Ale to the Chief! This original recipe, first customized and brewed by the White House kitchen staff, is now available by popular demand as a Northern Brewer kit. Built on a big foundation of malt with strong tones of biscuit and toffee, the Honey Ale plays up the fruity, caramel aspects of English malt and yeast. But much like the Founding Fathers would have spiced up traditional style ales with homegrown ingredients, a late addition of pure honey adds a revolutionary twist. Declare your independence from mediocre beers with this historic White House Homebrew!

- Updated from 4/10 to a Great 5 Star Beer Review by David

I decided to let the beer sit for 10 more days in the keg and man what a difference it made. This is one smooth sweet tasting beer. The Hoppy Flavor that was so pronounced 10 days ago has almost gone away to where there is just enough "Hops" to know its there. Once again I only used half the hops during brewing. This was my first kit from Northern Brewer. The more I drink this the more I like it. Followed the instructions to a T with the exception of late extract addition to keep the color on the lighter side. Even doing that it turned out darker then I anticipated. But that said, it's one of my fav beers that I've made so far (only made 4 so far) Just wish the weather would warm up so I could enjoy it on my patio ... Cheers!! Tasted this beer tonight for the first time out of a keg and it tasted great with lots of flavor, just did not like that hops after taste that came along with it. I'm a beginner brewer and this is my second batch, I really don't like the taste of "Hoppy" beer so I only used half the hops during brewing, wish I would have used .25% instead.Rating
Wondering if in 3 weeks the 12 bottles I did will taste any different than the beer I kegged? (Posted on 4/10/13) - Much Darker Than Expected Review by David
-
For a beer with "Honey" in the name, I expected a lighter beer. Much darker than I thought it would be, as well as heavier. That being said, it is good. Took nearly 4 weeks in the bottle to get some carbonation going, and even now at 6 weeks, there isn't too much, but that could just be the beer. Overall, we're enjoying it. I didn't measure OG or SG, but after 3 of them, I could tell there was some alcohol in it! :-D (Posted on 4/8/13)Rating - Authoritative, yet mild mannered Review by Tom

I've been brewing all-grain for the past 4 years or so, but a friend wanted to try his hand at brewing and I thought that it was time to revisit extract brewing for the occasion. We brewed up this batch to 5.5 gal (2 weeks primary, 1.5 weeks in secondary) and got 6.25%. I also dry hopped (secondary) with the remaining hops left over, and am glad that I've done so. I kegged it last night and have to say that I'm quite looking forward to drinking this one. The green beer is highly drinkable, the finished product should be even better. The dry hops provide a nice complex finish. (Posted on 3/26/13)Rating - Decent Brew, Lacking Complexity Review by Warren

On a 10 pt scale, I'd go with a 7. Don't get me wrong - its good, and very drinkable.... just somewhat average. The recipe was easy to follow and hard to mess up. Mine ended up above 6% alcohol, but despite being in a secondary for 8 weeks, and bottle conditioned for another 7-10 weeks, it still had an overly sweet flavor. The hops palette is rather mellow, as well. If I brew this again (which I will - got this kit again for X-mas as a gift), I'll a certainly add a bit more near the end of the boil.Rating
Ultimately you get a beer that is good at several things, but not really great at anything (except that it would make a great beginner's brew) (Posted on 3/11/13) - Excellent brew! Review by Rob

Primary 2 weeks, secondary 2 weeks, forced carbonated in the keg and it's fantastic! Beautiful foamy white head, great flavor, reminds me of a Boddington's with a little honey extra. Can't get enough of it. Will definitely brew it again. (Posted on 3/7/13)Rating - good stuff Review by Henry

Smooth........good beer I will make this again. Probably should try the porter, perhaps I will do both kits next time ordering. This is damned good beer! (Posted on 1/30/13)Rating - Meh............ Review by Brent

Brewed this beer around three months ago. It is really cool that NB offers this kit, I am sure it sells well. I don't regret brewing this recipe, it was fun. Makes a pretty good beer, just not excellent in my opinion. Not trying to come off negative, but I wouldn't brew it again. However, the novelty makes it worth getting. Again, it is a pretty good beer, just didn't blow my mind. 4 stars, worth trying......... (Posted on 1/15/13)Rating - a really nice kit Review by jason

as soon as this kit came out, i wanted to brew it and have it ready for election day. mission accomplished. and to the beer..... nice and malty up front with a nice balanced hop bite and notes of honey. when i brewed this, i swapped out the honey enclosed in the kit with some locally sourced wildflower honey and got a bit heavy handed with it and ended up with a 7.5% beer. even at that, the alcohol is very well hidden. a very nice beer with a story that is a piece of history. you should try it. i,m looking forward to brewing the honey brown next. Very good beer and I was surprised to find that it's high-gravity (~7%). To me, it tastes similar to Raison d'Etre, but not as heavy. I think it's more "accessible" and "drinkable" for people than Raison d'Etre, which is one of my favorite beers. (Posted on 1/3/13)Rating - One of the best extract kits! Review by Mark

I have been brewing extract kits for a few years now, and this one is one of the best. My girlfriend was begging me to make another batch of it. (Posted on 12/10/12)Rating - Believe the hype! Review by Daniel

This beer really is as good (or better) as all the hype. Yes, it's a "White House" brew, so that in and of itself is intriguing, but I must say, everyone I've shared this with (mostly the wife and I, but several friends too) have been very, very impressed. The flavors jump out at you, but it's the perfect amount--not too much, certainly not too little. In fact I'm ordering the kit again as it was that good. It's fun to brew something you know the President and his staff are drinking, no matter what your political views! This brew is fantastic! (Posted on 11/15/12)Rating - nice Review by Tim

I brewed this about a month and a half ago. Kegged it like I do most of my brew. It was pretty tasty the day that I kegged it, but sipping on a glass tonight, it seems to be even better. The honey definitely plays a big part in its overall flavor. Seems to add texture, and maybe a little honey sweetness. It's not as dry as I thought it would be, and is chock full of flavor, including toffee, biscuit, honey, and fruity notes. Congrats, Obama, on winning another 4 years, and for this very tasty honey ale. (Posted on 11/11/12)Rating - Great beer Review by Tomas

Beer turned out great. I tasted after 6 weeks (2 weeks each for primary, secondary and bottles). I chilled for 24 hours. The carbonation was spot on. A strong beer with lots of flavors. (Posted on 11/5/12)Rating - Super flavor Review by Brian

This beer was very good the flavor was excellent. The beer tasted like most brown ales with it own distinct flavors. The honey and fuggle hops really add to this beer. Very smooth beer that has a nice 6.83% abv. Drank with my buddies and they didn't stop filling their glasses until the keg was empty. I used the liquid wyeast starter in which the wort started fermenting really quick and strong. I will order this kit again. (Posted on 10/26/12)Rating - Excellent Review by Axel Foley

This is definitely a good'un! Very distinct flavors that really doesn't remind me of anything else I have ever had. Super tasty and leaves you wanting another cool glass. The description says biscuit and toffee, maybe that's what I'm tasting, but when I asked a friend their take on the flavor they just said "it's fu***** delicious!" I went with the dry yeast; quick rehydrate and in they went. Fermentation started fast and finished in about 3-5 days. Due to my keg rotation it went into a secondary for a few weeks and ended up with a nice clear beer. Prost! (Posted on 10/25/12)Rating
