Brewed three 1-gallon batches so far, here's my take...
I am brand, spanking new to homebrewing and this is my first stab at it. So far I have brewed three 1-gallon batches with this kit. While there are plenty of reviews that detail what's great about it, I am actually going to list what needs improvement:1. The hose that connects to the top of the auto-siphon tends to slip off when it is wet, which it will be, due to be soaked in sanitizer. If I push the hose far enough onto the siphon tube until it stops where the tube curves, it might not slip off, but at the point, I can see tiny air bubbles slip into the hose thereby adding air/oxygen to the brew as it is bottled. Not good. I have to put a clothespin or zip-tie onto the hose while bottling to keep it from sliding off.2. The aforementioned hose is also a little too short. Could stand to be 6-12" longer. When I bottle, I place the 1-gallon jug (fermenter) on the kitchen countertop and then place the empty bottles in the bottom rack slid out of my open dishwasher. Using this method, the bottles are held up by the spines of the dishwasher rack and any spillage is easily captured by the inside of the open dishwasher door. But the hose is a little too short to do this, so I am forced to use the top rack of the dishwasher. Because of this, there isn't sufficient gravity to keep the beer flowing into the bottles. I have to repeatedly kick-start the siphon.3. On the third batch, the brew kettle (stock pot) began leaking where one of the lower handle rivets are attached. When I brew a 1-gallon batch, I use 1.5 gallons of water to compensate for boil-off, etc. When the pot begins to boil, it begins to bleed wort through that lower rivet and therefore makes quite a mess on the stovetop. That said, the included 2-gallon stock pot should probably be a 3-gallon one to allow more head space.4. The white plastic cap for the blow-off tube worries me because the seal might not be tight enough. This should probably be a rubber bung instead. I've only used the cap + blow-off tube once for the smashing pumpkin ale as it has such an initial vigorous fermentation, that it filled the 3-piece airlock with thick orange foam. 5. While the Product Details doesn't list it, the kit does come with the sugar fermentation drops as shown in the photo. The problem with these are that once they get wet, the will fuse together into one huge clump that's difficult to pry apart. So what I do now is place them into a clean, sanitized, dish/plate where each drop is far apart from the others. That way, when I grab each one with a wet glove (wet from being dipped into StarSan) the others aren't getting wet. Perhaps priming sugar would be better for this kit?6. If you have any extra bottle caps still sitting in sanitizer after you bottle, be sure to rinse them and dry them well right away. Do not allow them to air dry, otherwise they can rust.

Response from Northern Brewer
This review is being posted. However

reviews get cut off after about a paragraph or so...so this might look weird. We could take it down if you wanted to abridge the review to be shorter. Check it out on the site. Let us know if we can help in anyway! Cheers! James J.

Great little package for good price
I just got my kit and its very nice, though i had to knock off a couple stars because it does lack VITAL pieces of brewing equipment i didn't notice were not included. Mainly any type of thermometers. You know the things necessary for maintaining proper temp during the brewing and fermentation process to ensure proper flavor and cost pennies to put in the kit. and then some minor gripes that would have been nice to see in the kit but not necessary and i recommend you order at the same time would include, hydrometer , bottle brush, cleaning solution (not the same as the included sanitizer, s-type airlock (personally hate the 3 piece, they may be easier to clean but they are so finicky)

Love the 1 Gallon Small Batch Starter
This is my first foray into home brewing, so I bought a 1 Gallon Small Batch Started kit. Just made my first batch yesterday and it turned out exactly as they showed it in to video. Can't wait to bottle it and drink it. One month remains!

Best Place to start! (Caribou Slobber Kit)
I was given the 5 gallon Big Mouth Bubbler starter kit and as a new brewer it is a bit overkill for practice. To ruin a batch of 5 gallons would be detrimental to the brewbie confidence so the One Gallon Kit is great!
Very managable process, straightforward and simple. Stove top capable and time isn't so much of an issue. Brew day went smooth and quickly, fermentation was/is completing as I type and the beer is lokking happier and happier each day! Thank you Northern Brewer for bringing one more anxious brewer to the bottle with simple and easy to follow starter kits!

Love the Caribou Slobber and Irish Red!
This kit is great and is perfect for my small apartment setting! I've brewed both the Caribou Slobber and the Irish Red recipes. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow for a person like me that knew nothing about home brewing. The only problem is that brewing these small batches just makes me want to brew more! So now I'm upgrading to 5 gallon batches with big mouth bubblers, but I'll probably use the 1 gallon kit on the side and to introduce my buddies to home brewing as well.

