Brix/Specific Gravity Refractometer w/ATC

SKU: 7462

A Brix Refractometer that includes a specific gravity scale. You won't have to do conversions between Brix and gravity when measuring musts or wort. Measuring final gravity accurately will still take some calculations.

Check out our Refractometer Calculator, which will allow you to convert Brix to gravity before and during fermentation.

A refractometer instantly reads gravity, in Brix, of unfermented wort or fruit juice by measuring the degree that light passing through the sample is bent. Unlike a hydrometer, only a few drops are required for a sample. To use, apply 2-3 drops to the prism face, close cover, and look through the eyepiece while aiming your refractometer at a light source.

Our refractometers measure from 0-32° Brix, with an accuracy of +/- 0.2° Brix. They also include automatic temperature compensation for temperatures between 50-86° F, which eliminates the need to consult temperature correction charts.

Maybe it's me Review by charles
I have used this product for 6 batches of home brew. I get very erratic results when viewing samples. On my last brew I got preboil gravity readings from 1.051 to over 1.070 with 5 readings from the same sample with same temperature. Post boil readings were equally erratic. This has been my experience so far. Will keep trying to make it work. My old hydrometer gives consistent results - always has. (Posted on 4/17/15)
Good for OG only Review by Brad Brewer
WARNING: Only use this device for measuring the OG of your wort. After it ferments and alcohol is present, you need to read the FG in Brix, and then use the handy calculator provided above (or a hydrometer). I was getting almost 0.010 too high on my FG and didn't know why at first. (Posted on 1/13/15)
Don't waste money on a hydrometer Review by Jim
I've been brewing for about a year. I've used a hydrometer since batch 2. Using a hydrometer is such a PITA. Every time I've used it, I despise pulling the wort I just spent so long brewing out of the pot to test the sugars. Then, I can either risk an infection, or dump out my sample. When brewing small batches, this is a lose-lose situation. Plus, I broke one hydrometer while taking a sample. They are fragile, and worthless.

This refractometer is amazing. I've used it once, but it seems solid and a much better investment. I'm mad at myself for not buying one earlier. Save yourself the time and money and buy one of these now. (Posted on 1/2/15)
Must-Have Tool for Brewing Review by Michael
This is so easy to use and only requires a drop or two of wort (direct SG estimate from device) or beer (SG and ABV estimates using Northern Brewer web-based calculator) that I can't believe it took me this long to get one. I absolutely love it. I bought a bag of 100 disposable, 3-mL pipettes from Amazon to grab my samples. (Posted on 7/20/14)
Simplification Review by Michael
The Brix has totally simplified my brew day and lessened the task of cleaning and sanitizing simply to garner a OG and FG. I appreciate time saved and simplicity of the equipment. This is a definite buy for those who have progressed into brewing often, and even those just getting started. It is much more simple that hydrometer use. (Posted on 1/30/14)
Awesome tool Review by Kevin
Great for 1 gallon brewing. Quick, clean, easy to use, and takes only a few drops to test your brew. Simply Wonderful. (Posted on 1/13/14)
Great Review by Amanda
Great product! (Posted on 1/4/14)
great product Review by Fabio
I brew small batches and I'm happy to use only a few drops of wort on the refractometer instead of filling the hydrometer and waste beer. Checking the gravity takes only a few seconds and makes the brewing session easier. (Posted on 1/4/14)
Great Refractometer at a good price. Review by Brad
Used this today brewing my Whitehouse honey porter extract kit and it worked great. Its nice to take a gravity reading without wasting enough wort to float a hydrometer. All this uses is a couple drops of wort and is much easier to read than trying to guess the gravity because of bubbles in the hydrometer test tube. (Posted on 1/2/14)
Works great Review by Roger
This works great. I save a lot of wort
With this.

A Must Purchase For Every Homebrewer Review by Michael
If you don't already have one of these you should definitely stop waiting and pick it up already. Simple in concept and in its use. No more large sampling and potentially wasting of beer in order to get an accurate reading, you just need a couple drops. (Posted on 12/20/13)
easy to use Review by brian
simple instructions-love the site glass, very easy to see inside and use the chart-can be a novice and not mess this up! Seems to be extremely well constructed. (Posted on 12/18/13)
Great Product Review by John
I recently switched to all-grain brewing, and this refractometer takes all of the guess work out of knowing where I stand with the starting gravity.

