Chinook IPA Extract Kit w/ Specialty Grains

This American IPA has a relatively modest gravity and an immodest hop character derived entirely from a single hop variety. Chinook hops have long been used by US brewers for bittering additions, but their intense aroma and flavor have caught on only recently. This kit is a bit lower in gravity and lighter in body than our other IPA recipes, which enhances the perceived bitterness and reduces the aging requirements. It shows up in the glass with a reddish-gold color and a thick, resinous Chinook aroma that lingers after the glass is emptied.

Pleasing Review by Chip

I am a absolute fan of all IPAs bt the hoppier the better. I steeped some of my home grown cascade hopes with the grains. Not sure that was a good idea at the time. Followed the directions to the letter. I had to put a blow out tube in after only 8 hours. Primary for 2 weeks and secondary for 3. I dropped with 5 days before bottling. In the past, my beer has taken a long time to develop the appropriate carbonation. This time I added a little extra bottling sugar in hopes of getting a little carbonation. Something worked because after only 12 days in bottle it is EXCELLENT! Wow, Can't wait to see how it shapes up in a couple weeks, if it last that long. Good solid flavor and excellent follow through. The first sip tastes like...More. I will definitely buy this again. (Posted on 10/14/14)
First Brew Attempt Review by MattyJ

So this was my first attempt at homebrewing. Did a full boil (6.5 gal) and modified the hop schedule. After 4 weeks of fermentation (2 primary, 2 secondary), I bottled it and let it carb for 10 days before trying one. First bottle I opened had pretty good carb, and tasted pretty darn good. I tried a few more in the following days and they were all great! I've managed to save a case as I was on vacation, and now after 3 weeks in the bottle I'm enjoying this brew more and more. It'd definitely not as hoppy as I thought it was going to be, but it's a very drinkable beer that everyone seems to enjoy. Not bad for my first brew! (Posted on 9/2/14)
First homebrew Review by Justin

This was the first beer I brewed, and it will be in regular rotation at Casa de Justin. This beer did not last long at all once my friends all got a taste of it, I am glad I made another batch right away. (Posted on 8/26/14)
Great Beer Review by Daniel

I brewed this kit while drinking some tasty IPA. I have found as I continue to homebrew my taste has changed from boring brown ale to beer with more flavor and bitterness qualities. I took this kit and added 2 extra ounces of hops. 1 oz at 60 minutes then 3 more ounces over the course of the boil added about ever 5 minutes. The last oz was used for dry hopping after primary ferm. I fermented this beer on a whitelabs california ale yeast that had just finished an apple cider and wow, did it make it great with some fruity tones. This beer didn't last long once bottled and all the friends really enjoyed it. I wish I could replicate, but the cider was terrible... But I guess 1 bad batch of cider to lead to great beer was well worth the experiment. (Posted on 6/20/14)

Not Bad, But Not My Favorite Review by Bruce Leroy

This was my third brew. I'm used to the Michigan Craft Beer scene and love beers by Bells, Founders, etc. That being said, the Chinook taste is much different than I'm used to, but not bad. My wife and her girlfriends liked it more due to it's semi-citrus taste. If you are looking for something different, consider giving it a try. Especially if you want to please the ladies! Perfect IPA Review by Nicolas

IPA's are my favorite beer, and this is my favorite IPA. I have tried many store bought IPA's over the years and none of them come even close to this one. Do no hesitate to get this kit (Posted on 5/28/14)

I don't even like IPA's (usually)! I am a huge fan (normally) of things like Caribou Slobber, an assortment of porters, and most stouts. I brewed a batch of this for a friend, followed the kit directions perfectly, but cracked the first one tonight after only just over a week in the bottle...and WOW! This may be the perfect summer beer! It is light, crisp, has a pleasantly strong citrus aroma and mild citrus taste, light mouth feel, and crisp, clean, pleasant taste and taste. This is the best IPA I have ever had, and I can't believe I made it...on my first attempt ever at an IPA. Shared with the friend I brewed it for, and another who is a huge IPA fan, and now need to order another kit! AWESOME job Northern Brewer...once again, you guys managed to put together a kit that even someone like me can make an amazing beer with! THANK YOU! (But darn it...now I "need" to order another brew bucket and kit...:)). To anyone thinking of trying this DO IT! I have it on good authority you won't be disappointed. (Posted on 5/20/14)
This is a good beer Review by Fred

I casually mentioned to my daughter that someday I might like to try home brewing. So doesn't she get me this kit for Christmas. After assembling the bare minimum of equipment from various sources, I brewed this beer in February. Being a bit of a beer snob and this being my first brewing attempt, I was a little skeptical that a quality beer could come in a box. Followed the directions except that I left the beer in the primary for 5 weeks, then dry hopped in the primary for another 10 days. (I don't have a secondary) Then bottled and let condition for 10 days before popping my first one tonight. Wow what a surprise! Right up there with some of the better IPAs I've had. And from what I've read will only get better as it conditions longer in the bottle. My ABV was about 5.1%. Just ordered the Dead Ringer kit and definitely will be brewing Caribou Slobber in the future. (Posted on 4/6/14)
Didn't have enough... Review by Dan

Amazing IPA, all my friends could not get enough of it. It was gone before I could really enjoy it. Brews easy, very active fermentation (wyeast rocks), great hop notes (wish I put the hops in some sort of sock for dry hopping), fantastic carbonation and head on this beer. I suggest this beer for any beer lover. My father never liked IPA's and this turned him into a hop-head! (Posted on 4/5/14)
