Dark without being roasty or bitter, full-bodied and malty without being syrupy ... Dunkel is another signature lager from Bavaria. The copper color and profound complexity comes from high-kilned Munich malt, with its toasty, bready aroma and full flavor. Our kit is rounded out with German hops and an authentic yeast strain to yield a smooth and satisfying dark lager. Serve alongside rye bread, cheese and mustard. Recommended: 2-stage cold fermentation and yeast starter.

This was my first lager. I followed the procedure to a t, excepting the use of a yeast starter. It turned out great, had a good finishing gravity (1.016), and no off flavors. No complaints. (Posted on 1/27/12)
A Proper Dunkel Review by william

I've made many trips to Bavaria in recent years and have never been able to enjoy a proper dunkel anywhere outside of that part of Germany. This kit is spot on...I Cant wait to try this all grain. As other have posted....malt is the center of this beer. Hops are only there to balance the sweetness so the drinker can enjoy those lovely bread crust melanoidens. This is a gulper folks so aim to attenuate this one well by starting with a large starter. I made a 1.5 L starter, fermented dry, decanted and added another 1.5 L wort and repeated a third time. I got mine down to 1015 and am enjoying a relatively dry bready malty guzzler in mein bayrisches glaskrug mit zindeckel. Prost! (Posted on 12/28/11)

Awsome Beer Review by Darren

I first drank this beer in Britain. It was my favorite by far. It's malty sweetnes and crisp finish is what made it one of the prefered beers of bavarian kings.

I filter this beer, because I find the slightest taste of yeast can damage it's delicate malty flavor. And, it makes it as clear as amber glass. (Posted on 6/12/11)
Best Dark Lager I have ever had. Review by Brian

I can't say enough about this beer . Malty and velvety smooth , restrained hop character , heaven in a glass . If you are a fan of dark lagers , do yourself a favor and buy this now!! You might as well plan on adding this to your brewing rotation , because once you've had this beer it's all over . In fact I'm ordering two of these kits right now !!! (Posted on 5/7/11)
