Jake's Cascadian Dark Ale BIAB All Grain Kit

SKU: U0854

Roasty overtones brace a malty backbone, a quiet bitterness from Palisades to keep it legit, and a resinous yet citrus tinged hop aroma to bring it out of the dark.

All kits yield 3 gallons and include blended grain malts, hops, yeast, and complete instructions. All-grain kits use malted grain as the base for the finished beer; in addition to familiarity with basic brewing techniques and the equipment for fermenting, siphoning, and bottling, you will also need equipment for brew-in-a-bag all-grain brewing.

CDA or Black IPA? Doesn’t matter to Mr. Keeler. This recipe was an attempt to capture all the things Jake likes about the contested style: roasty overtones brace a malty backbone, a quiet bitterness from Palisades to keep it legit, and a resinous yet citrus-tinged hop aroma to bring it out of the dark. The effort was a success, and now the recipe that marked Jake’s 3 gallon BIAB epiphany can now be a game-changer for you too.

Outstanding Beer! Review by Pete
Rating
I had a few of these over the last few days after two weeks of bottle conditioning and it is SUPERB. I can't wait to see how it tastes after some more time in bottle. Side note: I am not a big fan of uber-hoppy beers, so I called NB and asked if they would suggest adjusting the ingredients. The very helpful brewmaster suggested I reduce the next-to-last hop addition from one ounce to one-half ounce (for a total of five ounces vs. five and one-half ounces of hops). The result is the best beer I have made yet! I almost passed on buying this kit, but since there are only four 3-gallon kits offered, I figured I'd give it a try. Boy, am I glad I did!

Even better with age Review by Mike

An update of my 11/26/12 review. I always save a few to see how they age. As good as it was a year ago, it is outstanding now. Great job NB! Hope you come up with some more kits...the 1 gallon guys/gals get so many choices...how about us 3 gallon guys/gals? (Posted on 1/17/14)
Man oh man, this is good! Review by Paula

Excellent beer, but let it sit in the bottle for at least a month before trying it. I admit that I added to the grain bill a bit with the Nocturnal grain blend. What I have is probably closer to a stout than a CDA, but it's truly the best of both worlds. (Posted on 10/26/13)
Awesome CDA Review by Ralph

This is the best beer I have ever brewed. Definately consider it a CDA as I personally would consider an IPA dark or not, hoppier. I love BIAB brewing. However I am going to try 5gal batches because I love this beer so much it disapears to fast. (Posted on 4/18/13)
Best BIAB to date! Review by Paul

I've brewed the Oatmeal Cookie and now the Jakes from the Nothern BIAB collection and the Jakes CDA is perfection in a box. The 3 gal keg was kicked in less than a month- I loved it!!! I asked a few of my brewing buddies to sample and each were impressed with this beer. One went as far as saying "brew-pub" quality! This beer will be brewed again very- very soon!!! Roasty Hoppy Paradise Review by Dan from the Lou

I'm primarily an extract guy but this is my third BIAB and the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. This beer is perfectly balanced, has a beautiful hop/roasty aroma, and is incredibly smooth. The third week in the bottle is when this beer really develops. Hats off to you Jake, I will add this to the regular rotation. (Posted on 1/23/13)
Fantastic Review by Sean

Seconded on first all grain and best beer so far. Assertive roastiness and pungent hop aroma, but it's not at all unbalanced. Good, slightly dry mouthfeel despite the final gravity coming out a bit higher than I was expecting. There will be a lot of batches of this in my future. (Posted on 11/29/12)
Outstanding Kit Review by Mike

This was my first unsupervised "All Grain" attempt. I have completed seven solo extract brews, but I have to say this is the best homebrew of any I have ever had. These 3 gallons will go quickly. I will buy this one again and again. (Posted on 11/26/12)
Excellent Result Review by BT

My first 'All Grain' batch and it's almost certainly the best beer I've made to date. Loved the Brew in the Bag method. The hop aroma is tremendous. I would like to try letting the Mash go for another 15 minutes (90 instead of 75) to get a little better efficiency, but otherwise I couldn't be happier with it. It won't last long. Great Intro to All Grain Review by Ted

This was my first all-grain batch after 5 years of extract brewing, and it turned out better than expected. The head retention and lacing are amazing compared to my extract brews. The beer has a floral hop aroma, and a good amount of bitterness to pair with the dark malt. I deducted a star as the wort came in about 1.050 for o.g. instead of the advertised 1.060. I did get the grains pre-crushed, so maybe a double crush or finer crush will help in that regard. (Posted on 11/8/12)