It's also easy to calibrate. I used a drop of condensed water from a pot lid. (Posted on 12/14/13)
Very Accurate Product Review by Tim
Glad to finally get this product. Very accurate and easy to use. Much easier and less messy as other methods of measuring gravity. (Posted on 12/10/13)
Best purchase ever Review by Coprolite
Maybe a little melodramatic, but this might be the best piece of brewing equipment I've bought. Yes, it's not as accurate as a hydrometer. Yes, you have to correct for the presence of alcohol. But it's so simple to take a reading that there's no reason not to measure gravity every time you have to touch the brew. For curiosity, I've correlated it to a hydrometer and it's close enough as far as I'm concerned. (Posted on 12/8/13)

Great product for checking gravities (Posted on 12/2/13)
Performed as advertised Review by Paige
A quality instrument. The unit was calibrated at the factory as verified using distilled water after taking delivery. Unfortunately, the refractometer cannot do it all, and a hydrometer is still necessary for truly accurate measuring of ABV. I use it to get OG levels before pitching yeast IMO, not a necessity, but rather a luxury. (Posted on 11/24/13)
Great Tool for All-Grain Review by Grant
I added this to my brew kit a little bit ago and glad I made the purchase. Perfect for checking gravity during the boil. I still use a hydrometer after fermentation. (Posted on 11/10/13)
Greater Specificity without Beer Loss Review by Timothy
I've always got some beers in cask so instruments that allow me measure gravity or PH with minimal invasion are fantastic. The precision is really good, but agree with Russell on calibrating, always a good idea. (Posted on 11/1/13)
Every ounce counts Review by Eric
Before getting this I used the mad brewer kit and every time I filled that giant test tube to check specific gravity I shuddered to think I just wasted a beer checking original and final gravity. This thing uses only a drop and is way easier to read and you'll never need to do any temp calculations ever again. It is a bit costly but over a lifetime of brewing it'll pay for itself one bottle of beer per batch at a time... :) (Posted on 10/26/13)
Accurate and Easy Review by Nick
I don't know why I waited so long to buy a refractometer. For a long time I was in the dark ages trying to measure my pre and post boil gravity using a traditional hydrometer waiting for the wort to cool down and ultimately getting inaccurate data or sometimes forgetting to come back and record the data. The refractometer makes this step super quick, easy, and pretty accurate! Do yourself a favor and buy one of these :) (Posted on 10/25/13)
Excellent Quality Review by Leon
I got this refractometer for sever reasons: 1) I have obtained different reading using two different hydrometers while testing the same wort; 2) I'm new to this game and based on previous reviews by others, this was a must have item; and 3) did I mention that I need all the help I can get?

Great product. I would recommend you invest in this piece of equipment. Also, it will spare some wort/wine. (Posted on 9/26/13)
beer saver! Review by Shawn
Incredibly easy to use - calibration was dead-on out of the box.

I play with alot of 1 gallon batches, so the ability to take DROPS of wort instead of OUNCES to get OG measurements is a big plus to me. Brix conversion is relatively simple as there are a number of conversion programs out there to do the work for you!

The only downside is I no longer have a 2-3 oz sample to savor after I get my gravity readings! (Posted on 9/15/13)
Making life simpler, and wasting less wort Review by levi
I wanted one of these for a while, but couldn't justify dropping $50 when I already own multiple hydrometers. When NB put together the package deal where you got a free refractometer with the purchase of a steel head pump, I was all over it. I see a lot of reviews that said they paid too much, is free too much?

I love it. It's simple to use and easy to read and in the long run you waste less wort. (Posted on 9/12/13)
Great product Review by Jon
Works as advertised. Reads easy simple to use (Posted on 9/10/13)
Much easier to use Review by Brian
I have a hydrometer but I never used it because it just wasn't very convenient and I have come across varying correction factors for temperature so I didn't really trust it. I admit, I have not cross checked my refractometer with distilled water or against other devices but this is easy to read and MUCH easier to use. I will certainly be using it in the future. Homebrewer Must Have Review by Russell
I dealt with the hydrometer for years and finally broke down and bought this refractometer. With the hydrometer I felt like I was always guessing at the gravity readings due but with the refractometer I feel that I'm getting pretty spot on.

