SMASH American Session Ale Extract Kit

SKU: UB10030

Is it a half IPA? Is it a pale ale? What’s in a name, after all? We’re taking you back to school, back to basics, with this SMASH (single malt single hop)-style delight. Not only are we going back to school, we’re hitting the latest in style-confounding marketing-speak: American Session Ale.

We strongly recommend ordering dry yeast in the summer months. We do include complimentary ice packs with all liquid yeasts. It is difficult to guarantee that the ice packs will survive the trip given transit times and particularly hot temperatures.

SMASH is about taking things back - way back, to when American pale ale was edgy and new. The thing is, time travel is hard, and we’re thinking there’s enough Cascade-only pale stuff out there, so we’re going to use a decidedly new-school single hop: Simcoe. The pine and jungle stinker herself, Simcoe is boastful and bombastic, packing tons of hop flavor and aroma into a neat little package. SMASH takes a clean, dry malt base, with a low gravity for extra drinkability, and piles on a healthy dose of delicious hoppiness. Think of it as a way to deliver a metric hogshead of hop flavor and aroma in a tidy 4.5%ABV package.

Best overall beer on Northern Brewer Review by Matt
This is a winner, and my new go-to brew kit. The kit came out great, so refreshing and delicious. For some reason it fermented longer than my other kits and that carbonation really showed up in the end. With that, the hops and the clean finish, this is the most "commercial craft" beer I've brewed.

Also, it's easy to brew and cheap! I have a one-gallon kit that I added a second carboy to for making 2 gallons at a time. Since there is only one kind of hop, the fractionated additions are simple. My out of pocket cost ends up being like 8 bucks for a 12 pack, less than most 6 packs of craft IPAs in the store.

The only problem is that my girlfriend keeps drinking all of it ... (Posted on 4/20/15)
Delicious Session Pale Review by Trey
This american pale ale pours slightly more copper than the picture (typical for extracts to be darker than intended without adjusting for it). Clear, probably the clearest beer I've ever made. Head is thick with large bubbles, though head retention is lackluster. The nose is amazing. The addition of the dry hopping creates a beautifully aromatic brew. The taste is superb. Light, crisp, slight malty taste followed by moderated hop bitterness, and it finishes with delicious hop notes.

This kit is amazing. If you've been looking for something to help you get through summer, this is it.

Also, if you have the ability to get some green tea, cold brew it and add that concentrate. I did this with 2 gallons of this kit, and it is the best beer I've ever made. Delicious. I used about 3 oz for the cold-brewed green tea concentrate on two gallons. About 7 oz for a 5-gallon batch. Delicious brew! (Posted on 4/13/15)
Tweaked it a little with great results Review by Joe
I wanted to make a little bigger, more complex beer. I added some light DME to up the OG closer to IPA level. Bittered with a little magnum so I could use more Simcoe for flavor/aroma. I added some Cascade with the Simcoe for flavor/aroma additions and dry hop. The result was a danky, grapefruity IPA that everyone who tried it loved. Just ordered another kit and will brew it the same way. (Posted on 3/30/15)
SMASH A flavor that grows on you Review by Steve
Easy to brew. I have made this one twice now is better after a month of bottle age. Has a pungent aroma that that I like with bitterness that lingers for a short time. a gentle acidic bite. mouth feel and taste is some what of a light stinker of the aroma You smell . Not heavy. light yellow greenish color. Egg white head nice lace
OG1044 FG1008 4.73%abv. This one and American wheat modified are my main stays. while I always brew two other unknown brews that I have never tried as I wont to try them all. I always have at least one batch waiting for bottles and four to five beers to choose from in my cabinet but Smash and wheat are almost always present. (Posted on 3/30/15)
Not My Kind Of Beer, but I'm told it's Good Review by Nick
I don't like IPA's, they are too hoppy and bitter for my tastes, so why did I give this 4 stars? The stars are based on my friends reactions. I didn't brew this for myself, I made it for a friend who loves Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. Since he is kind enough to save me his empty bottles and even gives them a little rinse when they are empty, I figured a good way to show my gratitude was to make an IPA for him.

Well..he now has an IPA to drink whenever he visits or brings me empty bottles, and I have a steady supply of rinsed bottles! Not a bad trade. So, if you have a friend who likes Sierra Nevada or Lagunitas IPA and you want him to save you all his empties, make him a batch of this stuff!!

