Hello there, I am interested in getting into BIAB. Just want to know what material is the bag made from. I have concerns about heating a plastic, given the toxic materials that can be released from it. is it safe to used in the hot pot? Thanks

Best Answer: Hi, I just started BIAB myself. The product page doesn't specify but generally these mesh bags are nylon - someone at NB might know about this one. If you keep it at steeping temperatures you'll be fine; they won't leach or break down at those temps. In theory even temps much higher than boiling won't matter - but that said, be careful about the bag while the heat is on the pot - the bag will touch the bottom of the pot which can be much hotter than the wort. Stir the mixture while heating - that'll prevent hot spots during mashout (and keep the grain from scorching too)

I get your concern though - I boiled mine in hot water (just to wash off anything like processing residues or whatever) to avoid any off-flavors the first time I used it. Happy brewing!