NOTE: NB says that these are calibrated before they leave the factory; however, I had to calibrate mine when it reached my house. It was really easy so it wasn't a big deal. I would recommend to other homebrewers. (Posted on 8/26/13)

Cool Tool Review by Mark
I like it. It is simple to use. In fact, I have friends that had never used a refractometer before that were able to pick it right up and figure it out. Glad to have that tool in my tool belt. (Posted on 8/20/13)
Beautiful instrument, accurate and so easy to use. Review by Karen
I never thought using this instrument would be so easy to use and to clean. Nice hardcase included.
Thanks again N.B. Your company rocks! (Posted on 7/12/13)
Don't judge by the pics Review by Lee
As it's been mentioned before, the scales are not accurate in the pictures. However, the actual refractometer's scales are correct (mine reads 1.084 at 20, not 1.078). As with all refractometers, the ATC doesn't do anything - I get very different readings at 60, 70 & 80 degrees. I find it's very accurate if you get it with 3 or 4 degrees of the calibration temp, but no more than that. (Posted on 4/1/13)
Good for the money Review by Daniel
As a poster below noted you can find this much cheaper . .try $35 cheaper elsewhere on the web though be patient with shipping =)

To get it calibrated use distilled water and bring adjustment screw to 0 brix/ 1.000 sg . . . simple as that. Use the chart included to temp correct but check more than once to be sure. This is the best way to avoid losing precious wort and beer. (Posted on 8/9/12)
Better prices elsewhere Review by Matthew
Bought this and then found out you can find this exact same refractometer for a good $15 less (incl. shipping) if you shop elsewhere online... (Posted on 7/22/12)
inaccurate conversion? Review by Anonymousbrew
i'm a little confused by the conversion from Brix/SG. I cant however find a calculator that gives me the same conversion at higher gravities as this tool. (ie - 20 = 1083 vs 1078).

I''m worried that i'm getting inaccurate readings through some ranges. I'm sure maybe one side is accurate - but which one? the whole reason i bought it was so i wouldnt have to do the calculations between Brix and SG - but with all the calculators i'm using, i'm geting 1-2 off in the low range up to 6 off at 20 brix.

Wrong scale Review by Dane
I've been having odd results in my brews for months after buying this refractometer, and relying on the SG scale. The SG scale on this device is completely wrong. Looking at the pictures above, the device shows that 20% Brix is equal to 1.077 SG. Using the calculator at the link provided in the product details states that it should be 1.083 SG, which follows every equation I've been able to find. Why is this so far off the mark!? This is an unique refractometer, with both brix and Specific Gravity,it use very convenient. (Posted on 5/4/11)
Fantastic Review by Eric
Works great for taking readings during the boil to help hit your target gravity. Just be sure to take a couple of readings and stir between them - I've seen a lot of difference between two samples taken within seconds of each other. (Posted on 4/29/11)
Cool toy! Review by Matthew
I like the minimal amount of wort sampling needed for this. Saves on beer and the possibility of contaminant exposure.

I also found this great link if you also want to try to use this for F.G. readings:

Awesome for wort sampling Review by Hooch
Great for knowing when you should stop boiling, by checking your OG before shutting the burners off. And when to stop sparging too, by following the stop at 1.012 rule. Love my new toy! Thanks guys for carrying this in SG scale. (Posted on 9/10/10)
A great product Review by Jeff
For general homebrewing use this product works great. Having the Brix scale as well as SG units is handy. It is quality made and should hold up to regular use. I wouldn't stuff this in my pocket or throw it around, but for brewing every weekend or so, it is accurate and worth the price. Tired of breaking hydrometers? This is a great solution. Only needing a couple of drops is a great advantage over hydrometers as well. (Posted on 7/8/10)
Awesome! Review by The Power
I used this for the first time today. It makes a huge difference. It's incredibly easy to read. Just read off the scale. I always had problems with the hydrometer due to foam, meniscus and plus it always seemed that the hydrometer would "stick" to the side of the test container. With this, I just put a couple of drops on it and read the number off the scale. Very simple and clear. Plus I could take a few drops today while I was boiling and test. When I hit my target gravity, I just turned off the burner. The past several brews, I've boiled too long and overshot gravity and had to top off with water. Which wastes, propane, time and introduces the potential for contamination from the top off water.

I thought this would only be useful on brew say since introducing alcohol during the ferment can throw off the reading. But More Beer has a spreadsheet available at that takes that into account.
