HERE’S THE FUN PART! Every starter kit comes complete with your choice of recipe kit. Just pick one of the three classic Northern Brewer recipes below and you’ll have all the ingredients you need to take your new gear out for a test drive.

Caribou Slobber Brown Ale - Like your brews tall, dark and drinkable? Then try Caribou Slobber Brown Ale. Perfect for fans of sub- stantial craft beer, this ale is full-bodied and smooth, deliciously dark without a hint of bitterness. Guaranteed to become your new favorite session beer.

Irish Red Ale - If you’re looking for a perfectly-balanced, crowdpleasing pint, you can’t go wrong with our Irish Red Ale. There’s a reason this kit is our best-seller. Actually, three reasons: great, medium-bodied taste, rich coppery color and enticingly low aging requirements.

The Plinian Legacy- A true west-coast style Double IPA, this recipe boasts a hefty, straightforward malt bill to support a relentless barrage of hops. Waves of floral, citrus and pine crash into candied citrus and resinous, earthy flavors. A resoundingly fresh IPA flavor profile highlights each unique characteristic, featuring notes of juicy orange peel, puckering lemon and the refreshing, tropical burst of pineapple to match a bittering finish.

Off the Topper - A hurricane of hops explodes with flavors of fruity pineapple and dank piney-peach. Surprisingly drinkable for the excessive lupulin, this is an exciting starter recipe not for the faint of heart. Hazy and aromatic, bitter grapefruit and tropical nectarine crash into notes of orange and zesty citrus for a profile bursting with resinous hop character.

Perfect way to start Review by Craig

I've put 5 batches through this kit so far and all have turned out excellent. Getting ready to move up to 5 gallon batches and kegging in a few more weeks. NB, thanks to you and this kit, you've made a home brewer out of me. Cheers!

I did have a little trouble with the bottling wand. I just went over to my LHBS and picked up a spring loaded wand for a few dollars, which solved my issues. (Posted on 3/26/15)
A lot of lost volume! Review by Adam

I brewed this recipe per the instructions, with a couple of minor modifications during the fermentation stages. I used a 2 gallon fermenting bucket for primary, then racked to the 1 gallon carboy for secondary. The kit also came with a packet of Simcoe that wasn't in the contents list, and about 11 additional grams of Simply Select hops. I used these to double dry hop the recipe in secondary.

With that being said, there are a few things I'd change. First, I found this brew to be a bit too bitter for my tastes. I might back off the initial 60 minute hop addition a bit and add that amount back in at 30 minutes. Second, you will lose a good amount of volume to hop additions, so bear that in mind. I ended up losing about 20oz. That may not seem like much, but when you consider that this is only a 128oz expected yield, that's almost 16% of the total! If I were to brew this again, I'd probably either add more water in the boil or top off in the secondary to make up for the lost volume.

All in all, this is an excellent kit to start with, and the 1 gallon batch size makes for an excellent way to get your toes wet and experiment with home brewing. With a little tweaking, this beer would be stellar! (Posted on 3/25/15)
Made a believer out of me Review by Ty

This kit came to me as a recommendation on a beer group I'm in on Facebook.
My request was for "a good kit to start brewing that was good enough that the equipment wasn't going to hinder me, but not so expensive that if I don't like it, I'm not out a ton of cash."

There were 10 responses to my request in about 5 minutes, and they were all for this kit.

I ordered the kit with the Caribou Slobber.

It arrived packed better than some of the equipment we get at work (and we pay multiple tens of thousands of dollars for that stuff).

There was a great packing list (with pictures!!! That's awesome for a complete noob like me) that helped verify everything was there.

The how-to DVD did a great job telling you what to do (I would add that you should practice with the bottling wand, it took a bit of practice to get right... but I was bottling by myself... I don't recommend that).

Finding a container to sterilize the siphon, tubing, etc. in was as simple as a trip to the local Big Box retail store. I found a rectangular plastic box with a cover that also served as storage for the siphon, bottling wand, and tubing (SCORE!).

Just cracked open my first Caribou Slobber tonight.

It's hard to believe something like this came from my kitchen. :)

I highly recommend this kit to anyone looking to get into brewing.

To start I love small "gadgets", so a "mini brewery" is right up my alley. It was very hard for me to decide between the pilinean legacy, and off the topper. I went with the legacy (since I have had focal banger, but have never had "elder"), and the brew turned out fantastic! My wife said it was the best IPA she had ever had! Everything seems to be good quality, and should last a while. The only gripe i have, is I wish the fermcap-s (and possibly the newly released mini big mouth bubbler) was standard issue in these kits. My saison got really rowdy on the first night, and caused a huge mess. Word to the wise, use a blow off from the beginning with this kit on EVERY strain/brew because things can escalate VERY quickly! Thankfully I have the "booster pack" now to contain the party!

Excellent Starter Kit Review by Matthew

I'm a first time home brewer and this starter kit was perfect for somebody with little to no experience. The kit came with almost all the parts necessary to brew a small batch of beer and the instructions broke down the process very nicely. I ordered the kit with the Irish Red Ale and I think it turned out fairly well. I have already ordered 2 more recipe kits another carboy and it's safe to say I'm hooked to the process of making my own beer. (Posted on 2/11/15)

I purchased this kit as my first venture into the world of home brewing and I must say it is excellent. The recipe kit I brewed was The Plinian Legacy and it far exceeded my expectations. I've only done one batch thus far and just ordered my second batch to brew. If you are on the fence about it just go for it. The only thing i would suggest is just go for the 5 gallon kit, you will wish you have after you get a taste of it. (Posted on 1/21/15)

This was a Christmas gift from my awesome wife. I am very pleased with it. Directions for the Caribou Slobber that came with it were clear and easy. I'm currently conditioning my bottles, and have the Irish Red conditioning in the same case. Couldn't resist moving ahead with the second batch after I got a second fermentor. Everything you need is in the box. If you're waiting, don't. If you're not sure if it's worth it...get it! I'm hooked now. I'm already thinking about upscaling so I can make a 5 gallon Dunkel for a Memorial Day party we're going to. Also, start watching youtube videos on brewing. They're a huge help and highly addictive. New home brewer for life. (Posted on 1/9/15)
A good starter kit but... Review by Brad

A great idea, a great starter recipe with the DIPA Plinian. My only quibble is that some of the tubing does not create a complete seal with the siphoner. A great concept, good kit, and decent instructions. It will make a good pilot system for my established home-brew system. (Posted on 12/18/14)

I had a lot of fun brewing my first batch with this kit. Comes with everything you absolutely need for brewing. For my second batch, I went out and purchased a thermometer and hydrometer, which I would recommend. The thermometer will help you make sure you pitch in the best temperature range and the hydrometer will help you determine alcohol content and will help troubleshoot when you start experimenting more with recipes.
