1 Gallon Small Batch White House Starter Kits

* Required Fields

Two original recipes brewed by White House staff and shared with the world as Northern Brewer kits.

Honey Ale

Built on a big foundation of malt with strong tones of biscuit and toffee, White House Honey Ale plays down hop bitterness and plays up the fruity and caramelly aspect of English malt and yeast. A late addition of pure honey is the signature calling card of this recipe, imbuing a floral aroma and lightening the body. Ale to the chief!

Honey Porter

This original recipe brewed by White House staff is both a callback to the favored beverage of our Founding Fathers as well as an opportunity to come together in an election year and share pints across the aisle. More than just simply black and roasty, this porter builds consensus with generous applications of sweet caramel and toasty Munich malts, while moderate bitterness and a pound of honey lets us all find common ground. In a year of divisive politics, we think it’s especially important to remember what we have in common: homebrewing!

Good kit except for the filler Review by Dave
Been a 5-gallon brewer for years and wanted to try something smaller. This kit was just the ticket although I'd make one recommendation: get a spring-loaded bottle filler to use instead of the gravity-fed one that is packed in the kit. Also, the kit includes yeast though this isn't clear in the description. (Posted on 4/1/15)
    Great product Review by Wayne
The kit came with everything that I needed to get started brewing after a long time of debating whether or not I wanted to do this. I chose the White House Honey Ale as my starter and all I can say is that the process was very easy. The hardest part is the waiting. I bottled my first batch this afternoon. I tasted the un-carbonated beer that was left over after filling my bottles. All I can say is this is going to be a great beer once it is fully carbonated and ready to go. I'm already making plans for my next batch. (Posted on 4/29/14)
    Tastes Great Review by Jason
Probably more filling too. I just bottled my first batch of this yesterday (my first partial after doing two Mr Beer rounds that got me interested in this hobby). This kit was great, though the fermentation lock felt a little frail. I wish I had more room in my kitchen when prepping everything, but it made for a great brew day morning - house had a great smell to it that the wife didn't mind.

This beer really does taste great, I ended up 'tasting' about 1/3 of a bottle because it was that good. I definitely recommend this to people just starting to brew, its easy if you follow the instructions, just be patient.

If this conditions well in the bottle, I'm doing more of these for sure. I just hope NB will send me the kit when I order it this time, instead of waiting 4 days before finally sending it out. (Posted on 2/23/14)
User Friendly, a few hiccups Review by Charlotte
This was my gift to my boyfriend for Christmas, and we brewed together this was a little hiccup during fermenting, some overflow into the airlock, but at the end of the day we fixed that, let it sit for a month and now have a nice honey ale that is a bit darker than expected but really nice! I was impressed and glad I chose northern brewer, we all know what he is getting for valentines day (Posted on 2/13/14)
Great buy for anyone looking to start a new hobby Review by Joshua
This kit is a great buy if you are looking to see if this hobby is for you.
Not only does it come with all of the accessories you will need, it also comes with a gallon kit for your first batch.

When you buy this kit you don't just get a kit and a recipe you get experts help and amazing directions. Utilize the customer service if you have any issues. By far the best site and very reasonable prices. (Posted on 2/2/14)

    Great Start Review by Brian
First time homebrewing. Best Christmas gift ever! Overall the kit was very easy to follow. My honey porter is fermenting as we speak and it smells amazing so far. Hardest part of the process is patience! (Posted on 1/18/14)
    Great! Review by Richelle
Bought this for my hubby. He had no previous experience and this worked GREAT for him! (Posted on 1/16/14)
Good Starter Kit Review by Andy
Got this kit as a Christmas gift from my daughter. Instructions were easy to understand and kept me on task. Love the dvd and Brew TV. Just bottled yesterday so cannot comment on taste but learning the extract brewing process was a great experience. (Posted on 1/12/14)
Great way to start. Review by Bruce
I bought 2 of these kits to give as gifts at Christmas. Both of them went to the "other men" in my 2 daughters life. They always love to taste my beers so I figured it was time to return the favor. :-) The kits shipped fast and where well packed. Now I'm just waiting to taste the fruits of their labor. Cheers! Good For Sampling. Needs to include a brush. Review by Justin
The 1 gallon kit is perfect for sampling a brew before going for the 5 gallon. This way, you don't get stuck with 5 gallons of a beer that you may not care for the taste of.

