Improved Brews With Depth Charge
Used my new Depth Charge for the first time in my last brew secondary dry hop. Worked as promised and really improved the hop flavor and nose in my house IPA.
I've currently got a NB Pliney clone in my primary and expect to put this through its paces again for the two dry hoppings called for and expect similar results....
I also found I lost a lot less brew using the depth charge vs. using muslin bags along with it generally being a more efficient process. Both of which are certainly value added.

Depth Charge is GREAT
The Depth Charge is a great accessory for the Big Mouth Bubbler. Using at the moment with a new 5-gallon ported Bubbler for dry hopping the Kama Citra. The Depth Charge is awesome, and I wish I would have purchased this sooner. I do have a problem with 5-gallon ported bubbler - looks like there was a problem with the plastic mold when it was formed, and the bottom of the unit has a hole almost all the way through the plastic. Will need to be replaced, but I'm sure the fine folks at NB will take care of it for me. Really Happy with the Depth Charge though - will be using it for many years. Depth Charge worked great for filtering wort into the Bubbler as well at "Learn to Brew Day" for our club. The other members were quite impressed.

Love it
Love the depth charge. Great to dry hopping beer and for adding fresh fruit to cider. My wife and all of her friends love the cherry cider that I make.
It makes the fermentation stage very ease to include racking. No more worries of sucking cherries into the secondary.
FIVE stars....

Nifty tool
It's a very cool design -- it swaps effortlessly out for the normal lid on the Big Mouth Bubbler, letting you prepare your hops and additives in advance, and it's easy to clean and sanitize.

Construction is a little flimsy -- mine was dented in a couple places upon arrival. It doesn't impact the functionality, but it does remind you that the material isn't high end. I wonder how long it will hold up?

One small problem I had: if you're doing a secondary and filling up the whole canister with additives, a significant portion won't be submerged in your beer. In my picture here, I have about 1.5 pounds of toasted coconut in the Depth Charge, filling it completely. But with my five gallon batch in my 6.5 gallon carboy, a third or so of the canister isn't touching the beer. I'm a bit worried about the coconut molding, but hopefully there won't be enough oxygen for that.

So, seems GREAT for dry hopping and small additions, but a little problematic for big additions unless you rack to a smaller Big Mouth Bubbler.

Still, I'd recommend it for most purposes!
Empty headspace with unsubmerged coconut.

Great addition to your brewing tools
I just used this for the first time yesterday. However I didn't use it for it's intended purpose. I used it in the primary so that I could pour the wort and screen out the hops. This was fantastic it only took seconds to pour the wort instead of trying to pour through a screen in the funnel which continually needs cleaning. I'm looking forward to using this for dry hopping.

Disappointed with BMB Depth Charge
Use the Big Mouth Bubbler Depth Charge once. It would not stay seated in my Big Mouth Bubbler. I tried to research it several times and it kept popping out of the neck. I finally gave up and took it off and used the original top and screw on collar. I don't know if it because it's an older version of the BMB or what. I'll try it again with one of the new BMB's I just purchased hopefully with better results.

Best solution for dry hopping
I used my Depth Charge(TM) in my recent DIPA recipe and racked straight into a keg. I've never had a clearer IPA. This was certainly worth the money!

Great trub trap!
I recently used the depth charge as a filter going from boil to fermenter. Worked great to keep all the trub out.

Does this fit in the 5 gallon siphonless Big Mouth Bubbler?
Gregory H on Dec 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Make sure you have the second generation 5 gal Big Mouth Bubbler. Also, measure the height from inside lid to bottom. Dimensions of Depth Charge are:

Lid Port: 3.46"
Screen Dimensions: 3.875" OD, 14.5" H
Could you give the dimensions of the screen? Height X Diameter & Microns of mesh.
A shopper on Dec 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: From the description:
Lid Port: 3.46"
Screen Dimensions: 3.875" OD, 14.5" H

