Product Details

2000 ml borosilicate glass flask makes an excellent all-around yeast starter vessel. Takes a #10 stopper or 46-50 mm foam stopper - for optimum fit, especially when propagating yeast, we highly recommend using a foam stopper.

Works great!
When making our yeast starters, the boiling starter wort is poured directly into this flask and the temperature shock has not affected the flask. The flask sits flat on our stir plate and has a fairly smooth inner floor for the magnet to spin without rattling. If using a stir plate you want to have a flask that has a flat bottom.

Measured 1800ml
I wish I would have known it was measured to 1800. Really can't do a 2 liter starter in it. On the plus side a 1800 liter stater fits fine.

Great for your beer lab!
These flasks are all you could ask for. There are some cheaper ones out there but beware! The cheap ones do not have a flat bottom and tour magnet will go flying and you will lose your stir. This is of course bad for the yeast starter you are planning to use. These are Pyrex style glass (Borosilicate) so you can hear them on the stove without worry too. Well worth the investment.

High velocity magnet meets flask!
The flask was good quality and as always shipping was prompt. However, I built my own stir plate using an old computer fan. I had the flask sitting next to my test bench when I turned on the fan. The magnets that I had "mounted" to the top of the fan flew off and smashed into my flask. Lets just say I had to replace the flask.

Worst flask I have ever purchased.
The quality of this item has gone down hill. I had puchesed a 2L flask from NB/Midwest a number of years ago and it lasted until I dropped something on it and cracked it. So I purchased a two new ones from St. Paul NB retail. For starters, it contains about 1/2 the glass, I still had my other one and the weight difference is easy to notice. Second, my original flask could hold about 2500 mL like any 2L flask should. The new one? 1800 mL is the top marking, and I can only assume that 2 L is filled to the brim. Impossible to boil a full 2 L like my old flask. The first flask broke after the 3 use, funny thing was it was sitting on my lab grade stir plate, after I boiled in it, and I heard it crack after about 5 minutes. The crack is on the side, not the bottom. I am glad I heard it, as about 2 minutes latter when I had it in the sink a silver dollar sized chunk of glass fell out and the starter ran out. So I was out my yeast, starter, and the cheap flask. Lesson learned I guess. I am afraid to heat in the second flask as it has numerous air bubbles in the glass base where you would heat it. Off to Amazon I go, at least you have genuine Pyrex brand flasks for cheaper.

I just bought this and already regret it. For starters, this is supposedly a 2,000 ml flask - that's what's stamped on the side of the flask, that's what it's marketed as, and that's what I paid for. But the markings on this latest batch only go up to 1800? Seriuosly? This makes no sense at all. So I am supposed to just guess where 2000 is? Ok then. That brings us to the next problem. At my guestimate of 2000 ml, there's basically no headspace - much less than my previous flask, which sadly broke. I was already blowing the stopper on that one, so I know that's in the future for this thing as well. At anything above the 1800 ml line, there's just not enough space for aeration and krausen, so for me, this is an 1800 ml flask. My last issue with this is the quality. This things extremely lightweight. At 405 grams, this thing is even lighter than a pint glass, at 419 grams. Made in India is stamped on the side. I don't have high hopes for this thing, so I am already planning my next purchase. Bottom line - Do yourself a favor and find a quality flask - with the correct markings, adequate headspace, and quality construction. This thing is not the answer.

Three stars because it DOES work, however...The other reviews are right on the money - this thing is EXTREMELY fragile!!! ...just busted mine after a VERY mild bump in the sink while cleaning it. If you treat it like a crystal champaign glass, you should be alright. ...for a while.

update to review
This is a basic flask. Use with extreme care, the glass is very thin and fragile. I did manage to find lab grade Pyrex flasks that are much tougher and I have heated them on the stove directly without any breakage. I have not encountered 'bump' breakage with Pyrex either. This flask will work for you if you are very careful with it.
