A Brew Kettle of Epic Proportions!

The 10-gallon Tall Boy® kettle is a boil kettle that will last you a lifetime. This kettle will grow with you and can easily integrate into the future All-Grain system of your dreams.

Ideal for: 5 or 6 gallon batches, but with plenty of space for Brew-In-A-Bag methods as well.

This is no repurposed stock pot. The Tall Boy® is made specifically for homebrewers. Brew scientists have determined that the ideal height to diameter ratio for a brew kettle should be 1.2:1 in order to optimize boil performance. The Tall Boy reduces evaporative losses, and less evaporative cooling means a more vigorous boil. A vigorous boil means more volatilization of off flavors, and better hop utilization. All of that means better beer. Add to that it’s 4mm thick tri-clad bottom, designed to stop bullets and prevent scorching, and you’ve got a serious brewer’s tool. The Tall Boy logo is laser etched into the surface as a subtle indication to the world that you take brewing seriously.

Dimensions:
  • Height: 16.75" without Lid; 18.75" with Lid
  • Width: 15" at Top of Kettle; 14.5" at Bottom of Kettle; 18.5" Handle to Handle
  • Inner Diameter: 13.75"

Good kettle for the $$$, concerned about the quality
Purchased the 10 gal Tall Boy a couple weeks ago and this past weekend did a test run to see how quickly I could get 7 gallons up to a boil. After doing so and letting the kettle dry out I noticed small rust spots on the inside around the perimeter, likely where the bottom is welded to the side(s). Took a soft scrubbie and Barkeeps Friend which easily removed the rust stains. Rinsed the kettle, added 1 gallon of water, brought it to a boil, drained and dried the kettle with the same result. This is a good, economically priced kettle and the construction is solid, but if it is going to continue to produce these rust spots I'm concerned about the quality of the welding and what may be leeching into the wort.

Great kettle for the money but could use some improvements
I recently used the kettle for the first time and it worked great. The handles appear to be sturdy and attached well enough to handle 10 gallons of liquid. It looks great and I'm sure will last a while.

My only concern / complaint is that after I cleaned it with PBW (oxidizer) it showed signs of rusting on the internal seam around the bottom. My thoughts are that there is a welded seam or something entraps liquid and / or oxidizer and eventually rusts. I'm debating on whether I should contact NB and return it or remove the rust and re-passivate.

Response from Northern Brewer
We are sorry to hear that you found signs of rust. In most cases, a oxalic acid based kitchen cleanser (we like Barkeeper's Friend) and a non-metal scrubbing pad (NEVER USE STEEL WOOL). Once cleaned to bare metal, it will re-passivate itself and should be rust free. We will have Customer Service contact you though, to see if we can help.

Great Upgrade for full volume boils
Excellent kettle for brewing. My boil off has decreased, and I was easily able to upgrade to full wort boils, which has increased the quality of my brews. This thing is high quality, not overly heavy, and I plan to buy again.

Great Kettle
Already used it to brew two batches of beer and love it. Great price, well made and I'm sure it will last a lifetime. Wish it had measurements on the side, but I just marked my large stirring spoon so I know how many gallons its at. Would recommend this kettle.

A must have tool for brewers of all experience levels
I picked this up just after I stepped up to five gallon batches and I havent looked back since. This pot has helped me take my beers to the next level by allowing me to boil at full volume and not have to worry about scortching my wort. Right out of the box you will be able to tell that this pot is built to last. It is constucted of a sturdy but beatiful brushed stainless steel. The handles feel very well attatched on this pot unlike some of the cheaper pots and their unique design actually double as a lid holder if you hang the lid by its handle while you dont need to use it. The price was a huge factor in my purchase of this brew kettle, there were some places selling thin flimsy stainless pots that were actually more than what this quality kettle costs. You will not be dissapointed with this brew kettle if you decide to purchase it and it really doesnt make sense to sette for anything less.

Does the job
Bought this 10 gal kettle over a year ago and find it perfectly meets my needs for brewing 5 gallon batches. Big enough to not boil over. It is sturdy and cleans easily. I was a bit surprised at how tall it is. Only complaint is I wish it had markers to measure how many gallons are in the kettle. I highly recommend it!

Great Kettle
Perfect Kettle for Full Boil 5 Gallon Batches. I have recently started all grain brewing and the Tall Boy worked out great. Definitely built strong. I expect to get many many batches from this pot.

