Details

Its well-balanced multi-grain backbone offers approachability, yet this radically malt and hop forward transformation of the classic red ale is fully deserving of a double-take. Home-grown Cascade reminiscent of California grapefruit groves impart a citrus twist for a sessionable brew-next-door that’s engagingly drinkable yet, without boasting, knows how to leave an impression.

Good red ale with great hops Review by Jonathan
Rating
This brew ends up a little past my bitter tolerance but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It just wasn't perfect. The hops add some great complexity to an otherwise "good" red ale. I imagine NB's basic red ale kit has better red base to it than this one does - it might be interesting to make that one with american yeast and lots of hops. Still, we had no issues drinking these quick. (Posted on 12/15/14)
Good Stuff Review by mpj

Brewed a batch of this way back in April and put it on tap after two weeks in primary. Also decided to use a slow carbonation rather than force carbonate so didn't bother tasting until another five days had gone by. First taste was a little "green" so let it sit for another ten days and was blown away by the improvement. Flavorful, perfect amount of hops and a clean aftertaste. My second batch will be brewed this weekend and can't wait to taste it again!! (Posted on 10/31/14)
malts on the nose, subtle hop finish Review by Rob

This was my first homebrew and it turned out better than I expected. While not exactly clear, it wasn't cloudy either -- but that red color is fantastic. The flavor has some nice malts on the nose and a subtle hop finish. (And are those some mild caramel notes?) It wasn't as carbonated as expected, but the flavor is what matters and the flavor is great.

Yet another home run from Norther Brewer Review by Kyle

Brew summary: I used dry yeast, hydrated with water prior to pitching (not a starter). Primary fermentation for about a week. I also used a secondary fermentation even thought it was not suggested in the directions, also for another week. Bottled and ready 2 weeks later.

This beer is fantastic. It's light but full of flavor and just the right amount of hops. It's got a very clean taste. I've brewed 8 different kits so far this year and this would be nearly at the top, just behind SMASH. I'm glad I took a shot on a kit that wasn't reviewed. I'll definitely order this one again. Just got back into homebrewing and this is my 3rd batch back. Bottled 10 days ago and opened my first bottle. Decent carbonation and it is tasty! Nice hop finish and can taste the rye. Looking forward to seeing how this bottle conditions. (Posted on 5/23/14)
