Details

This famous German style is stronger than an everyday lager and is the fuel for Oktoberfest celebrations all over the world. The original pre-industrial Oktoberfest was called Märzenbier, brewed at the end of the brewing season in the spring to be lagered in caves all summer for fall and harvest festivities. Our kit will give you a full-bodied and elegant red-amber beer with a subdued German noble hop bitterness and complex malty profile that's great all year round. Recommended: 2-stage cold fermentation and yeast starter.

This was my first AG and first lager. Everything that could go wrong did. After 3 months at 35 I kegged it. The result is the best beer I`ve ever made out of about 30 batches. Smooth, malty and a head that never leaves. Every year at this time I buy 2 cases of Sams Octoberfest. Not any more! Thanks NB (Posted on 8/15/14)

Great beer! It reminded me a lot of Hoffbrau. I did a single infusion mash on this one and got a 1.050 sg. I'm very pleased with the results and would recommend it to anyone. O' zapft ist! (Posted on 12/9/13)

Been lagering for two weeks. Samples are rich malt with slight hop background. Wait a couple more weeks before carbonating. Great Thankgiving beer. (Posted on 11/2/13)

I brewed this in the spring and kept it in secondary for months before kegging. Lager is very crisp and carries a nice kick also. I drink it each Sunday for the NFL games and it's as good as buying an Oktoberfest at the bar. (Posted on 10/30/13)

very clean yet has a lot to it. rich and delicious. couldn't stop drinking it... I just did a simple single sacch and it was slightly below the intended OG. didn't need to add more yeast which I was surprised. not usually a fan of lagers, but this one turned out great. making a batch for Oktoberfest! This was the second lager I brewed, and probably my favorite lager style, and I was very pleased how it turned out. Made a big starter and had a diacetyl rest, and the flavor was spot on. Clean, crisp, and malty. Didn't last long and will definitely brew again! (Posted on 7/12/13)
Was true to the style Review by Wayne

A nice crisp beer. Looks fantastic in the glass, a pleasant aroma, and a malty flavor with perfect hop compliment. This beer finishes well. Malty lagers are great all year round. (Posted on 12/18/12)
So-So Review by peddy

This an average beer, at best. I was expecting more from it. It's clean, crisp, sweet, and very malty. But it falls sort for me in that there's nothing really interesting about it. Could just be my personal preference but I did find it a bit...boring. This was my first Lager. I had great temperature control but I did not perform a diacetyl rest. Wonder if the flavor would have been any different if I did. (Posted on 10/13/12)

I ordered this in the summer and had it shipped to me in San Antonio, TX. The yeast didn't make it in the heat and was dead upon arrival (Wyeast). NB took care of me by giving me an account credit and I went to my local store for a replacement. Otherwise this recipe went as planned. No problems with gravity, etc. I am not generally a big fan of Marzen/Oktoberfest beers but did this just for some variety. The result was great. It was very true to the style in color and flavor. If you want something with a nice mild and malty taste, this is a good one to try. (Posted on 10/13/12)

I used decoction mashing on this one. Took a bit longer to convert and pass the iodide test. Quite pleased with the results, despite tapping it a bit early. Strong malt backbone on this one. Pleasant golden amber color and was well received by those tasting it. (Posted on 5/30/12)

Thanks to this Oktoberfest AG recipe, we had a great Halloween party! Lagered in the keezer just long enough to serve. Rich color and malt flavor. Very smooth and pleasing for the masses. Two thumbs up! (Posted on 5/22/12)

awesome Oktoberfest. had friends over for an oktoberfest dinner and beer tasting and this was the overwhelming favorite - was one of 5 oktoberfests (and mostly commercial brews) at the tasting (Posted on 10/28/11)
Will make again! Review by Benjamin

What an awesome beer! Brewed a little late (24 May), and kegged a little early(mid july) due to a deployment to the middle east, but wow, this beer still was delicious. Be sure to pitch a big starter, I ended up making a starter from 2 2633 packs. When I brew this again, I'll be adding .5 oz noble type hops AFTER the 30 min mark to more suit my tastes, and the IBU's came out a little low for the style, at around 13.3 with the style range being 20-28. Either way, awesome beer, I would highly suggest making it for an Oktoberfest party.....the keg will not last! (Posted on 9/1/11)

Brewed in March and lagered until August. Just kegged and had a few friends over. My brew buddy said it is possibly the best lager I've brewed in a while. I have to agree. It's very clean and malty. Highly recommended! Thanks Northern Brewer! (Posted on 8/16/10)
