Fermenter's Favorites™ Yeast Starter Kit - 1000 ml

SKU: 7055

A yeast starter is one of the easiest and most dramatic ways to improve the quality of your homebrew. A single pack of yeast does not contain the optimal number of cells to ferment many types of beer - especially high-gravity beers and lagers. Available with 1000 ml and 2000 ml flasks.

    Fermenter's Favorites™ Yeast Starter Kit - 1000 ml

    Details

Propagating a single pack of yeast using our yeast starter kit exponentially increases the number of cells you pitch. With a higher pitching rate, you will see a shorter lag phase, lower amounts fermentation-related off-flavors, and less incidence of bacterial contamination in your beer.

Preparing a yeast starter is easy - you mix a very small batch of malt extract wort (without hops), briefly boil and chill it, then ferment it in a flask a day or two before brewing the main batch. The yeast cells from a single pack of yeast will reproduce in the starter, increasing in number from a few dozen billion cells to hundreds of billions.

The 1000 ml yeast starter kit is a great general-purpose size for five gallon batches. It features a heat-resistant borosilicate glass flask, a foam stopper, one pound of DME, and complete instructions.

If you are not using starters, you should start. Review by Tim

It is really easy to make a starter culture a day or two before the brew, and it lets you know that some 'slow starter' strains are actually healthy before you pitch them. I think getting a good pitch rate is really important for getting a good final product, and this starter kit really helped me make better beers. FYI, be careful swirling a late starter culture, as the gas bubbles coming out will blow the foam right out of the flask, and maybe even some of the starter. (Posted on 7/24/14)

Works great with my Vortex stir plate. My beer quality has gone through the roof using a starter. No lag time and stronger yeast makes much better beer. (Posted on 3/5/14)

I had my doubts that a starter would make a difference once the yeasties got working. Boy was I wrong! More yeast to start means a faster start, less stress and a better beer. (Posted on 2/26/14)

this flask is a great investment, i bought it with good intentions to make great beer, but didn't have a use for it till my irish ale yeast arrived kinda slushy/ frozen. the quality of the product is great but the instructions are a little vague.... i followed all of the instructions, up to the part where " you may want to decant, the spent wort".... and my results weren't quite what i expected and i didn't know much better but i didn't have any yeast slurry after 9 hours of refrigeration... and tried to decant... i believe a dvd instructional much like the " making a yeast starter" youtube video northern brewer has online would have saved me and helped much more than the written paper instructions alone. Used this to make a started for a wee heavy. First time I've ever made a starter for a beer. Boy did it work well. The krausen on this thing was insane. Beer isn't finished fermenting yet but I'm feeling real good about it and I think the starter has a lot to do with this. A great buy. (Posted on 12/11/13)
Why Did I Not Do This Sooner! Review by Dave

I wish I had done this much sooner. I will probably do a yeast starter for any gravity brew now. My local microbrew brewer advised me this would take the sweet out of some of my beers by getting a much better fermentation. It really took of and lasted longer with the yeast starter. A must have. Never buy the same yeast again! Review by Robert

This starter kit is the best way to quadruple your yeast from a whitelabs vial or wyeast smack pack. Takes about 25 minutes of your time including clean up. I highly recommend using a stir plate with this kit. Best part of making a yeast starter, in my opinion, is that after I've harvested the yeast, I decant off enough to fill the whitelabs vial again before pitching the yeast, and I have enough yeast for a starter next time I brew with that yeast strain! I've avoided buying the same yeast since I got the kit. This kit has paid for itself in yeast alone after 3 batches. Not to mention this kit is a necessity when brewing high gravity beers. All in all, great product! (Posted on 11/15/13)

This was very easy, but make sure you give the yeast enough time. I tried for 24 hours and that wasn't enough, but I had my brew going and had to use it anyway. It was very convenient to brew right in the flask over a gas flame. (Posted on 10/28/13)

I purchased this trying to figure out why my beer has this funky taste to it. First batch after using this made all the difference in the world. I am sure as I advance that I will want the 2000ml starter but tried the double starter in the 1000ml and it was even better the second batch. Must have! (Posted on 10/3/13)

This kit worked very well for a starter I made for an IPA. The flask was very good quality. I boiled my wort directly in the flask outdoors on the side burner of my grill and it worked out great. I really like that I was able to boil the wort and put the flask right into an ice bath and prevented the whole transfer of liquids. Highly recommend. (Posted on 9/30/13)
    Too Small Review by Scott

I can't comment on the durability, since I don't have a gas stove. My starters are cool by the time I put the liquid into the flask.