Fast, easy and fun! Review by EJCole
This kit was my second attempt at homebrewing and the results were greasy! I didn't believe it would be only four weeks from package to finished product, but following the recipe yielded perfect results. I priced this out similar combinations from my local homebrew shops and they couldn't compare to the price and quality of this kits ingredients. I plan on buying this kit more often as the hops really stood out for such an easily drinkable beer. I used the dry yeast option and all aspects of the fermentation process were right on target. Will buy again! (Posted on 2/8/15)
Smashing Baby Review by 2LTim
I love the Smash American Ale. A true session ale, I could drink this all night. Being an experienced brewer, I do look for quality extract kits with a signature flavor. This was the first time I brewed with Simcoe hops, so I wasn't quite sure what I was getting there, but I knew that the NB malt would be as good as always. Turns out, I love the Simcoe. I dry hopped for a week with one ounce, bringing out this beautiful flowery, citrus aroma and flavor. Very refreshing. Someone else suggested that there isn't much malt character. True, but this flavorful, easy to drink session ale is on the less filling spectrum, and tastes great too! Yes, I'll have another, please. (Posted on 2/6/15)
OK, a little boring Review by Jonathan
I thought this recipe was just OK. It's likely that I prefer more complex malt flavor. It's likely I would have a higher opinion of this beer in the summer after mowing the grass. As it is during winter it leaves a little something to desire. I love SIMCOE hops and this beer does a really good job of showcasing the flavor. Unfortunately, that's all it's got going for it. great tasting Review by Chuck
Just opened a bottle two weeks after bottling. Great taste!!! One of the best that I have brewed. (Posted on 11/29/14)
Excellent Beer Review by Michael
Excellent brew! Nice balance of hops. My wife liked it and she doesn't like "hoppy" beers. I kegged it about a week ago and it was good. After a week in the keg, it is fantastic! I am loving it. I made it for T-Day but it may not last that long! (Posted on 11/21/14)
Really nice session beer Review by Darren
I kegged this beer, which is what I do with all my beers. This was a relatively easy and fun brew to do and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. Pretty low gravity on mine, came out to 4.1% ABV, and had a nice light and clear color, especially for an extract brew. This is what I would call a "summer IPA" or a "party IPA". While it's not technically an IPA, it has hoppy characteristics without the heaviness of an IPA. You just want to keep drinking and drinking and drinking... I will make this one again for sure. (Posted on 11/16/14)
Great session beer Review by Rabibrew
Great tasting, easy to brew, low alcohol, great for the summer beer. Very hoppy for low alcohol. (Posted on 10/7/14)
Surprisingly bitter Review by Tim
Think Sierra Nevada Torpedo's. Pale color, pale malt, extremely bitter hop flavor, but a good sweet aroma. If I make this again, I'll definitely alter the hop schedule.. Best Beer I Have Made Review by John
This is the best beer that I have made so far. I kegged this one and absolutely love it. Great taste ! I will order it again soon for sure. (Posted on 10/5/14)
love it Review by dfigster
This kit is easy and if you like ipa's it's right on time. Great beer. (Posted on 9/17/14)
Almost too easy Review by Jeremy
This beer was as simple a beer to brew as I've encountered thus far (7 or 8 batches into my "career"). This was quick, easy, and almost seemed like I was forgetting to do things as it went so quick. Hit the OG right on target, and the FG was right on as well too, using the recommended Wyeast. Haven't had a chance to sample yet, but am looking forward to it (and will do soon.) (Posted on 9/15/14)
Best so far Review by Eric
I dry hopped mine with Cascade since I kinda lost a packwet of Simcoe, so I guess technically it wasn't a SMASH, but it was amazing. I also added a pound of sugar to bring the ABV to 6%. This was one of my favorite beers I've ever tasted. Keg was emptied in 4 days. Will definitely be making more. (Posted on 9/2/14)
Delicious - Cheap - Easy Review by KickPat
Super easy brew. Racked straight from the brew bucket to the keg after 4 weeks...force carbed for 24 hours, and all I can say is WOW...very enjoyable and flavorful brew! Ordering another kit for a consecutive batch!! (Posted on 8/27/14)
Be Patient Review by Damien
I followed this recipe to the letter and opened the first bottle at 5 weeks. Honestly I was dissappointed and thought I did something wrong. The flavors weren't quite right. HOWEVER, I waited about one more month and WOW!!
Natural citrusy flavors with the perfect balance of hops... maybe one of the best kits I've bought here. I will for sure be making it again! (Posted on 8/21/14)
2 hours to brew, cheap, crowd pleaser, drinkable in 19 days or less, why wouldn't you brew this? Review by Steve
What can I say. If you brew this beer people will like you. Words can't describe how well this beer was liked by everyone who tried it. And the best part about this beer is its simplicity. Only took 2 hours to brew, 7 days to ferment, 7 additional days to dry hop and was fully carbonated after only 5 days in the bottle. So in 19 days this beer was drinkable and had many positive reviews with all my friends from BMC drinkers to beer snobs. HUGE grapefruit aroma from the simcoe hops! I liked this recipe so much that it led me to start experimenting with my own SMaSH recipes. If your not sure about it, trust me, do yourself a favor and brew this! (Posted on 8/21/14)
Decent beer, just not that interesting Review by linda
This is a good lawnmower beer - light, some citrus, but not all that compelling. I don't regret brewing it, but won't brew again. (Posted on 8/10/14)
Good summer beer Review by Steve
Kegged this one. Is grapefruit flavor all the way through. Very tart and a bit of malt. Great pour and no off flavors. (Posted on 7/8/14)
Killer summer brew Review by Ed
This was my 9th extract kit and it's a killer beer. Quite possibly my favorite thus far - especially for the summer.

