Improved Product. Easy Exchange. Great Customer Service Review by Aaron

I bought the Captain Crush around late Nov 2014 and didn't get around to using it until Jan 2015. Despite applying food-grade lubricant to the bushings, the original unit had a bottom roller that wouldn't turn, and one of the top two was stubborn. I can't say for sure, but it seems like the old thumb knob adjustments for the roller spacing weren't great either. The new model features machine screws in place of the thumb knobs, better bushings, and an even more solid base. Small adjustments led to a big improvement on what was already a great design. I probably just got one of the early bad ones, which another reviewer said he experienced too.

The customer service can't be topped. Just try the chat box or a phone call to see for yourself. Real brewers answer. (Posted on 2/26/15)
Need to lubricate roller bearings to get reliable outstanding performance. Review by Will

Love the Captain Crush mill. It has a high milling rate that provides perfect crushes. Bought mine the summer of 2014 for 6-12 gallon homebrew batches. I keep the mash tight and then do a 30 minute fly sparge using Beersmith sparge volumes and mash efficiency is always (last five batches) in the high nineties with no stuck mashes. I wet mill (1 oz of water to lb of grain) to get the best grind but I don't rinse the mill now. It has its issues which rinsing will make worse. The mill's set screws rusted and bearings gummed up when I rinsed it. Per NB recommendation, I cleaned up the mill and used a dap of mineral oil on the bearing surfaces. Also sometimes have to run mill in reverse for a second prior to milling in the proper direction to get it to feed sometimes. Its taken me about ten batches to dial in the crush and how to operate the mill. That said, this mill is fantastic and makes hitting your numbers a pleasure. I got several high gravity batches using kits that were suppose to come in at 1.06 OG. Love it! (Posted on 1/29/15)

Title says it all, this mill gets the job done. From some of the reviews that I read online I was uncertain I made the right choice. But the mill was great and cleaning it was very easy. (Posted on 1/26/15)
Don't buy any other grain mill! Review by mark

I've used this mill on 5 brew days so far. I got it to replace my 2 roller mill mostly because it has such a large hopper capacity. I brew 10 and 15 gallon batches, so with my old mills I was constantly having to reload its hopper. With the Captain Crush I typically only fill it twice for a 10 gallon batch. I also wanted a mill that did a better job cracking the grain instead of turning a portion of the grain into power like all knurled roller mills do. The Captain Crush mill works extremely well at meeting both of my primary reasons for getting it. As a major bonus and probably a good enough reason to buy this over other mills alone, the Captain Crush is constructed of all non-corrosive and waterproof materials. Clean-up is quick and thorough with a garden hose. Simply spray it clean and let it air dry. You can wipe it down with a towel to prevent water spots.

One other aspect of the Captain Crush that pleased me was its milling rate. It is at least 3 times faster than a knurled roller mill. This mill is the shizzle!

I did note that some other comments here mentioned that the rollers were hard to turn and they ended up using lubricating sprays. This is totally unnecessary if the unit is properly aligned when assembled. On my first attempt at assembling the Captain Crush I did not pay close enough attention to getting a perfect alignment of the rollers and bearings, and yes it was hard to turn. After reassembling it in perfect alignment the rollers turn quite easily. (Posted on 10/28/14)
Hated it but...... Review by Robert

Ok, so I tried everything. Read the instructions, cleaned it well, set it right, and still the rollers would bind, usually right in the middle of several pounds of base malt! I was feeling pretty low after spending a butt-load of money on this thing to replace my simple (but actually working) grain mill. And then I had a thought. Food-service grade Haynes Silicone Spray. This sanitary silicone spray lube convinced the rollers that they wanted to keep turning. It imparts no odor, poisons or hydrocarbons and works like WD40 for beer-making. I now love my Captain Crush mill and take back ALL the bad things I said about it. Well built, smooth operation. Yes it is a little pricey but I now think it is worth the $$. (Posted on 10/24/14)
Customer Service Review by Michael

I did have a few issues with my Captain Crush. I couldn’t get the rollers set. I worked with the Customer Service to do some troubleshooting, to which they gave me some great advice. Long story short; NB ended up sending me a replacement after having the initial mill for almost six months, FREE OF CHARGE!! I have to say the Customer Service alone is worth it on this product if you feel the price is too high.

I’ve since received and cranked out about 50+lbs of grain through the new mill with zero issues. I’m sure my initial mill was that one-in-a-thousand that just don’t jell so well. Great product, Superb Customer Service!! (Posted on 10/20/14)
More than impressed Review by Mike@550brew

We bought this mill when it first came out. Easy to assemble and get the proper spacing correctly. We have crushed well over 200lbs of grains so far with no issues. Our largest single crush was 50lbs of grains for a single batch and not one problem. (Posted on 10/7/14)
Consistently the Best! Review by HockeyHomeBrewSki

A great all-grain brew begins with a solid, reliable crush. This mill is the easiest to adjust and is very solid. I bought a dedicated Dewalt corded drill that I leave hooked up to my mill. This mill and my Brewing Classic Styles book are awesome together. I built a 10-gallon all-grain cooler set-up this past winter and have two brews down with this mill so far. No regrets and would buy again, as it will last forever. (Posted on 6/10/14)
Solid Mill....Great Crush Review by Chris

I just received my Captain Crush a couple weeks ago and had a problem with assembly and cracked the base but NB customer support was terrific and send me a replacement out and I received it yesterday. After assembly I tried a sample crush and think this mill is winner... It is replacing my 3 year old Barley Crusher... and let me say there is NO comparison... the Captain Crush is in a different league. I was going to wait a bit to do a more in depth review, but I noticed that there is a 4 hour sale today and wanted this review to be seen by possible customers!!! At 20% off this mill is a STEAL..... IMHO.

One note on assembly... make sure to assemble the base before the hopper.... if you do the hopper first it is very "tippy" when assembling the base. Also it should be noted that the flat washers should touch the Plexiglas and the split washers go in-between the flat washer and the head of the screw. In other words the split rings should not directly contact the Plexi.

UPDATE:
I have now brewed a batch of Pale Ale using the Captain crush and I am very impressed.... The milling fast and smooth. I always mash in at 1.5qt/lb to protect from thermal heat loss during mashing and generally spend a few minutes breaking up dough balls with my mash paddle and heavy duty whisk... but this is the first time I doughed in without 1 single dough ball or clump!!! Fly sparging went off without a hitch and I hit all my numbers, I did not see any increase in efficiency with the factory default settings. I'm perfectly fine with 75% mash efficiency. I am totally in love with this mill!!! (Posted on 4/16/14)
Well built, excellent performer Review by Andrew

I purchased it when it was discounted by 20%. I was immediately impressed by the the mass of the roller assembly (over 5 kilos for the rollers/housing). It's easy to assemble, and it verges on being a monolith. The visible grain column is a nice perk.
I've run 3 all-grain batches through it, and it's awesome. The roller gaps are easy to adjust, and they stay locked in position - no slipping. I crush my wheat malt, barley and specialty malts separately (adjusting the gaps for each malt), so I'm quite pleased with the simplicity/accuracy of the adjusters. The rollers move freely. The crush quality has been fantastic - most of the hull is intact, and I can adjust the final grind to a higher level of flouring without facilitating a stuck sparge. I've only had to use half of the rice hulls that I traditionally use in my Hefeweizen recipe.
I highly recommend the Captain Crush. I'm getting an average efficiency of 85% with this mill. I've been brewing for about 18 years (17 years all-grain), and I'm quite pleased with my purchase.
