Smashing Pumpkin!
I easily followed Northern Brewer's directions to include 6 row malt and canned organic pumpkin. It's currently fermenting and will be bottled soon. It should be ready in time for Thanksgiving!

Not a pumpkin I would repeat
This is my only second brew ever but this did not have the flavor I like in a pumpkin beer this was very bland in my mind.

Will brew this again next fall
I made a small batch of this just in time for Halloween/Thanksgiving, and really enjoyed it. Also got rave reviews from my beer-loving friends!

Tastes great; flat carbonation
I brewed this with organic canned pumpkin and was very pleased with the result, EXCEPT for the carbonation. I had to wrestle the fizz drops into the bottles; they were slightly larger than my 16 oz bottle opening. Further, they did not perform and left my brew barely carbonated with an embarrassing head.

I've read other reviews that had similar results with the fizz drops. I recommend making the fizz drops and option on the 1 gallon kits.

Best ever
Brewed this about 3 weeks ago. Added a tablespoon of honey with 5 minutes left in the boil. When I bottled it, my daughter said it's the best one I've ever done. Can't wait to taste the final product.

Very Refreshing
This was my second brew and it turned out awesome. 2 weeks fermenting and 2 weeks carbonating. I had my first sip and wasn't impressed, but then I let it sit for about 10-15 minutes in the fridge before finishing it. That really brought out a smooth and sweet barley flavor. I'm going to buy 5 gallon extract kit and add real pumpkin.

Really Good
I brewed this about 8 months ago and it turned out pretty good. Just this past weekend I found two 16 oz. bottles of this sitting in the back of my fridge. They must have been there for at least 5 months maybe longer. I popped one open and it poured crystal clear with a nice head. It tasted amazing! Probably in my top 5 for pumpkin spice beers. The extra long conditioning time really made a difference in this case. I know it's hard to wait that long, but man, what a difference it made!

Pretty tasty
Easy to make and delicious. I enjoyed adding in some specialty grains for a little chocolate flavor.

Great!
Better than most pumpkin ale's I've had. I used about 85% of the small can of pumpkin. I also used a 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin spice at the beginning of the boil and another 1/4 teaspoon of pumpkin spice at flame out. Turned out great.

What is the estimated ABV?

is this an all grain or extract kit?
S C on Jan 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello Travis,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! That kit is an extract recipe. All of our 1 gallon/small batch kits are extract kits. I hope that this helps!
Do I need priming sugar for this recipe?
A shopper on Dec 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: the kit comes with fizz drops, so no additional sugar is required.
Would smashing pumpkin be considered an American Ale? I'm going to enter my first batch in a home brewer competition. THANKS!!!!!!!!
I C on Oct 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: American Ales (AKA American Pale Ales) have a characteristic moderate to strong hop aroma that I wouldn't say is present in this recipe. This would be a Spiced Amber Ale. Cheers, and have fun brewing!
i dont see a drop down for yeast selection. Is it included?
Ryan Bender on Feb 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, all kits that I have ordered (including the smashing pumpkin) have come with dry yeast and recommended use instructions.
should I buy crushed 6 row or whole for this?
A shopper on Jan 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is really a "when will you use it" question. For the pumpkin ale recipe, you need it crushed. If you plan on getting it and using it right away - get crushed. Otherwise, if you plan on storing it for a while, get it whole.
I noticed that this recipe calls for adding 1lb of 6-Row if I'm planning on adding pumpkin. Could I substitute the 6-Row and do 1lb of Munich instead?
Jason H on Jul 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The 6-row is added as it has a high amount of Amalayse enzyme to help break down the starches in the pumpkin. Munich malt does not have the same amount of enzyme. I would not recommend substituting.
Do the kits come with yeast included or do I need to buy it separately?
P E on Jun 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Pete,

Thank you for your question! On each kit page there is a yeast drop down menu we you can choose which yeast option you'd like or to decline yeast all together.

Cheers!
is this an all grain or extract kit?
S C on Jan 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello Travis,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! This is an extract kit, all of the 1 gallon kits are extract. I hope that this helps!
to make a two gallon batch can i just buy 2 1 gallon kits and follow the recipe instructions on the 1 gallon kit
Joseph S on Oct 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: yes. I dont see why not. as long as you use enough water.
how much better is it with real pumpkin?
A shopper on Sep 29, 2017
Hi,
We would like to add real pumpkin to this recipe and so we also need to purchase additional pale 6 row malt. When we do the statistical estimations, it shows the abv increase with the addition of the pumpkin and pale 6 row which makes sense because it's more sugar in the wort. Initially we thought about adding 1 lb of each. However if we would to add 2 lbs of each pumpkin and pale 6 row the abv goes up even higher. We definitely want to get that pumpkin taste but do not want to add so much sugar as to overwork the yeast during fermentation. What is the best option? Thanks!!