I think it's a little less hoppy than Brewer's Best APA kit and certainly not as hoppy as an IPA, but there is some good hop flavor and aroma in this beer for hop fans. That being said, people who are not "hopheads" should be able to enjoy this beer a lot too.

With all the great offerings Northern Brewer has, I find it hard to repeat a batch with so many other offerings available, but this is a damn good beer. If you have ANY liking of hops and want a quick turn around summer brew, order SMASH now. (Posted on 6/27/14)
Awesome Review by Brian
This beer was amazing. Simcoe rocks! (Posted on 6/21/14)
Easy & Tasty Review by Joseph
I've brewed this kit three times now - kegged it twice and bottled once. I have yet to be disappointed. The dry hopping is what makes this beer a winner. Great job, NB. This beer is now a regular offering for my guests and friends at my house. (Posted on 6/9/14)
DELICIOUS!! Review by Eric
My favorite so far. I had this beer bottled before I left for a vacation and completely forgot about it. I was extremely surprise when I finally realized it was still sitting in the closet. Great tasting beer!! (Posted on 5/21/14)
Impressed a seasoned homebrew veteran! Review by Matthew
This is a fantastic beer: easy to brew and delicious. Took it to my brew club and one of our more esteemed members said it was one of the best beers he's had in a long time. The Simcoe hops smell delicious and the finish is clean, with just enough hoppy bite. Highly recommend using Wyeast and rack to secondary. OG=1.042, FG=1.006, ABV=4.8%. (Posted on 5/16/14)
nice hoppy session - is what it says it is Review by jennifer
really impressed with this beer. It has a great hoppy open, very citrusy, but let it warm up a bit and the malt really starts to stand up and say hello. Bottled 3 weeks ago, and it is already definitely at the top of my 'easy to brew, easy to drink' list for summer. (Posted on 5/4/14)
Not bad at all! Review by Robert
Far beyond what I had thought it would be. A beer drinkers beer with a scent that just stays in your nose. (Posted on 4/29/14)
Brew this beer Review by Jason
I have brewed this beer twice. For such a simple beer, the flavor was amazing and incredibly drinkable. It is a great spring or summer beer with hints of citrus, everyone who tried it loved it. The second time I brewed it I added a tablespoon of sanitized orange zest to the secondary for the last 3 days, it was incredible. This is a beer you can drink everyday, you gotta try it! (Posted on 4/23/14)
Wonderful! Review by Eoin
Definitely buying this kit again! The Simcoe hops give this beer almost a lemon flavor. Really light but had a nice body. A real session ale. (Posted on 4/22/14)
The hops are incredible. Review by djpnighthawk
A simple recipe but what an incredible flavor. I tasted it at each stage and WOW! This recipe will be a staple, especially during the Summer. (Posted on 4/21/14)
nice session ale Review by 4acrebrew
I brewed this ale without using a bag to dry hop, so it had some hop particles floating in the 2nd. I carefully racked it to bottling bucket to avoid getting "floaties" in my beer. Great hop taste and the aroma is amazing! Let my friend's wife (who drinks that uber-light corporate stuff) try it... 1st sip got a "hmmm" finish her 1st, said it was GREAT and asked for another to prove her point. This one is surprising to many, but it's a crowd pleaser. Not too bitter, and Very drinkable. (Posted on 4/8/14)
Very Nice Review by Lester
Very nice, drinkable beer. Even though I added the hops to the secondary beer cleared up nicely. Was careful when bottling to avoid sediment in bottles. Just tried last night by campfire. Very pleased. Brewing Nut Brown Ale today. This is our third brew and have had good results each time. Even though instructions do not say, it is best to rehydrate dry yeast before adding.
Just learning as I go. Great fun. (Posted on 3/16/14)
All hops Review by Phil
SMASH is pretty good. Brewed 2/6/14, one week primary, 16 days in secondary, kegged 3/1. Today is 3/6. 28 days kettle to glass. OG: 1044; FG: 1008. 4.46% abv.