Cheap quality stuff
I like the offer when I submit to start my beer brewing hobby at home with 1 Gal just for fun. When I use the equipment, felt it's cheap like siphon, or bottle caps, or bottle cap sealer (worst), I have lost almost 60% of caps just because of the sealer not able to get it in position. I would have ordered these separate or bought local.

1 Gallon Small Batch Home Beer Brewing Kit
Go Pro™ Small Batch Beer Brewing Kit old
Go Pro™ Small Batch Beer Brewing Kit old
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,

Does this kit come with a hydrometer? If not should I invest in one to check specific gravity and ABV?
brian o on Dec 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It doesn't come with one and you should use one.
how long is the brewing process ?
A shopper on Dec 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 3-4 hours for all grain. Plan a little longer for your first brew day.

Bare minimum is around 3. Generally accepted times are 60 minutes for the mash (steeping your grains in hot water), 60-90 minutes for the boil. Plan in time to heat your water and cool down the wort and you're right at 3-3.5 hours. Might be a little quicker if you do only extract or partial mash, but I'm not sure. I only do all grain.
Is the fermentor plastic or glass?
S P on Nov 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is a one gallon glass carafe
How many bottles does the 1-gallon starter kit make?
A shopper on May 1, 2017

J O on Feb 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it comes with tablets to drop in each bottle before capping.
Hello! I'm planning on buying this kit for my boyfriend, but I'm completely lost on what recipe to get him. He usually loves IPAs (his favorite beer is Two Hearted Ale). Are any of those close to that?
Otherwise, what is a good starter recipe?
M R on Feb 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Any of the starter kit recipes will be great and easy to fallow. My first brewing experience was a 1 gallon caribou slobber kit and it was fantastic. Everything you need is included and instructions are easy to fallow. The "off the topper" IPA sounds like a good fit for you, but I can't speak from experience as I've never tried it. However, Northern Brewer is a great resource and a call to them should clear up any questions you might have!
Do you bottle with the mini siphon attached directly to the bottling wand?
S M on Nov 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You do bottle using the auto-siphon