How will this do with pellet hops?
A shopper on Jan 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: A negligible amount of hop material may get through. Pellet hops are easier to stir or agitate with the plunger.
Is there a 1 gallon version?
A shopper on Dec 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is not a one gallon version available at this time.
Will this fit the Glass Big Mouth Bubbler?
A shopper on Jan 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Item description says it fits both plastic and glass big mouth bubblers..
How does this fair with pellet hops?
A shopper on Jan 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It works well. I just completed an IPA with a 2oz dryhop bill, using the Depth Charge. Follow the instructions on pushing the hops down after a few hours. After the 1 week called for the pellets has, as expected, broken down, with a hop "mush" in the bottom of the Depth Charge. I found that the beer was much clearer than using muslin bags. Very happy with purchase.
Will this thing fit the Catalyst fermenter?
A shopper on Dec 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Depth Charge is not designed for the Catalyst, however the filter portion fits snug between the bottom of the lid, and the cone of the fermenter. You will not be able to access the filter with the lid on.
Can you guys make a video for this?
Tim L on Jan 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for the request!
Would the 5 gallon Big Mouth Bubbler be to small for the depth charge? I'm afraid there won't be enough head space left and may over flow with the depth charge filled with 4 ounces of pellet hops.
A shopper on Jul 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It should work. The depth charge has practically no affect on the volume and the hops will eventually sink. Make sure to keep the volume at the 5 gallon mark. I had hops in the air lock when I went past the mark. I just punched the hops down or gently swirled the carboy instead of worrying!
? Will this work with the FastFerment.
Garry M on Apr 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't see why not, I typically only let the goods stew for about 1 week (depending on the strength. I.E I use this to infuse the sweet orange peel into a belgian or wheat)
It looks like this is shown with the plastic bubbler. Will the Depth Charge work with the 5 and 6.5 glass big mouth bubbles?
A shopper on Dec 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: In my experience, yes it will. The overall tube length is still several inches from the bottom of the 6.5, it'd probably be tight but it should work.
Has anyone tried to use this with a fruit infusion? For example, how many pounds of raspberries could this infuser hold?
A shopper on Apr 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: i havent, but i could do some math to calculate the volume.. the other question that is important is how much of the depth charge would be submerged in the liquid, which depends on the size of your fermentor, 5 or 6gal.. filling it to the top would be a waste if its not all submerged. i estimate usable volume to be about 120 cu in. (11 in height and 3.75in diam) according to some website it says that 120 cu in of wild northern plains raspberries would be 2.4 lbs.. take that for what its worth.. thats what you get for asking an engineer.. ;P
Can this go in a dishwasher for cleaning?
Michael L on Apr 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's pretty tall if you stand it up, but apart from that it's steel, so it shouldn't be an issue in the dishwasher. Honestly it cleans up pretty easily by hand. I have a bunch of strawberries in mine right now, and am going to just scrub it down by hand when I pull it out in a few days.
I use the dual port lid for the airlock and temperature probe. Since the depth charge has a single port, what would be a work around? Anyway to modify to keep the dual port lid?
A shopper on Mar 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I drilled a small hole in the depth charge stopper off to the side of center to accommodate a temperature probe.
have you fixed the sealing problems with the lids yet?
A shopper on Sep 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No we have not. Was opening the manufacturer would find a solution to THEIR problem.
How many ounces of hops (fresh) does this hold ?
A shopper on Mar 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Oz, I'm not sure. The hops I've grown vary greatly in size, but if you can find the dimensions (circumference and height) then I'm sure you could find the volume of material this can hold. It is a few inches wide, so to speak, and fairly long. It is bigger in real life than the pictures make it look!
Can the Depth Charge be used for wet or dry wine skins for fermenting wine?
A shopper on Aug 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Should work great for that!
How many ounces of pellets would fit in the depth charge and still be submerged in a 5 gallon big mouth Bubbler?
A shopper on Jul 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have added up to 4 oz pellets, and I would not use any more than that. I tried 2 oz of whole hops and that was really pushing it. I have found that some of hops stay above the beer until the pellets start or break up or whole hops saturate. I suggest starting with a recipe that would use 2 oz, then you can experiment from there.
Would you have problems with oxidation since the lid is removed and you are plunging hops(and air) down into the beer?
A shopper on Dec 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I haven't had any oxidation issues with using the Depth Charge. It works great!
Would the depth charge be appropriate to use with GenuWine crushed grape skins that come with En Primeur wine kits?
A shopper on Aug 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The Depth Charge would work perfect for those wine skins!
Do you add the stainless steel infuser before or after fermentation?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would only add the infuser to the vessel needed for the recipe. For instance dry hopping typically occurs near the end of the process. If you're using a secondary, add the infuser to the secondary when racking from the primary to the secondary. But if you're not using a secondary and completing everything in Primary, I'd recommend adding the infuser to the primary at the beginning of fermentation that way you can drop in the hops at the appropriate time.
Can a stopper thermowell fit and be used with the depth charge?
A shopper on Jan 27, 2017
Big Mouth Bubbler® Depth Charge™
Big Mouth Bubbler® Depth Charge™
Stopper Thermowell
Stopper Thermowell
BEST ANSWER: The lid has a white silicone seal at the top with a hole that is 3/8" wide, so it can accept a standard airlock. The thermowell, once removed from the stopper, would fit there just fine, but this could only be done during a secondary after fermentation is long done or pressure could built.
Is the air lock still used with this set up ?
A shopper on Jan 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the airlock can be used with this lid.
How about peanut butter powder?
A shopper on Jan 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We have not tested this, but feel peanut butter powder may be too fine for the 300 micron mesh, or it could completely clog the mesh.
I have a 5 gallon plastic and 6.5 gallon plastic Big Mouth Bubblers with the the screw on lid/rings. Will the 'Depth Charge' work with these?
A shopper on Nov 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the universal lid style will work with those.