Appearance is golden, slightly cloudy, head is quite thick and foamy, after a few sips, head is down to a thin layer, clinging to the glass. I did not use a bag for the dry hopping, my first glass has a lot of hops floating around in it. That could just be what has settled at the bottom of the keg.. maybe it will improve. Pretty hazy (could be the hop debris)

Aroma is very nice, fresh.

Tastes very clean, dry. All hops. Quite bitter.

Mouthfeel: The nature of this beer results in a super light, crisp, spritzy mouthfeel. Kind of fizzy (force carbed for 5 days at 15 psi). Just about right. Kind of strange to drink a beer this hoppy that has the body of bud light.

Overall: Super drinkable and very hoppy. Seems like a great summer brew -I may brew it again in a few months. I like it. (Posted on 3/7/14)
2nd time brewing Review by Kyle
This is the second time around. I used Wyeast the first time and did a secondary fermentation. This time I dry hopped in the primary and used the dry yeast. The first batch was better. I'm not sure if it was the yeast or the lack of secondary. Still, this is a great brew. (Posted on 1/26/14)

Outstanding recipe Review by tlawky
One of the best kits I've purchased over the last 2-3 years from Northern Brewer. Put it side-by-side with Otter Creek's Session Ale and to be totally honest I found them absolutely 100 percent comparable. The hop balance and lightness makes for easy drinking brew and could also be a great way to introduce folks who either aren't familiar with homebrew or those that are anti-hop in a subtle way. Looking forward to brewing another batch this winter to get ready for spring and warm weather! (Posted on 12/16/13)
Oustanding Kit! Review by Dave
Gotta love a beer that's a piece of cake to make, tastes like an IPA, but has a low level of alcohol. You can definitely enjoy several of these beers without getting too goofy. If you want a beer with lots of clean hops flavor, but nothing that will make your morning rough, pickup one of these kits now! (Posted on 12/13/13)
Fantastic brew Review by Kyle
I just opened the first bottle and wow. I would equate this brew to Founder's All Day IPA for those in the midwest. It is a lighter brew but still with a very good hop flavor to it, putting it in that category of american pale ales or IPA's.

It was very easy to brew. I used the Wyeast yeast because the dry was not available. The wort fermented quickly. I transferred to a secondary for dry hopping. (I typically only secondary when dry hopping). I bottled this batch and the beer was well carbonated only a week later.

I would highly recommend this kit. I will definitely brew this again. (Posted on 12/1/13)
Great Basic Hop Lovers Beer Review by Eric
Very easy beer to brew, very easy beer to drink! Moving forward this kit will be my 'no fail' recipe moving forward. I will be trying this kit again and mixing in some various hop flavors to experiment. No need for experimentation though, this beer is great as it comes. An absolutely crowd pleaser. Big Hit Review by Andy
This is sixth of seven brews so far, and it is the most popular off all, including myself. I brewed it for my light beer friends and what a pleasant surprise. It is well balanced with a nice hop flavor. This will be part of my rotation...simple, quick and inexpensive. Way to go NB! (Posted on 11/18/13)
SMASH: Sexy Meritorious American Session Hit Review by Matt
Extremely easy brew and cheap and amazing. Brought a case of these to a film set and everyone gulped em down and told me how impressed they were with my homebrew. "If I bought a six pack of this for $12, I'd be a happy guy." Delicious/5 (Posted on 11/10/13)

