellar, or three-season porch. Keep the potting soil evenly moist, and transplant the rhizomes outside as soon as weather permits.

Disclaimer. Rhizome viability is not guaranteed. The vast majority of rhizomes will grow into healthy adult female hop plants. However, because we strive to offer a low price on the best root stock available and in the best possible condition, we cannot replace rhizomes that fail to grow. We recommend ordering extra, and ordering early to secure the highest quality root stock.

Minimum order is 2 rhizomes.
