Details

Dark without being roasty or bitter, full-bodied and malty without being syrupy ... Dunkel is another signature lager from Bavaria. The copper color and profound complexity comes from high-kilned Munich malt, with its toasty, bready aroma and full flavor. Our kit is rounded out with German hops and an authentic yeast strain to yield a smooth and satisfying dark lager. Serve alongside rye bread, cheese and mustard. Recommended: 2-stage cold fermentation and yeast starter.

Clean and flavorful! Review by Zach
Rating
In brief, this is fantastic beer that drinks clean and is loaded with flavor.

I went with a triple decoction on brew day for a more traditional mash, OG slightly higher as a result at 1.055. Primary temperature-controlled fermentation for 3 weeks (FG 1.014), lagered for 4 then added biofine and lagered 1 more week before kegging and carbing.

Beautiful copper/amber-brown color and tan head. Aroma is full of bread with a hint of caramel. The flavor is subtle hints of toast and mild sweetness not unlike toffee or caramel. A touch sweeter than expected but a just enough bitterness such that it is not cloying. Possibly due to the triple decoction mash and higher final gravity. I don't think I would do anything different next time because I can't seem to put this one down. (Posted on 3/18/14)
First Lager, great beer! Review by Travis

This was my first attempt at making a lager, and I didn't let it ferment long enough in primary, so I didn't achieve the FG that I was expecting, I fermented in secondary for approx 6 weeks, and kegged it up. Awesome beer for anytime drinking. I enjoyed it in October! I used the Wyeast liquid for mine. (Posted on 1/6/14)
big time brew! Review by William

This beer is big time! I haven't bottled it up yet but I got a starting gravity of 1.060 with a single infusion mash. For anyone wanting to do all grain for the first time I would suggest this one. It's easy and there's only one hop addition. I've already got another Bavarian Dunkel kit ordered and can't wait to get started on it again. (Posted on 12/9/13)

This was the best beer that I've made and drank. I used the recommended yeast and did secondary fermentation for four weeks at ~40 degrees. I went really fast!! I will make this again next winter and am going to make it as an ale. (Posted on 4/9/12)
Excellent Kit Review by Fliben

Brewed this and did the 2 stage fermentation. I sitll cannot believe how good this turned out smooth taste without and after bite.

I also have notice that it is getting better with a little age. I kegged the beer and will always keep this as one of my four taps of beer! (Posted on 8/22/11)
Awesome brew Review by Modibo

This is an excellent dunkel, and the all-grain recipe may be the best kit beer I have ever brewed from NB - and I've done probably 15 - 20 between extract and all grain. I brewed it with the White Labs SF Lager yeast, though, so I can't say how it is when using the recommended yeast.

Very smooth and easy to drink, but it has a lot of character. It's one of those beers that you find yourself sipping and suddenly you find yourself stopping because it's got a lot of subtle complexities. I will definitely brew this again! (Posted on 8/10/11)
