Details

Rather like a Zen archer, NB's Ryan Olson devised this recipe blindfolded and selected the ingredients by how much he liked the way they smelled. And rather like a Sith lord, Ryan devised this recipe on an Angry Day and fueled the pilot brew session with hatred, so the resultant beer trended towards the evil side of aggressive - a beefy, bronze-colored, malty but very bitter American-style IPA with a subversive Belgian influence. A supporting cast of dark base and caramel malts helps create a massive frame on which nooses of IBU-laden hops are hung. Candi sugar was chosen for its butter-toffee, demerara-like aroma, and a double-fisted infusion of Cascade and Chinook hops spiked with grains of paradise at the end of the boil is like a citrus-and-pine roundhouse kick to your poor tongue. This is not one of your cuddly, lighthearted, romantic comedy, ice cream social India pale ales. Recommended: 2-stage fermentation and yeast starter.

Not for me Review by Abe

I had no problem hitting my numbers on this while brewing. Since this was my first batch of all-grain I was surprised. The taste is definately an IPA with a very bitter taste to it. My problem was with the carbonation, but that's not the beer's fault. I would say if you like really bitter IPA's give this a try. (Posted on 9/4/12)

This was, according to all that have tasted it, the best beer that I have ever brewed. I have to concur. It is extremely smooth while having all of the hoppiness that you can handle. Definitely does not drink like a beer with 8% alcohol. I will definitely be ordering this again!!! (Posted on 6/22/12)
Great IPA Review by Mainemike68

This beer is a winner. It is a great IPA and yet it is a little different than other common IPA's that you are drinking right now. Beautiful light tangerine color that is really bitter. At first taste I thought "hmm this is actually too bitter" then I thought "What?" The hops hammer the back of your throat like a Bruce Lee 1 inch punch. Mine finished at 8.3% so after a few pints I could have taken a face punch. If you are thinking about trying this beer, just do it. 4 stars only for the price, but it is more like a double IPA so all things considered not too bad. Ages very well, was best at 3 months didn't make it to 4 months. This was the beer I looked forward to and went for first when it was at it's prime. (Posted on 5/9/12)
