Excellent Service from NB Review by Michael

Burner worked fine the first 2 times I used it. Ran into trouble on my 3rd batch-------after 90 minutes I could only reach 125 F with a closed lid on 5 gallons of water. I checked for leaks by spraying StarSan on the hose and found none. Called NB and explained my problem. They shipped out a new burner that day and I had it 6 days later. Just tested it and the flame looks strong. The 5 stars arefor customer service. Well done, NB! (Posted on 9/26/14)

Powerful burner that sips propane Review by Chris H.

This burner is awesome. It brings my 10 gallon tall boy kettle to a boil in no time at all.

Recently, I did two separate 5 gallon all-grain brew-in-a-bag batches, each with a full mash and 60 minute boil. I was shocked to find that we only burned 5lbs of propane total! That's just 2.5 lbs per batch including mash and boil.

    That's incredible to me.

    Definitely worth the money.

My only complaint is that it doesn't seem like the most stable burner for super-large kettles. It handles my 10 gallon kettle just fine, but a 15 to 20 gallon kettle might make me worry a bit. (Posted on 8/11/14)
    Propane sipper Review by Ed

This is my first outdoor burner. I have always done "kitchen batches" before so I was very excited to try this thing out yesterday. I must not have had the heat cranked on it all the way 'cause it took me about 20 minutes to get the 6 gallons of water to steeping temp, let alone boiling. However, I found the burner very easy to use, which I like, and my only "complaint" is I wish the regulators had numbers on it so you could remember at which number you got what level of flame kicking out. I was pleased to learn that my 1.5 or so hour use only used 2.5 pounds of propane. I weighed the full tank before use (33.5 pounds) and after it was 31 pounds. Some complained that it can be loud and when I did crank the heat just to experiment, it did get a little noisy, but it was certainly not a big deal. I think I'll really enjoy using the Darkstar Burner for years. I just wish its flame would not have scorched the bottom of my new Tall Boy kettle. Not sure if that's due to the burner or kettle, but both worked well together. (Posted on 7/17/14)

I got this for free with a NB promotion and I am glad I did. I have a Mega Pot and it is hard to fit it on the stove and my wife complains that I make the house stink. Today I set up the mega pot on the burner and was very happy when I saw how fast I got up to temperature and now the house did not smell, This little tool saves time and a wife complaint not to shabby for a freebie or the $50 asking price (that I would now gladly pay after using this). Quality seems reasonable I expect the item to last several years. Like others say you will leave a lot of carbon on the bottom of your kettle so do not put it on the kitchen counter like I did in front of the MRS she will make sure to point out what you did then complain about how you cleaned it - trust me. My first burner had a defective leaky regulator hose, which was a little discomforting - definitely check for leaks with a little soap or star san! Props to NB though, who immediately sent out an entirely new replacement burner at no cost.
Overall, this is a great budget burner that throws a lot of heat. Granted, it is noisy when cranked high, sooty yellow flame on low, the paint may mar your kettle, the air intake valve is useless, and the windscreen is not that functional. However for the price it is hard to beat. (Posted on 3/17/14)

I received this burner free as a promotion when I bought my Deluxe Starter Kit. I have use it for three brews now and it works fantastic. Set-up was a piece of cake. Hooked up the tank, no problems. Didn't have a ton of wind so can't comment on that. Boiled quickly. The adjustment for the air/fuel mixture is pretty rudimentary, but didn't seem to matter very much. My wife is happy the house doesn't smell anymore! (Posted on 2/9/14)

I received the Dark Star burner as a promotional gift with my Deluxe Starter kit. The burner is a very simple design so there isn't much that can break or go wrong. There is an air vent control that really doesn't do much of anything. However, I was able to control the flame just fine with the control valve on the propane line.

I am a brand new home brewer and this burner is perfect for my needs (brewing 5 gallon batches, and keeping out of my wife's kitchen!). It also seems like it will grow along with my brewing activities for quite some time. I would highly recommend this burner because of it's simplicity and cost effectiveness. (Posted on 2/5/14)

I've been a little hesitant to order a new burner but, after reviewing other reviews, decided I would give the Dark Star Burner a chance.
    It exceeded my expectations!!
Assembly was extremely easy. Instructions were simple and I was up and running in 10 minutes after unpacking the unit.
Even during our recent "Polar-Vortex" (-8 degrees F) in Upstate New York, this burner performed exceptional.
There was very little paint burn-off as other reviewers have experienced.
My suggestion would be to use high-temp paint every year and I believe it will last for a very long time.

I've had the Dark Star Burner for 4 months now. I have a couple of complaints with this burner. One: The air/fuel mixture control is poor for low flame use. Two: The burner produces alot of soot on low flame. Granted this isn't a real big deal, but it adds to the clean up time.