Delicious. Fast. Simple. Review by jay
If your looking for fast turn-around time, this is your beer! This kit went from boil to bottle very swiftly. No secondary fermentation required. Carbonated great in the bottles in no time. Tastes great. I got several compliments on it at a Halloween party the other day. This is also a good base-kit to add your own ingredients to. (Posted on 11/5/13)
not bad Review by Paul
Sat in bottle for one week and it is good. should be great by next packer game. Sunday night !!! (Posted on 10/24/13)
Really easy - really good! Review by Trevor
This was my tenth batch this year and my first experience with dry hopping. I followed the recipe with no modifications - 1 week primary, then added the 1 oz. of Simcoe hops (dry hop) into primary and let sit one week (total two weeks in primary). Bottled the batch and sampled four days later - was delicious and well carbed. Had another sample today (i.e. one week after bottling) and am very pleased with the taste. A very hoppy brew and, IMHO, very much like an IPA. For the price and ease, this is a great kit! I think I'll try a "hop bag" in the future to minimize the amount of floating hops - this will make dry hopping even easier and "cleaner" than it already is. One of the best kits I have had! (Posted on 10/5/13)
ME LIKE SMASH!!! Review by David
This is my first kit from Northern Brewer. I just added dryhops so I can't really comment fully but the hydro sample I pulled tasted pretty damn good! This could become a staple beverage in my house... (Posted on 9/19/13)
Wow... Didn't expect that!!! Review by Rovell
I have made 2 batches of this and absolutely loved the second one compared to the first.
this is what i did...

1.) 8 days in primary..... never racked to secondary.

2.) dry hopped for 6 days.

3.) cold crashed for 18 hours and then let sit out in the bottling area while it got back to 67 degrees.

4.)bottled and ended up with exactly 50 12 ounce bottles (the first time i did it i had only 48 bottles due to loss while racking to secondary)

it seems as though just leaving it alone in the primary and then giving it a short cold crash worked wonders, i was able to siphon all the way from the top of the cake without disturbing any of it.
Every single bottle has nice clarity with a very small amount of sediment at the bottom.

Tastes like a good all day IPA that has just the right amount of bite and bitterness with some citrus notes coming through right before a nice smooth finish.

Taste tested the first bottle after ONLY 4 DAYS!!! just to see what i was working with.... was already extremely drinkable with good head retention and was already very developed when it came to flavor. In my opinion it is good to go right at 1 week but is even better after conditioning for 3 weeks. (Posted on 9/17/13)
I'm a fan of the SMASH Review by Mitchell
I bottled this batch three days ago. I dry hopped for the five days as suggested. I tried one on day two after bottling, and can tell already this is gonna be a good one. It already was trying to carb well since the low aging in the secondary. I attempted to use an additional screen while I was racking to the bottling bucket because using the hop pellets to dry hop leads to plenty of suspended hop particles and floaters in the secondary after 5 days still. I would recommend using some type of nylon bag to dry hop to contain the hop particles so they dont end up in your bottles. I got plenty in my bottles even with trying to be careful. However, I am a fan of IPA's with plenty of hops. This is a great marriage of a light beer and an IPA. This would appeal to most to like IPA styles. Nice floral and citrus notes. With the lighter body with the single malt and no steeping grains, the beer is extremely drinkable with light body and the dry hopping just puts icing on the cake. Highly recommended kit. Now I'm a huge fan of the Simcoe hops that was used in the kettle and for the dry hop. (Posted on 9/17/13)
Crisp, nice mid hop level, good aroma and flavor Review by Scott
This is my first ever home brew and it turned out great. I like ipa's but not the over the top variaties. This one is just right. Light. crisp and flavorful even though I ran out of patience and opened the first bottle three days early. Very happy with the kit and my results. (Posted on 9/3/13)
Triple Witching Weekend Review by Tom
I bought this kit, as well as a Cal Common kit and the goods to make an IPA, including the new Super Structure extract. Brewing thrice over the long Labor Day weekend. As usual, the order was packaged well and package(s) arrived sooner than expected. I have the SMASH and the IPA in the fermenter now. Cal Common to come. I'll update after imbibing. Perfect for the tap! Review by Stevo
This was around my 12th brew so, I'm relatively new to brewing and even newer to kegging. This is a GREAT brew to have on tap! I love IPA's but don't always want a heavy brew...SMASH has a citrusy nose, burst of hop flavor and a very smooth finish. Delicious! (Posted on 8/27/13)
Crisp beer with a bite - Excellent Review by Tomas
Floral, light bitterness, and a little tangy. Two weeks in the primary. Moved to secondary and dry hopped for another 8 days, rather than 5 per instructions, and bottled. Lots of sediment left over in the secondary. Opened a bottle after only 7 days and beer is already well balanced and carbonated. I'm happy with how this turned out. Great recipe! (Posted on 8/10/13)