foot siphon tubing that is included goes between the auto-siphon to the bottle filler during bottling.
Is the gallon jug glass or plastic?
C H on Oct 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Glass. It's a nice starter kit.
What is the shipping weight of 1 Gallon Small Batch Starter Kit? Just wondering as I live overseas and am planning to use a shipping forwarding service that ships to my current country of residence.
L A on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The shipping weight is around 8 pounds, but I never use air freight or air shipping I use Maritime Shipping because is a lot cheaper, and you pay per cubic feet not per pound. I hope this humble comment will help you
Okay, lets say I buy this starter kit and use the recipe provided. Can I use the same starter kit with a different recipe for the second time I use it?
A shopper on Jun 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can. As long as you keep the equipment clean, this kit has all of the supplies that you need to to brew 1 gallon batches. I've had the supplies I received with this kit for a couple years and they still work great :)
Are bottles included? I don't see a list of items
A shopper on Jan 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No they were not, but everything else was and the Irish Red Ale Kit we made came out great!
Will a 7qt pot work, or does it need to be 2 gallons?
A shopper on Dec 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I use a 7 qt pot, and yes, the boil over is a pain...really need to pay attention. I plan to get a 2 gallon kettle.
I will need to travel with this on an airplane. Can you tell me the outer dimensions of this kit so I can determine whether it will fit in my luggage? Thanks!
L I on Jul 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't know the dimensions. you may want to have it shipped directly to your destination, if this is possible.
If I get this kit for ipas can I get different ingredients for like wheat ales and still use this kit? (I'm looking for a starter kit)(nooby)
S T on Jun 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, with the equipment in the Small Batch Starter Kit, you could brew any of the one-gallon beer kits we offer. There are endless recipe possibilities that could be brewed up with the same equipment set. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Noob question, sorry - Will a 1" standard blowoff hose fit inside of the cap of the fermentor in this kit?
N I on May 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No worries, a regular sized blow off tube will not fit. This kit does include a smaller one that works with the 1 gallons jugs and drilled screw cap.
Can I use a large 1-gallon growler to bottle my beer instead of individual bottles?
M R on Feb 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's usually not a good idea. The carbonation would probably not be quite right, and after opening it, the carbonation would be leaving the rest of the beer. There would also be a fair amount of sediment in the growler. It's easy to pour a single beer and leave behind the sediment from the bottle-conditioning; but with a larger vessel, you're pouring several beers and the sediment and yeast would likely get stirred back up into the beer as the jug was repeatedly tipped to pour from it. It's better to use standard bottles to have consistent carbonation, and cleaner pours. 22 oz, or 32 oz are as big as I would go if bottle-conditioning the beer. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Hi there!
I'm planning on getting this kit for my boyfriend. I have no idea about brewing I'm wondering if there are any equipment/accessories that are not included in this that are necessary...for example I've read that some of these kits don't include a digital thermometer and a hydrometer. Is that needed for this? I'm planning on getting the Irish Red Ale. He is picky with IPAs, so i figured he can choose one if he wants to once he gets this. Also I've seen a recipe book for beers...is that a good idea for this? Appreciate all the help! Thank you!
William D on Jan 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The kit is a perfect starter kit. I started with this kit and my love for brewing has grown. The hydrometer isn't quite necessary for starting out here with the one gallon batch. A thermometer could be useful, but when starting it is not 100% necessary. You won't need the recipe book for this kit, if that's what you mean. This kit gives step by step instructions and all the ingredients. It could be something useful down the road though if he continues brewing, and grows his batch size.
Is this hard to do?
M E on Dec 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I just started this tonight. I have never brewed beer before and so far it has been very easy. Everything is included in the kit except for sanitizer which you will definitely need. Read the directions before you start. The total boiling process is 45 minutes after the 10 minute steeping of grains. Ice bath until cooled down and then siphon in the glass jug included. Now I wait!
Hello! I am looking to purchase a kit for my husband, and I know nothing about brewing :) . Do you recommend the 1 gallon small batch starter kit? Can the kit be reused with additional small batch recipe kits? If so, are there any additional supplies/ingredients needed? Thanks for your help!
A S on Dec 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It's a great starter kit, it has the bare essentials and uses some "shortcuts" that are a nice way to get your feet wet with brewing. Note that you'll need to purchase a dozen bottles in addition to this kit so you have some vessels for fermenting and storing the beer once it's made. I would suggest purchasing them instead of using recycled bottles as they are affordable, reusable, and hold up to higher pressure standards than most commercial recycled bottles. A nice to have is a "bottling bucket" in addition to this kit to really complete it in my opinion, but not a necessity. Lastly, this kit can be used again and again by purchasing more ingredients or recipe kits at a later date.
is this reusable? Can you make more than one batch after the first?
T K on Dec 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but you will have to buy more ingredients which will include malt extract, specialty grains, hops, yeast, and priming sugar. Northern Brewer even sells lots of 1 gallon ingredient kits!
I'm looking to get this for my bf for Christmas. Which recipe would be closest to the beers in the US? I know he will love to experiment with others but for his first batch I'd like to get something I know he already enjoys.
A M on Dec 1, 2015

There's a variety of kits that come with it! Which American styles does he like? The American Wheat is probably your best bet.

Considering this as a gift but have not idea as to which flavor kit to get. Suggestions?
D C on Nov 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'd start with something easy like the Caribou Slobber. It's not only an easy recipe to follow but produces an excellent brown that's not heavy with round roasted malt tones and a nice light hop finish.
Does the kettle HAVE to be stainless? I have a 2 gallon that isn't stainless steel.
M K on Nov 30, 2015

non-stainless steel pots will work as well.
Ca I use 22 oz bottles instead?
S T on Nov 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the only difference will be if you use the fizz drops it will tell you to add 2 instead of 1 at bottling time.
Does the "Off The Topper" kit come with fizz drops? Or do I have to buy them separately?
Q U on Nov 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hello there

The off the topper kit comes with a choice of granular priming sugar or fizz drops. You make that choice in the drop down tab

when you place the order. Just like you use to choose your yeast.
Is this an all grain kit?
A R on Oct 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Our 1 gallon small batch beer recipe kits are all extract and extract with specialty grains as of this writing. We do not have any 1 gallon All Grain.

Gabe from NB
Instead of capping with bottles how could I do this with a 64OZ Growler?
R P on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Growlers are not rated for the same pressure as smaller bottles. While you could put the beer in a growler

prime with multiple drops

and cap it

it may run the risk of exploding. 32 oz bottles seem to be the largest bottle that can hold the pressure reliably and this would call for 4-5 fizz drops per bottle.
Can you use this equipment to make kombucha with your specialty kits?
A shopper on Apr 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I wouldn't recommend it. Kombucha requires a larger opening for removing the SCOBY and a method of letting air in and out.
Are the ingredients that come with the kit kosher?
A shopper on Feb 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi there,
Our kits are not certified kosher. Cheers!
