Details

PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) is a patented alkali cleaner originally developed for Coors, now widely used in commercial breweries across North America. Use 1 to 2 ounces per gallon for cleaning kettles, 3/4 ounce per gallon for fermenters, kegs, tanks, and other equipment. Soak equipment overnight in PBW solution; rinse the following morning - no scrubbing required! Will not damage rubber gaskets, soft metals, or your skin. PBW can effectively clean items that can't be reached with a brush or sponge, and is strong enough to remove thick, difficult, caked-on organic soils. PBW is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and will not harm septic systems.

Love this stuff, best thing I've ever bought. The easiest cleaner I've every used on my carboys. Always keep this round at all times. (Posted on 12/20/12)
More than your average cleaner Review by Joshua

I use it for just about everything. It works great on cleaning dried residue from the insides of carboys. Works great at removing labels from bottles. You can't sanitize until you clean, and there is no easier way than PBW. (Posted on 7/5/12)
Does a great job without scrubbing Review by Shad

This stuff works great! I have taken carboys, hoses and airlocks after messy, aggressive fermentations and soaked them overnight in this stuff. The next day, everything is clean! No scrubbing needed! This stuff easily removes dried material inside your carboy AND discoloration from your blow off hoses. (Posted on 5/23/12)

After washing some bottles, I decided to put two pyrex dishes in that were covered with years of baked on food. A week later, I pulled them out and they were completely clean. Awesome product. If you want some great info, check out Brew Strong's episode about cleaning on the Brewing Network. They talk with the owner of 5 star about pbw. Awesome cleaner. (Posted on 4/7/12)

I love this cleaner. I bought a large plastic tub from one of the box stores and its couldn't be any simpler. I even throw stubborn dishes and pans in it. I does make hoses cloudy, but with no ill effect to my brew. (Posted on 3/1/12)
A carpet and wood, really? Review by Andrew

I came home to find my Great Dane and Bassett hound got into an extract kit. The Dane ate the grains, and the Bassett was rolling around on the carpet eating the extract. You know how sticky and gooey it is... after the initial cleanup, I filled a kettle with hot water and PBW and used a cloth to blotch/rub the carpet and the wood threshold. All the extract came clean without a problem and the carpet is fine!

And brewing equipment? I used it on a fellow brewer's carboy and it has never been this clean after only an overnight of soaking. I swear by this stuff! (Posted on 2/26/12)

Does just what is claims to do, only better. I got an itch and soaked my fish tank top glass in PBW. It removed deposits that wouldnt come off with a scotch pad.

This stuff is great for cleaning the inside of kegs and carboys. The key is using hot water and soak time. Like I stated above, it is amazing when it comes to organic deposits.

Really good cleaner Review by Jonny

I use this on all my glass and plastic gear. I'm a little paranoid about using it on my aluminum brew kettle and copper wort chiller. But, it works especially great on glass bottles and fermenters. It gets my equipment squeaky clean without
scrubbing (as advertised). Soak beer bottles for an hour or two and the labels fall right off. Just wipe off the glue with a cloth and rinse. It doesn't foam, but it has a slippery feel to it (similar to OxyClean), so you know when it's all rinsed off. My only complaint is I wish it didn't cost so much, since I tend to use a lot of it. Great stuff Review by Kevin
Once you've used PBW you'll finally realize what you've been missing out on. This will clean every step of your brewing process with minimal effort. Bottles with month-old moldy beer rings? No problem. Save on the elbow grease, get PBW to do the hard work for you. Just a heads up - it will eat away at your skin slightly, so be careful how long you spend up to your elbows in this stuff. Great for may general uses like cleaning carboys, removing bottle labels (soak for a few hours and they just fall off) as well as general household chores. Buy the large size, you will use it.
I do not think this is used for sterilizing (I use one-step for that), and definitely needs a good rinsing after use. Also I would recommend gloves when exposed for a while as it is pretty strong stuff. (Posted on 3/30/11)

I love this stuff. I bought the 8 pound version and this stuff really works. Just don't to leave your hoses in it for too long, it will cloud them. (Posted on 3/23/11)

I thought I was doing a pretty good job keeping my equipment clean. Wow! After using a cycle of PBW through the equipment, I found out how wrong I was. My stuff wasn't even close to clean. PBW made my brew kettle mash tun, and immersion chiller shine more than I've ever seen. Especially the immersion chiller... after seeing the matter floating in the cleaner, I'm really not sure how my beer even tasted remotely okay before. Took off the film from the glass carboys as well. Definitely worth every penny. I won't think of brewing without cleaning my equipment with PBW now. (Posted on 3/13/11)

I've used PBW for three years now and nothing else can even compare! When I clean my equipment in my kitchen sink, the sink actually got cleaner along with the equipment so it pulled double duty. I will not go without it!! (Posted on 1/7/11)

I fly through this stuff. No only brewing equipment but also daily cleaning and tough stuck on messes.
This stuff rips through dirty carboys and dried on krausen like butter. Cleans my brew pots in a flash. Removes bottles labels with no effort (except 3Floyds - what kind of glue are they using?). Makes my Mash Tun sparkling clean. I even cleaned my 69' Ford engine block with it.
If you can afford it... get it! (Posted on 1/4/11)

Best cleaner available Review by FooBrew

Been using this stuff for many years now. I initially switched after trying lots of different ones like Straight-A, B-Bright and others. Nothing compares to PBW. I use it for everything; CIP'ing pump lines and chiller, cleaning fermentors, removing labels from bottles, and cleaning faucets and other small parts. The only thing I don't use it for is cleaning tap lines, for that I use BLC which is a lot stronger and nasty to get on skin but can clean lines really quickly.

PBW isn't caustic to your skin but it will dissolve the oils almost instantly leaving you with dry, irritated fingers the next day. I use the Blichman glove with it whenever I'm going to be dunking my hands in it more than a few times.

FYI, the metal used for many swing top bottles doesn't react well with PBW so be careful about soaking those. It forms a white coating on the metal.

One of Coors 'best kept secrets' Review by TJ

I have been using this product for about 2 years.

It has been my experience that the PBW will easily remove what using the following may not--MEK, paint thinner, WD-40, detergent, 4000# pressure washer.
Take off" is not very descriptive. From cleaning crudy wine/beer bottles to a mesh grilling cover, this is easily the best product I have ever found.

However, If you are too poor, cheap or just so stubborn that you like to take the slow and dfficult route, this is where you will want to pass. TJ

Great for Bottle Reconditioning Review by Ryan

Came across a ton of english pint sized bottles and plastic 16 bottle carriers that had been stored outdoors for who knows how long. Bought a cheap 55gal trash can, threw in some PBW and hot water, submerged all the bottles and let soak for a couple days in my garage. Used a dish scrubber to brush off the label and adhesive (which came right off), gave em a rinse, and they were good to go. Much easier than previous attempts at label and adhesive removal. Good stuff, but a little harsh on the skin so make sure you glove up. (Posted on 9/21/10)

PBW has worked flawlessly on every brewing and winemaking task i've thrown at it. I was really impressed with how it cleaned my stainless Bunn coffee carafe. It had been stained for a long time and i havent seen anything that would make a dent in the stain, even Oxy-Clean. I added a teaspoon to the pot with some warm water and let it soak overnight and it was clean the next morning!! Only gave 4 pints only because it is pretty pricey as opposed to oxy clean (Posted on 7/7/10)