Fantastic Pot
I was debating between this & the MegaPot, but went with this due to price. I couldn't be happier with it. This pot works great, either on the stove or on the dark star. I can brew full volume extract kits without fear of boil over. That alone is worth it for me. Also, if someone ever want to upgrade my kitchen with induction cooking, this pot would work for that. Very versatile & highly recommended.

Great Kettle
My first stainless brew kettle after years using a 7.5 gallon aluminum. What a difference. The tri clad bottom is a nice feature. The thickness all the way around is more than enough. Easy enough to drill through and add a valve. Cleanup is a snap too. I am really impressed with the quality of this kettle to brew in. If you want to save a little dough, go with this one other than the megapot, but you won't go wrong either way. I'm already planning my 2nd brew in this bad boy after just using it 2 days ago!

More of a general question, but would this size (10 gal) be suitable for 5 gal BIAB batches with high gravity/big grain bills?
T G on May 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I think it would. It would depend on how high of gravity. On my system with ~0.5gal of "dead space" I can get a 15# grain bill in there (just barely) that gets up to ~1.080 gravity. I usually dont go for the high gravity stuff though. If you routinely do barleywines or Imperial IPAs then you might want to bump up to the 15gal. You could always drop the batch size to a 4 or 4.5 gal and increase your top end gravity wise.
Cheers!
Will the 10 gallon blichmann false bottom work in this pot ?
A shopper on Feb 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, the Blichmann False Bottoms are designed for their kettles, and they rest on a "lip" on the edge of the base of the kettle. The same false bottom would not work in a Megapot or TallBoy kettle. The domed Titan False Bottoms are really the best way to go for our drilled kettles. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Hi all, could someone please verify the diameter of this kettle? I have had mine for over a year now and have always been off on my brewing numbers using this pot. I entered the dimensions of 13.3" diameter into Beersmith's equipment tool and always had been off on efficiency's. Before my last brew 2 weeks ago I physically measured the bottom of my kettle and it was 14" diameter! This changed the volumes of water I was measuring going into the kettle for a BIAB brew quite a bit. After I edited my diameter settings and calculated the correct volume of water to start with I was spot on with my numbers.

If someone else could physically verify the diameter and post them here, it might help people going forward with their full volume mashes.

Thanks.

Does it have volume marks inside?
Denis B on Feb 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! The Tall Boy kettles do not have volume marks on the inside. I hope that this helps, let me know if you have any further questions!
Any suggestions on putting volume marks inside?
M C on Jul 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We're not aware of any good way for a consumer to add the markings on to the kettle, really. If they were scratched in, it could cause it to corrode at those spots. A person could take a long-handled spoon and make marks on it that correspond to the gallon levels in the kettle, and stick the spoon in to check the level in the liquid measure, but apart from that, we don't know of a good method. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
One of the reviewers reports that you can't add any weldless fittings. Is that true? I'd like to add a valve and heat element to mine.
G L on Mar 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: All you have to do it drill a 7/8" hole to install a weldless fitting. I bought the EZ Clean Kettle Valve Kit with Barb, drilled the hole with a hand drill and carbide tipped hole-cutter, works perfectly.
What are the exact external dimensions? I want to know if it will fit in my ice chest that I use to hold mash temperatures.
External Diameter? Height?
Handle width and extent?
B U on Jul 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This kettle is 13.3 inches in diameter, and 16 inches tall. The handles stick out about 2.5 inches on each side. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Is this kettle stainless steel or Aluminum?
C A on Mar 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This is a stainless-steel kettle, with a 3-layer base of stainless steel/aluminum/stainless steel. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Is this pot induction cooktop compatible?
J O on Jan 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The tall boy and megapots are both induction capable. Cheers!
What is the diameter of the bottom of the pot? I know many of times the width measurement includes the rim or even sometimes the handles. I need a pot with no more than 10 3/4" diameter to fit within the ring of my bayou classic cooker.
Rick B on Jan 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The diameter of the bottom-most surface of the outside of the pot (the part that would touch a table if placed on one) is 13?. The sides of the kettle extend an additional 1/2? on either side, giving a total diameter of 14? when measuring from the outside of the pot on either side. This doesn?t include the rim at the top or the handles.
Can this be used as a mash tun for 5 gallon batches?
H P on Jan 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Hayden,

Sure, but you would probably want to drill a hole in it and add a ball valve. Otherwise it would be tricky!

Cheers,

Charles
Will this work on induction?
