Why choose brown glass bottles?

The beer bottle glass color you choose for your homebrew will greatly impact its taste. Dark amber or brown glass greatly reduces UV light from spoiling the beer. Sure, any colored glass beer bottles filter out both visible and ultraviolet light. Brown glass blocks out more light than green, making it the optimal choice for bottling homebrew. Dark beers also absorb more light than light beers, making it essential to store stouts, bocks, and the like in brown bottles, while lighter beers can be stored in green bottles.

Since, clear glass beer bottles don't block any light, they are the least desirable choice for long term beer storage, with the exception of any specific beverage whose color was the primary characteristic you were trying to stress, such as a red ale.

I love these bottles!
Review title says it all. These bottles are easy to clean, sturdy and keep a very tight seal. I have used them for 3 batches of beer and the seals work just as well as they did the first time they were closed. Need to get more of them!!

Easy to use.
Classy look. nice bottle. Easy to use. Don't have to mess with bottle caps and caper. Thinking clear bottle next time to make it easy to see when to stop pouring before the sediment.

Perfect ??
These are awesome. Easy to wash; just throw in the dishwasher. Easy to change lids if one gets rusty. I have yet to have any part of the lid leak or crack or go bad on me and I've been using them for over a year and I use mine constantly. Perfect for kombucha.

Easy & best size for a beer.
These sure beat capping 12 ounce bottles. More sure closure and nothing to dispose of after opening. Besides a pint (or 1/2 liter) is great for all but the heaviest brews. For those: share or close & drink the rest later.

Bottles work great. Once capped bottles don't fit back into the same box

Bottles great.. Box sucks

I have bought these 3 times.
I keg my beer. In the winter, I prefer to brew in the kitchen. When I do so, I make small batches (2.5 gallon), and when I fill the 2.5 gallon keg, I fill two bottles, and drop-in a fizz-bang. When the keg goes dry before I am ready with a new keg, I always have a war chest of swing top pints in the basement.

Made in China
I posted the question as to where these bottles were made before ordering, and was told that they were made in Canada. Nope. Box just came, and they were made in China.I have had problems with the Chinese made bottles being of inconsistent quality, some are weak and can not hold the normal bottling pressures of beer. No way to know which are the bad ones, until they explode/break with a shower of beer. What do I do with an expensive case of bottles not useful for bottling beer?

Do I store the clean empty bottle open or closed? Will it effect the seal one way over the other?
A shopper on Jun 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I leave them open so they will dry out. Any time you seal something wet I worry about something growing. Even clean bottles I run through dishwasher without soap before bottling and have never had a problem.
can these be used for bottle conditioning after primary fermentation?
G A on Feb 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, use them exactly the way you would if you were capping a regular bottle
How wide is the base at the bottom?
A shopper on Nov 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's just over three inches in diameter at the widest part of the base. Like 3 1/32.
If you carbonate with 1 Fizz Drop for a 12 ounce bottle, what do you do for the 16 oz bottle?
A shopper on Sep 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would not put any extra "fizz drops" into a 16 oz bottle. 1 should be suffice for 12 or 16 oz.
How tall are these bottles? Are they the same height as a standard 12 ounce bottle?
Ford S on Dec 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Closed they are 9 3/8".
Open they are 8 7/8".
I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this because most threads tend to stray off topic. When filling the 16 oz bottles, as opposed to the 12 oz, do you need to leave more, less or the same head space for proper carbonation? Will the bottle filler leave enough space by default as it does in the 12 oz bottles?
S P on Dec 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Hello Spectre 2,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! You can leave the same amount of head space, the amount of head space will be approximately the same using the bottle filler with 16 oz as with 12 oz. There might be a 1 mm-1cm difference but overall negligible. I hope that this helps, have a great day!
where are these bottles manufactured? are they from recycled glass?
K A on Dec 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Why is NB asking me to tell you? They buy the product and they should know who they are buying from what it is made from. Not the retail customer.
Funny - 2+ weeks ago I asked them a question and they never answered me. Makes me wonder what kind of operation they run there. I am not a happy customer, at this point, as you can tell.
are the white tops plastic or porcelain ?
can the rubber seal be replaced?
M A on Dec 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The white tops are plastic and the red rubber seal can be replaced. The red rubber seal seams to be pretty tough though and would not need to be replaced for years. These bottles work great for me and keep in the carbonation perfectly.
Will these also accept a standard crown-cap as it appears they do in the picture?
A S on Sep 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes

if needed these can take a standard 26mm crown cap as well.