I have used this burner on a few batches now.

Pros: Great heat output and controllable flame. The regulator works well. You can close it down for a very small flame or let it rip, and anything in between. Simple sturdy design is more than adequate for full 5 gallon boils. !0 gallons should be fine as well. It's lightweight, too. Paint seems to be of good quality.

Cons: Airflow plate design renders it useless. Not a huge deal, but not much in the way on control there, which may account for the slightly "dirty" flame. Larger flames may result in a little "charring" of kettles, but minor and easily cleaned. The paint WILL burn off on the supports near the burner. I suggest a quick 15-20 burn at high flame to get that nastiness out of the way before brewing.

For $50 this is a great burner. Time will tell about durability, but my initial impression is that if I keep it clean, this burner will last for years.

Having had enough of cleaning propane soot off my turkey burner fired brew pot, I bought one of these. The performance is far and away better with nice blue flames from low heat to "afterburner". Boiled water then wort in no time, actually catching me by surprise as I wasn't ready for the fast response. Very stable platform, but had no wind to rate its response in that environment. The first one I ordered was defective, but Northern Brewer promptly sent out a new one, for free, that worked perfectly. Which makes me like doing business with them even more.

Pro: Works as advertised, easily fit my 8 gallon pot and heated my wort quickly. The flame height has a lot of adjustment and wind was reasonably blocked.

Con: Has a "hand-made" feel. The flame adjustment knob spins exactly the opposite of what you would expect. After one brew some of the black paint is peeling off.

Conclusion: Good enough for it's intended purpose, Cheap enough that the drawbacks can be ignored. Oh, and buy from Northern Brewer, they support their customers! (Posted on 11/4/13)

Pros: I like this burner a lot. It is very stable and does heat the water quickly. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. If it had a longer leg stand, I would buy another one in a heartbeat.
It is well built. Still going after 20 batches.

cons: I find it harder to light than my old "turkey fryer" burner due to the fact that there is only one lighting hole. I also find it near impossible to see the burner flame when adjusting. One thing is that it left 3 paint stains on the kettle bottom from the paint on the burner.

Neutral: I wonder why this has a 5 psi regulator on it and the old "turkey fryer" had a 10 psi on it? The burner size looks identical. None the less, it heats water fast. Possibly too fast for that rolling boil.

Wanted a burner so I could get off my stove which would take forever to get a full brew boiling. This bad boy got that pot from tap to boiling in about 20-25 minutes. Nice and sturdy. For the price I couldn't be more happier.

Only negatives I would say would be the paint burns easily leaving black soot everywhere your first couple brews. Invest in some type of wind protection. Even a slight breeze has the flame flicking madly. A little tin foil around the base went a long way. (Posted on 10/2/13)

I used The Dark Star Burner yesterday while brewing my latest batch of beer. I am really amazed at how quickly the burner can facilitate the boiling process. Prior to purchasing the burner, I used a turkey fryer stand and burner. The turkey fryer equipment is great for turkey, but this is definitely the burner that is needed to produce beer at home! My son encouraged me to buy it; thank you, Travis. (Posted on 10/1/13)

Just used this for my first partial mash and was very happy with the results. My kettle boiled quickly and after that it needed only a very low setting to keep a good rolling boil. On low heat it will leave a soot buildup on the bottom of the brew pot and the flame seemed a little unstable, but it did the job well. A good burner for the price that I hope to use for a long time. My first foray into the world of propane burners, and I will never go back to stove top! The Dark Star is great value: giving off plenty of BTU's for a 5 gallon boil without busting the wallet. My first use burned some paint off of the inner, sheet metal ring, but not sure why there would be paint that close to the flame anyway. (Posted on 9/19/13)

This is a very good burner for the price. I have used it once and found it works as described. Using the burner to heat a five gallon batch saved about 20 to 30 minutes compared to using an electric range. My only complaint is the amount of soot that was left on the bottom of the pot. Hopefully this can be reduced by adjusting the fuel/air ratio. (Posted on 9/15/13)

It boiled 4 gallons in 18 minutes and 2.5 gallons in 11 minutes, both cold from the tap (city water) with no cover. It's a good value. As a first time brewer I am very happy and glad that I was informed about using a propane burner on brew day; it saved me a lot of time and chatter from the wife and kids (Daddy, it's smells). On full blast 54,000 BTU sounds so awesome, like a small jet engine. (Posted on 9/9/13)

I recently tried out this burner on my deck during a nice summer evening. Although this is not the Blichman Rolls Royce, but rather the VW of burners, the difference in price allowed me to invest in some nice all grain recipes I always wanted to try....like the all Citra Hops ale that I brewed with my new burner. Overall, the Dark Star did a great job and in no-time heated up the 7 gal of water I needed to extract the 13 lbs of grain in my 10 gal stainless steel pot. Recommended!! (Posted on 9/5/13)

