Details

Maris Otter is an "heirloom" barley variety grown entirely on the British Isles. It is a stubborn paragon of character and flavor, trumping commercial desires for high yield and disease resistance. Though replacement barley varieties have come after, it remains the most prized British malt for an astounding depth of flavor and aroma.

Much like that heirloom malt, we have insisted upon a classic formula - 100% Maris Otter, with no added caramel malts or simple sugars, no corners cut in the name of cost. The result is a malt extract worthy of the best brewers. It is an extract of unmatched complexity, sure to bring you the "wow"s you deserve.

1.036 ppg gravity contribution, 4-5 SRM, excellent fermentability, and authentic English character - grainy, bready, and slightly nutty. Just harness this built-in malt profile to your favorite English hops and yeast (we love this syrup combined with Wyeast 1945 NeoBritannia) for a faithful “real ale” quality never before accessible to extract brewers.

I don't know if there is any type of beer that this isn't good with. We have found it is a perfect base to use for most beer styles. Terrific extract! (Posted on 1/13/14)

I just used this in an Old Ale recipe (OG 1.089). It has a great malt character to it that I haven't gotten out of the other extracts from NB -- and the others are all great products too. (Posted on 1/6/14)

Better than all-grain! Review by Daniel

My uncle and I each brewed an IPA with those excellent new Zythos hops and Marris Otter. I used this extract and he went through all the labor and effort of mashing his malt all-grain style.

You literally cannot tell the two beers apart, Northern Brewers Marris Otter LME is the best I've ever used and the results speak for themselves! (Posted on 12/28/13)

A must have Review by Jason

I'm a partial-mash brewer, and I use this extract for any UK style or stout. When I used light extract before on a porter, it tasted like a brown ale. This gave it the bready, malty backbone it needed. (Posted on 12/14/13)

This extract is awesome, and gave my IPA a great depth of malt flavor that I usually on get with all grain brewing. I would definitely recommend this if you're brewing extract for any british ales or really any beer you're wanting a deeper base malt flavor in. (Posted on 12/12/13)
Great LME Review by Daniel
Rating
I used this LME to brew an English inspired java stout and it came out fantastic! It's almost impossible to find LME Maris Otter and Northern Brewer's is fantastic. Great biscuit flavor and certainly dark enough to give off a rich flavor. It worked well with fuggles and dark English steeping grains. (Posted on 12/2/13)

Nailed my gravity Review by Mike
Rating
Used the MO extract for the first time when I brewed my Holiday Hope Ale (a huge English Barleywine). The grain bill would have been too much for the mash tun so adding this still allowed for the OG I wanted and delivered the biscuity note I love from Maris Otter. Will use again for my next batch of Mild Ale. (Posted on 9/13/13)

This is my go-to extract. Use 6lbs. plus 2-3 lbs. dry plus a mixture of American bittering hops and British aroma hops for a great American/Brit hybrid IPA. (Posted on 8/21/13)
Can't tell the difference... Review by Bro Stefan
Rating
...between this extract and mashing my own Crisp MO. I mostly brew all grain, but once a year I do a big English Barley Wine. This year I doubled the batch size, larger then my MT could hold so I used this to make up the difference. I did a side by side of my wort from the mash and this extract at the same SG. my two brewing partners and I could not tell the difference in a triangle test. (Posted on 8/14/13)

I have been consistently impressed with the quality of Northern Brewer's LME. I tried my LHBS LME but it just doesn't taste as fresh.

Recently I used the MO LME in Jamil's ESB recipe and it tastes great. You won't be disappointed. (Posted on 7/1/13)

I used Maris Otter Malt Syrup in a Irish Cream Ale recipe and the results were great. I've only been brewing for about 6 months and out of the 7 batches I've done so far, the Irish Cream Ale is is tied with a Honey Nut Brown Ale for my best batch. (Posted on 4/24/13)

Just made my 3rd batch of the Innkeeper and first one with the Maris Otter. Didn't think the beer could get better but I was wrong. Its still young (week in the keg) but already I am loving this beer. Gonna try using it in an English IPA next, but no doubt will be good. (Posted on 12/31/12)
Unremarkable, Higher FG Review by Travis
Rating
I was excited to try this extract after all I've read about the Maris Otter malt. Unfortunately, after a couple of brews with this extract (an APA and an ESB), I have to say that I don't really notice a significant flavor difference from the organic light malt extract which I normally use. Also, it appears to be less fermentable. Relative to the organic light, my final gravities have been consistently 5 points higher. Otherwise, it's a perfectly fine extract on it's own, just not particularly striking. (Posted on 12/15/12)
Flawless Review by Thomas
Rating
As an all-grain brewer for 20 years, I forgot how easy it is to use extract. I converted one of my recipes that use Maris Otter over to this extract and the results were great. Same fresh biscuit British flavor you expect from this base malt. I would be hard-pressed to tell my all-grain version from the one made with this extract. (Posted on 10/15/12)