As for the size, if you are planning on making 1L starters with a stir plate, it's too small. The krausen will push the foam stopper right out of the top... and hefe yeast, forget it. What a mess. I'd recommend a starter that holds 3L for 5 gallon batches. This way if you make a 1.5-2L starter it will have plenty of headspace. (Posted on 9/25/13)

Picked this kit up to help with my first pumpkin brew. Everything worked as advertised and I had fermentation chugging along nicely five hours after pitching. Generated an enormous yeast cake that I was terribly sad to see go down the drain after racking to secondary. Well worth the expenditure if you're just starting out with starters and probably still useful even with some of the bigger brews out there. (Posted on 9/24/13)
Welcome addition to my brewing process Review by W. Lynn

Like most brewers I started with the kits from a local store and just dumped the yeast packet into the primary fermentation. I achieved fermentation but the results were weak. Purchased this kit in March '13 and the results are very positive. The fermentation process is stronger and the results are a better beer at the finish. Get this kit, you will see the results with your first batch. (Posted on 9/5/13)

I read a few comments about the flask being very fragile... It's a big piece of glass, I don't know what people expect. Yes, you have to be careful with it. But it's not going to break if you stare at it cross-eyed.

Shortly after purchasing this I realized that I need to make larger starters for some of my bigger beers. A 2L flask would have been a better option. (Posted on 1/18/13)

This works as I found out...but after I started using a stire plate (which is GREAT!) I found this was to small. The yeast grew so much it pushed the top off and I had a yeast goo mess. Go with the 2000ml. (Posted on 7/6/12)
A great starter starter kit Review by Jeff

Don't be fooled, brewing beer is all about the yeast! This is an exceptional starter kit. After using this for the past 5 or 6 batches to make starters for even the lowest gravity beers in my closet, all the fermentations have been solid, quick to become active, and never fail to get the job done. I would suggest spending the few extra bones on the 2000ml version. I ended up buying the larger flask from my LHBS for $28 alone! You can always build a smaller (500-800mL) starter in the larger flask. Don't forget to buy the stir bars. Build your own stir plate and you're off to some happy yeast for making better beer. First time using yeast starter and makes a 200% difference. Faster and more vigorous fermentation. Only complaint now that I have been checking things out is size...because 2L is really the one to spend a few extra bucks for now that I'm looking at it for few bigger brews. Otherwise great kit and easy instructions to follow. Will never not use a starter again. (Posted on 12/20/11)
    uneven bottom Review by hoovdizzle

the bottom of this flask is uneven and will result in a lot of noise if you use it on a stir plate. unknown brand.

you can find 2 liter pyrex flasks online for around $30, they are higher quality.

i'm normally very satisfied with northern brewer products, but they could stand to upgrade the flasks they sell. (Posted on 4/15/11)

This was an awesome addition to my brewing supplies. No doubt the yeast were ready to be thrown in with the wort but be careful and make sure you use a blow off system. My air lock blew off within the first 5 hrs! Ended up with hops all over my 15' ceiling. I put a blow off tube on it the next day and it got clogged with more hops and blew again. Make sure you use a large blow off tube if you are going to start your yeast early. Its awesome what the yeast can do :) (Posted on 2/21/11)
Opt for the 2L starter Review by TJ
    Rating
Bought this starter kit thinking it would be sufficient for all beer styles. Turns out that for most styles your better off using a minimum of a 2L starter. 5L is probably overkill, but 2L is much more versatile. Wish I would have known this before buying the 1L. Honestly, I'd try to buy a 3 or 4L. (Posted on 1/14/11)