This thing heats FAST. I make 5.5 gallon batches, starting at around 7-8 gallons. My old turkey cooker was so slow, sometimes it wouldn't even get it up to boiling. I'm using this right now, it got my wort to boiling while I was cleaning some of my equipment. Usually I'm sitting around waiting a good hour before it gets close to boiling. This is probably the best investment since starting all grain brewing. The price is about as much as what I paid for the crummy zero structural strength turkey cooker. (Posted on 8/25/13)

Got the Dark Star burner and couldn’t wait to do a full boil with my 10 gallon brew pot. I am using this burner to replace my previous burner: a turkey cooker (which would only accept a smaller diameter pot) that had an annoying 20 minute timer on it that I had to reset before it turned itself off.
With the Dark Star burner I can do other prep work while to boil is going on and shorten my brew day by at least 30 minutes.

I'm new to brewing yet I know that using a burner to achieve a better hot-break is a very good thing. Saw an ad for the Dark Star, read some reviews. Bought one. It was shipped quickly, arrived in perfect condition. Was easy to put the gas fitting to the venturi. It brought 5 gallons to 165 degrees (steeping) in a few minutes. To boiling then after steeping surprisingly quickly. Did a 60 min boil and used less than two lbs of propane. NICE!!!! This batch will rock... The soot on the bottom of the pot can be delt with by managing the air intake for a blue flame, btw. Long story short: This burner for this price (under 40 bucks) is a no-brainer. (Posted on 8/9/13)

i was using a sp-10 bayou burner for a while there, but the burner outlets began getting clogged with soot and rust everytime i brewed resulting in a very uneven flame that was all yellow and sooty. i made this purchase on a limb and was nervous, but for forty bucks it was worth a shot. and was to my suprise, much better than i thought. it got a 6.5 gallon wort to a roaring boil in about 21 minutes, opposed to over an hour with the bayou burner! the wind screen does a superb job as well. the only adjustment i had to make on the regulator was DOWN. no issue keeping a consistent boil.

this was by far the best 40 dollars ive spent on brewing yet!. i have no doubt this burner could handle a full boil for a ten gallon batch. i weigh almost 200 pounds and the stand can hold my weight with ease. so a 12 gallon brew kettle will be no issue.

if your on a budget and need a burner, this is the one!! (Posted on 7/19/13)

Ordered it on Monday(7/1/13) got it today(7/3/13) As soon as I got it, put it together, which consisted of screwing in the hose(made sure I didn't over tighten it) Proceded to the patio to test it out, filled my pot with about 6-7 gallons of water & fired it up!!! Needless to say that I was amazed with how quick it took to get the water to boil(30-40 minutes) Test run went PERFECT!!! Looks like I'll be trying my first all-grain batch on the 4th of July!!!!! The paint stinks when it burns off, which is to be expected. The only reason I took off a star is because the base isn't level. It is safe, but wobbles a bit. I put shims under both sides to steady it. (Posted on 6/16/13)

Fortunately I ordered before these were out of stock... I brewed a 5 gallon batch (of Kiwi Express) this Saturday. It was pretty cold... 42 with 25mph winds here in New England.

Was very easy to setup... just screw in the regulator hose and tighten with a wrench (don't over tighten it).

I boiled 3.5gal of water in about 15 min with the burner at about 80%. Kept it a little lower at first to give more time for specialty grains to steep.

When starting the boil, the wind was gusting pretty hard but the burner had no problem at all thanks to a good wind shield.

Because the wind wasn't consistent, I had to adjust to avoid boil over. The regulator made it very easy for me to keep my boil where I wanted it... from "o to 100%" takes about 4-5 full turns of the knob which gives a lot of control.

I didn't weigh my tank before/after but it didn't seem like I'd lost too much, maybe a couple of lbs?

All in all, for the price, this is an excellent burner. It took me out of the kitchen (my wife was happy about that) and cut out about 1hr compared to brewing on the stove.

For 5 gallon batches, this is perfect. So glad I was able to get one! (Posted on 4/8/13)

I just bought this burner and used it to boil in my 10 gallon kettle. I was surprised by how quiet it is compared to other burners I have used. Just like it says, it is a gas sipper. I have and will continue to tell people about this burner. (Posted on 3/31/13)

I just used this burner last night with a 5 gallon kettle hooked up to a 20lb LP tank and it worked great! Very gas efficient and it cranks out a lot of heat. LP tank lost very little weight after about an hour and a half of use. For $39.99 this is an excellent deal! (Posted on 3/28/13)
