- Mesh may be too fine Review by Steve
-
I've used this for 3 batches so far. One the plus side It does a great job of keeping pellet hops out of the boil. I'm amazed at how much 1 ounce of pellet hops expands after it is boiled! I clamp mine on to the side of kettle and it is still long enough to reach almost to the bottom of the kettle. On the negative side the mesh is so fine that the bag fills up with water and looks like a water balloon if you use more than 1 oz of hops. This is because the water cannot get out because the fine mesh is clogged with hops. I wonder how this affects hop utilization. It is also very difficult to drain for the same reason. I have to hold it over the nearly boiling brew kettle for several minutes to get the water to drain. Ouch! Durability is also an issue, the seams on the bottom of the bag have already started to unravel and come apart. (Posted on 2/27/11)Rating - No Tieing String Review by Alan

For everyone wondering what the difference between this sack and the "Hop Sack" (Item No: 7318), this item does NOT have a string to tie off the top. I guess it's not a big deal. I still prefer these because they are large enough to hold a full 1oz of hops and you can just tie off the top by knotting the sack itself. Item No: 7318 is just barely large enough to hold .5 oz and still get a good utilization of the hops. Use these and tie off the top so you can be sure there is enough space for the hops to move around. (Posted on 11/8/10)Rating
