Dependable Review by Timothy

I have brewed six kits using the dry yeast. They have performed well. I would have given it five stars, but it was not included in the kit, as ordered. Unfortunately, I did not realize this until I was ready to add it to the wort. I put the wort in a well sterilized carboy in the refrigerator until the yeast arrived. It fermented, but the result was not good. Lesson learned, always lay out ingredients before starting! Kit was replaced without a question...thanks. (Posted on 1/3/14)

This stuff is a beast. Works well and fast... Make sure you have the blow off tubing ready to go. This is the only yeast that I consistently need to use the blow off. This finished product is always delicious. (Posted on 12/5/13)

Dependable dry yeast that you can use for practically any English-style beer. Works equally well in English IPA or porter, with mild ester character. Difficult to screw up. (Posted on 11/22/13)

Great yeast Review by Brian

I use this yeast the most then the S-05. Both are very fast. Today is decided to try it a different way. I mixed a half tsp yeast nutrient blend in one cup of warm water stirred an pitched the yeast into it just before I started my Irish stout. In about 15 mins it was frothy. When I pitched this into my warm wort it was bubbling in 30 min. (Posted on 11/2/13)
Saved my bacon Review by Greg

After a failed fermentation start with a Wyeast package, fortunately I had a package of S-04 on hand to pitch on a one-day old, non-fermenting English Mild.

I had no idea if it would work, sprinkled it on dry. Like US-05, this Safale S-04 dry yeast was totally reliable, and it took off like a champ, even without rehydrating.

I use Safale dry yeasts all the time, they cannot be beat, even compared to higher priced liquid yeasts. This one saved my batch and not only that, my English Mild turned out fantastic.

I would absolutely use this one again for any English Ale style! (Posted on 10/28/13)

First time using this yeast. Ordered it for use with a Chocolate Milk Stout. Four hours into the primary and it was churning away! Anxious to see how this one turns out. (Posted on 10/25/13)
I won't use it again Review by William H

I've used this yeast twice now. Both times I feel it has harmed my beer. The first time I use this yeast, I tasted my beer as I was bottling. It tasted incredible. But, after carbonating and conditioning, it developed a distinct "yeasty" off taste. I chocked it up to less than ideal fermenting conditions.
However, with the latest beer I brewed with this yeast, I took great care to keep it at a constant temperature around 70 degrees, ideal for fermenting. When bottling, I thought I had figured it out, because my beer (once again) tasted amazing. One of the best I'd ever brewed as a matter of fact. However, after spending a month in the bottle, which should be plenty of time for the yeast to condition/carbonate and settle to the bottom, I tasted it and once again found a very prominent yeasty off flavor.

This yeast didn't ruin my beer. It's still pretty tasty, and it's definitely drinkable. But it took what used to be a GREAT beer, and turned it into a pretty mediocre beer. I should have followed my instincts and not used this yeast. I won't be using it again. I'd prefer a cleaner, high quality English strain like WLP005.

Three stars because it at least gets the job done without totally ruining your beer. However, if you're thinking of using this yeast because of the price point. Don't bother. S-05 is the same price and doesn't give any of the bad off flavors this one does. (Posted on 10/11/13)
Pitched porter on top of.. Review by William

Ok, two previous reviews, and in my last I said I was gonna pitch a bourbon barrel porter on top of this yeast cake. Well I did, only modified recipe to use 100 proof rum infused with 3 vanilla beans. That was 8 months ago...

Beer came out tremendous. I bottled them in 22oz bombers and have been giving them out sparingly to special people. Trying to save some for Christmas.
This yeast is a beast. (Posted on 8/23/13)

1.041 to 1.010 in three days @ 66F. I sprinkled it into the wort without rehydrating. Took a sample tonight and it's fantastic! I mean this beer will be ready to keg and drink after only a week. Don't hesitate to try this yeast. (Posted on 3/21/13)
fast vigorous fermentation Review by grant

Currently conditioning a pale ale with American hops and this English style yeast to see how it turns out, had a very fast ferment pitched at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. OG of 1.056 dropped to 1.010 after just 3days. Will certainly order again soon assuming the beer tastes good! (Posted on 1/13/13)

1.044 start to a 1.010 finish and it took 3 weeks.
the yeast has a really good maltiness when done shocked seeing that it was a lite extract beer i brewed,

Ok, I previously reported that the yeast blew off the blow off tube. Well in only a couple days fermentation of my Dry Irish Stout was complete, racked to secondary for another week and half then to my corny keg. Tried beer just before Christmas and wasn't ready, but only days later and it is spot on. From Primary to drinkablility in less than 6 weeks. Very impressed with this yeast. May never buy Guinness Pub Cans again... (Posted on 12/29/12)

Have been using liquid yeast since I started homebrewing 4 years ago. Just bought some dry to try in a stout and WOW blew off the blow off tube.... Be anxious to try this brew, and will report later, but if it is looking great.
No starter, no yeast nutrients both of which I always do. Gonna try to pitch a porter on the yeast cake. (Posted on 12/7/12)

I use this for stouts & porters. Works just as well as liquid yeasts, for half the price of liquid yeasts, and you don't have to worry about the yeast dying if you aren't home to get it in the fridge when your delivery arrives! (Posted on 12/27/11)
bomb diggity Review by bruguru

If I had only 1 yeast to brew with, it would be this one. So versitlie, you can make most american, and English beers. Fermentation, is so fast, and complete, you can make a fantastic IPA in a week.
There is no deviation in esters, or fermentation character from pack to pack, perfectly consistant results every time. If you need a beer quickly, or if a beer you have made is stuck. S-04 is the Animal that works. Will fully ferment out in 3 days at 65F. Vigorous fermentation will take place 6 hours after pitching. (Posted on 10/20/11)
