2000 ml borosilicate glass flask makes an excellent all-around yeast starter vessel. Takes a #10 stopper or 46-50 mm foam stopper - for optimum fit, especially when propagating yeast, we highly recommend using a foam stopper.

Worst flask I have ever purchased.
The quality of this item has gone down hill. I had puchesed a 2L flask from NB/Midwest a number of years ago and it lasted until I dropped something on it and cracked it. So I purchased a two new ones from St. Paul NB retail. For starters, it contains about 1/2 the glass, I still had my other one and the weight difference is easy to notice. Second, my original flask could hold about 2500 mL like any 2L flask should. The new one? 1800 mL is the top marking, and I can only assume that 2 L is filled to the brim. Impossible to boil a full 2 L like my old flask. The first flask broke after the 3 use, funny thing was it was sitting on my lab grade stir plate, after I boiled in it, and I heard it crack after about 5 minutes. The crack is on the side, not the bottom. I am glad I heard it, as about 2 minutes latter when I had it in the sink a silver dollar sized chunk of glass fell out and the starter ran out. So I was out my yeast, starter, and the cheap flask. Lesson learned I guess. I am afraid to heat in the second flask as it has numerous air bubbles in the glass base where you would heat it. Off to Amazon I go, at least you have genuine Pyrex brand flasks for cheaper.

Northern Brewer
internet search facts
1 - Borosilicate glass = Pyrex2 - Pyrex glass cannot withstand the intensity of direct heat, such as a range or a broiler.3 - all glass is susceptible to thermal cooling shock (rapid cooling, for example, dunking in cold water while hot) and may crack.Courtesy of http://www.cookingforengineers.com/article/99/Microwave-Safe-Containers4 - It is the error of northern brewer that says you can cook with this directly on the burner and then dunk in freezing water. Stop doing this, and your flasks will not crack so easily. Use diffuse heat or a boiling water bath . Then allow to cool to room temp (overnight for the impatient) Thankyou, reviewers who follow this method should have much better luck.

Used once,
Used only once. While making the second starter, dinked flask on the edge of the sink, star san came flowing out. Also, made in India? By United Carbide? KHARMA MAN.

Never put it on a burner; I used this twice and the second time it cracked while sanitising.

Great flask for starters
This flask feels fragile, and may be, but with careful handling so far this has been a terrific purchase. Easy to work with and clean.

One big flask
This is one big frigin' flask made me laugh when I saw it, but what you want for your high gravity beers. Well made and hefty, even though it makes you think of Frankenstein.

Worked great for two yeast starters so far, would recommend!

Great for your beer lab!
These flasks are all you could ask for. There are some cheaper ones out there but beware! The cheap ones do not have a flat bottom and tour magnet will go flying and you will lose your stir. This is of course bad for the yeast starter you are planning to use. These are Pyrex style glass (Borosilicate) so you can hear them on the stove without worry too. Well worth the investment.

No problems yet
After many starters, and cleanings, I've had no problems yet. If I do screw up and brake it, I'll just buy another. Maybe mine is a different model than the ones that others have had trouble with. This is a FB-500-2000. I have not been easy with. I treat it like I'm trying to kill it. I do wish I'd bought about 4 or 5 extra stoppers when I bought it. Big starters "blow off " and the foam stopper does not clean very well when full of yeast.

Do these flasks have a flat bottom? No concave?
M A on Nov 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I broke my flask before I got to use it but I remember that it wasn't completely flat but it wasn't concave like the bottom of a soda can. It was more like the bottom of a coke bottle. Near the sides the glass came up but then leveled off. Hope this helps.
