Shining Star Pale Ale Extract Kit w/ Specialty Grains

SKU: U0750

Palisade hops lend a smooth bitterness while Centennial and Columbus provide brisk citrus, pine, and grassy flavors. A measured contribution of crystal sweetness from Bairds Light Carastan rounds out the flavor and makes for a sessionable ale, perfect for watching the latest match or unwinding after a game. Bright and intrepid, great hops on a grassy backdrop, and superb interplay between all the elements. Wait, are we talking about the beer or the Stars Soccer team? The two converge in this tribute beer to The MN Stars FC, the 2011 North American Soccer League Champions. To support their worthy efforts we've developed a hop-forward pale ale of the American school. Palisade hops lend a smooth bitterness while Centennial and Columbus provide brisk citrus, pine, and grassy flavors. Great summer brew Review by Kevin
Rating
I can't wait to fire up more of this for the summer (if summer ever arrives). I made this two or three different times last year following its release. It's a great quick beer (less than 2 weeks from brew to keg) and appeals to a wide audience. I will definitely keep one keg of this on tap at all times this summer! (Posted on 4/21/13)

Amazing beer Review by Medic53

I was getting discouraged with homebrew attempts. My first batch was great. The next 5 were far from great. I was about to give up when I decided to try this kit. It was my first from Northern Brewer.
I am glad I didn't give up. This kit was easy to do and turned out great. Followed the directions exactly as written. Cracked the first bottle at only 1 week and was as giddy as a schoolgirl with it. Amazing hop flavor already. Waited another week and was just as happy with the beer. All my friends fell in love with it too. Will be brewing this beer again soon. I have brewed two more beers from Northern Brewer and they have all been great. I will not buy my kits from anyone else from now on! (Posted on 4/1/13)
Best Batch I've Brewed Review by Ryan

Probably don't need to say much more about this one, but amazing beer! Especially for the price and time involved you get a great pale ale in 4 weeks. I am a huge Pale Ale and IPA drinker and not only me but all my hop head pals really enjoyed this brew. Definitely pick this one up. (Posted on 3/4/13)
Crisp, refreshing, easy to brew Review by Stephen

I've brewed this twice now. Two weeks in the primary, a week or two in the bottles. It's quick, it's easy, and it's really tasty. This is a very crisp, hoppy (but not too bold) pale ale that any pale ale fan would enjoy. Highly recommended. (Posted on 11/22/12)
Great Beer Review by MicK

Just got into homebrewing about 4 months ago and this was my second batch. The gist - for someone short on experience, but knowledgeable (enough) about sanitation/fermentation, this kit produces one great pale ale! 2 weeks primary, 2 weeks in the bottle and now have myself a highly drinkable pale that friends and family alike have raved about (... couldn't agree more)! Highly recommended Review by Bob

This beer has average alcohol content, lots of citrus hop flavor and a delicious, almost "bready" maltiness. Reminiscent of Brooklyn Summer Ale. An added benefit is that I was able to go from brew kettle to drinking in 3 weeks (1 week primary, 2 weeks in bottles). Highly recommended and not just for summer (Posted on 10/19/12)
Great base PA to tweak. Review by hightechlofi

Just brewed this for a family get together on a very condensed timeframe: primary for 9 days, cold crash for 4, the to the keg for force carbing. Sipping on it now after just two weeks from brew day and it is really good. A previous reviewer stated it is light, and I second this. The hop flavor comes through really nicely, but the malt backing seems a little watery for my taste. Gonn add maybe another pound of extract or some more crystal next time to give it just a little bump. Doesn't need to much though, this is a really good beer; especially for the impatient :) (Posted on 10/5/12)
Awesome american Pale ale Review by Andrew

I have only been homebrewing for less than a year and just starting to find my preferred tastes. Recently i have been leaning more towards more hop flavor and less malt. I had been looking at this kit for a while and figured it was worth a try. I am almost finished drinking my second batch and will be making more for sure.

I have a friend who is about to brew the AG version so i am keen to try that one. He has said this was probably my best brew yet.
It is an easy kit to brew and the result both times have been great. Personally i prefer the 1056 yeast option, and I did a split addition of the extract.
If you like American pale ales try this one, i doubt you will be disappointed. (Posted on 9/22/12)
Terrific, As Is, then modifiy for an even better summer refresher Review by VRWESQ

I purchased this kit as quick pale ale for the summer. Plus, the proceeds support a worthy cause. This is a terrific base line pale ale, as is. However, I made some modifications to it that sent this over the top, in my opinion. Anyone on the East Coast is familiar with a certain almost pale ale from the Green Mountains associated with the #9. Well, after having one of these and then having one of those, I found that this kit made a perfect base for cloning that other addictive taste sensation on a hot summer day. My modifications were simple: Add 1 lb. Pale DME to boost gravity and then at bottling, add 2 oz. of Northern Brewer Apricot Extract. You will not be disappointed with the refreshing results on a hot summer day. (Posted on 9/9/12)
Great First Brew Review by Andrew

Great beer with fast turn around. First beer I brewed with my kit and was very easy to follow. You can easily pick out the hop flavor and has a nice creaminess mouth feel to it. It is a must try. Plus some of the money goes to a good cause. (Posted on 8/2/12)
Very Good but Very Light Review by Mike
Rating
The recipe calls for a pound of grain but I only received a half pound. I didn't call to see if they'd changed the recipe or if it was a mix up. No matter, it still turned out VERY refreshing but very light for a pale ale, to me more like a slightly hoppier version of a Kolsch. We drank it last night with some slices of lime in it to go with Mexican food and I'll definitely do that again! I held back a star just because there are other recipes from Northern Brewer I like better.

This was amazing....I say was because it is gone now. Not to worry, I have another kit on the way. I couldn't stop drinking it. It has been 103+ degrees in Kansas for 3 weeks and this beer is a thirst quencher.....all this while only in the bottle for 8 days! (Posted on 7/6/12)

Good Pale Review by Otis & Eddie's Brewery - Potsdam NY (this is my house, don't come here please)

This is a simple Pale Ale,... better than most bottled pales. I added an extra 1/2 Lb of Light DME to offset the primary fermentation volume of 5.5 gallons.

tweaked hop schedule to the following:

1/2 oz Palisade Pellets (alpha 5.6 ) - 60 min
1/2 oz Palisade Pellets (alpha 5.6 ) - 30 min
1/2 oz Columbus Pellet (alpha 13.9 - 5 min
1/2 oz Centennial Pellet (alpha 8.1) - 5 min
1/2 oz Columbus Pellet (alpha 13.9) - 0 min - into primary steeped with hot wort/cold h2o (50/50 mix)
1/2 oz Centennial Pellet (alpha 8.1) - 0 min into primary steeped with hot wort/cold h2o (Posted on 4/29/12)

I brewed this one about two weeks ago. Took a sample today when transferring from primary to secondary. Very pleased whithhop note. Gonna let it clear for a few days and keg it. Just ordered four more kits. I'm gonna keep this one around all summer! (Posted on 4/20/12)