I wish this kit came with a carboy brush, or I was at least STRONGLY recommend to purchase one. The foam from the Hef I brewed would be impossible to clean off without the "L" shaped brush. (Posted on 12/3/13)
A good drinkable beer Review by Marc
Brewed this as my first batch of home brew, and despite some temperature control issues it turned out well. I ended up with a very drinkable beer. (Posted on 11/3/13)
Great starter kit! Review by Jacob
This is a perfect starter kit for someone looking to get into home brewing or someone looking to expand their recipes and looking to try new things.

The instructions were easy to follow and the NB team was super helpful. Mine arrived with a broken part and the crew put a new one in the mail the next morning with no questions asked! (Posted on 11/3/13)
High quality, fair price, potential for expansion. Review by Andrew
I spent quite some time shopping around the internet looking into small batch brewing. While there are numerous options, the Northern Brewer package seemed to be both high quality and fair priced.

As someone new to homebrewing, I feel good about the manageable initial financial investment while retaining the option for continued expansion. There are many potential additions that do make life easier but you have everything essential from the get-go.

Lastly, you can't beat this sort of small batch kit when living in a tiny apartment. I keep all my brewing equipment and ingredients discreetly hidden because nothing is bigger than the 1 gallon carboy.

If you are considering 5 gallon homebrewing and just want to try it out, consider a this a small trial kit. If you are into small batch brewing, Northern Brewer is a solid relationship to develop. (Posted on 10/22/13)
    Amazing Review by Josh
This was my first brew and I was amazed. I couldn't have asked for more and I am now truly hooked on home brewing! (Posted on 10/1/13)
Good Starter Kit Review by Mutt
This was my very first kit. I had never tried to brew my own and was intimidated. This kit made it easy and was packaged well for "newbies". The batch turned out nice with good aromas and nice flavor. Definitely enjoyed it and recommend it to others as a way to explore the craft without a major investment or learning curve. Good for Sampling Brews Review by David
I bought this to try out different brews on NB 1 gallon batches then I buy the 5 gallon kit if I like it. You get normally 8 12oz beers to the 1 gallon batches. Easy to use, with easy clean up. I really like it. (Posted on 9/19/13)
Great First Step! Review by Mark
I bought this kit because I was unsure if homebrewing was for me, and it seemed like a great compromise to buying a 5 gallon kit. This kit is a great way to get your feet wet and to understand the basics of brewing your own beer. The instructions cover all the bases and you are given everything you need to make some great beer!

After a couple of extract batches, I can say that I am definitely hooked and look forward to upgrading to a 5 gallon kit! (Posted on 9/18/13)
Good beer for my first try! Review by Kyle
Definitely have learned the to-do's and not to-do's, however, we fermented this would a very good concept of temperature control (in TN during the summer, inside though) and it still turned out good. We ended up with less than the volume we'd like to have had, but nonetheless, it's a straight up good beer.

I've moved on to 5gal brews now and will probably buy this again. I can only imagine how good it'll taste while being kept at 66F through the first week of fermentation! (Posted on 9/15/13)
Easy to Brew Review by Kevin
I got the kit and everything was easy to use and understand. Instructions were clear and the equipment was the right fit. I have brewed two batches so far and can't wait to taste them. (Posted on 8/19/13)
Fun & Easy Review by Diana
I am new to home brewing and thought I would stick a toe in with the 1 gallon kit. I have now brewed four extract batches and plan on upping my game to do small batch all grain brews.

I think the 1-gallon method is excellent for trying brewing, but I also think it's great if you are not sure what to do with 5 gallons of beer and all of the attendant equipment. Further, I have way less stress worrying about 1 gallon worth of work and materials than I would 5 gallons. Overall, I think the 1 gallon kit is the way to go if you want to stay small scale and be able to experiment with lots of different varieties.

Also, in terms of the kit itself, NB has assembled a set that comes with high quality equipment and everything you need to get started with extract brewing. You will probably need another $100 worth of equipment to upgrade to all-grain, but this is a great, low-price way to get started! (Posted on 7/12/13)
