Props to Northern Brewer
Scroll down, and you'll see my rather critical review of the EVO 2 Big Mouth Bubbler, due to the design flaw of the lid (otherwise, it's a GREAT fermentor), at least for when they originally came out, but now, they have the new, improved, Universal Lid which should make amends for past seal problems. Anyways, after I vented a bit about how the older, ineffective lids should be replaced by the company, free of charge, I was contacted by Northern Brewer, indicating that they could perhaps assist me in getting a replacement lid. That was on the 23rd of this month, October. This evening when I arrived home, there was a delivery waiting on my front porch, containing the Universal replacement lid for the Big Mouth Bubbler EVO 2, compliments of Northern Brewer. Suffice it to say, I was/am IMPRESSED, and very glad that I refer friends and family to buy from this QUALITY distributor, for most, if not all of one's brewing needs. Sure, I enjoy supporting my local home brew stores, but for anything that they don't carry, this is the place that I revisit, time and time again, for selection, price, and SERVICE, after the sale, which in this case, imo, was above and beyond, again, THANK YOU! Singed, a loyal customer for life.

Nice glass, terrible lid Do not buy!
I was excited about the Evo-2 as I prefer glass to plastic. When it arrived I was happy to see that the glass was thick and looked sturdy. The trouble started after I poured my wort into the Evo and put on the lid (not really the time to find out something is wrong)...It popped back up. I pushed it down again and twisted thinking that I did not get it down far enough the first time... wrong... it popped up again..and again...and again. I decided that maybe the opening was wet (as I had just poured my wort into it) and decided to try and dry it, even though I had qualms about using an un-sanitized paper towel, but I did it anyway as I saw no other option. It popped up again. I had to use duct tape to secure it down. This product would be good if you like open fermentation, but I like a closed fermentation with an airlock. Do Not buy if you was a closed fermentation. I will get another Keggo 7 gallon glass fermenter from beveragefactory. The price is as good if you catch their sales and the product actually seals!

Poor seal
Tried the glass Evo and was unable to get a complete seal during fermentation. Tried replacing the lid seal, and still no luck. To NB's credit, they took it back no questions asked. I would not try this carboy again.

Bad lid
To me, the most important part for brewing is being sanitary. It is really discomforting to use this product because the lid does not seal well. It would if it was dry, but because I sanitize the lid, it slips right off and breaks the seal. I am currently using duct tape to keep the lid down. I'll likely never use this product again, and will stick to using the cheaper buckets because they're more reliable and well... cheaper and I've never ran into problems with them. If the big mouth and it's lid were one review and not separate reviews, I wouldn't have purchased this product.

Big Mouth Bubbler 6.5 Gallon Lid
So ive brewed a few batches in this and i like it BUT the lid wont stay on Ive woke up to a few messes on my counter even with the recommended blow off tube installed.. The lid just blew and spewed a nasty yeasty beer mess all over the place.. I took pictures and even some videos of this action during the height of fermentation showing foam and yeast blowing out the seal of the lid and all down the side onto my counter top..The few successful batches i had were done "without a yeast starter" who in their right mind wants to make a delicious beer without a starter?? Everytime i used a yeast starter the lid came clean off.. This last time I even duct taped the lid on four spots while using the monster blow off tube I purchased from NB and that still didnt hold it on All in all im not a happy camper with my purchase.. For the price there should at least be a secure way to seal the lid without duct taping it to the fermentor like a threaded lid.Glass fementor with wide mouth is greatThe lid that it uses is a epic fail on many levels

Hi Dan, thanks for submitting this info, its being posted. I should be able to help. What kind of lid do you have? I take it the universal with the gasket(essentially a big stopper). And I assume you are only making 5 gallon batches? We'd love to see photos if you had them...well, I would mainly be interested in the glass opening...if you wanted to measure it and/or check it for being even and round? I wonder if the opening is too narrow or misshapen and if it is tough to get it in to the lid? As long as you are trying to ferment about 5 gallons, sounds like it would be due to some issue....hmm, not sure the best solution.

Since it sounds like if the yeast grow up to the lid, they very well may push it up...unless it had a weight on it..or a screw down to hold it on. That was the old lid, but it suffered from a poor seal, though some people have modified them to allow you to screw down over the new lid to get a good seal. Could maybe advise on doing that or something similar...or we could try a replacement. That might work.

We aim for satisfaction with every purchase so let us know what we can do to help!

Bad lids......easy fix
Bubblers are awesome and I wanted to go with all glass and got sick of using narrow carboys. As for the new lids I knew going into buying these that they are a major problem so I did some research prior and used a large hose clamp around the neck of the bubbler and then 2 velcro straps from Amazon to go from hose clamp over the top of the lid to the other side of the hose clamp. So far it works great

Lid Stinks
Bought this and was so excited to use...until I work up the next morning after brew day...found my beer foaming down the side and beer all over the floor...thank goodness this was on tile...was told to get a brick to help keep the lid on next time by NB...let's just say I didn't spend $60 on this to then find out I need a brick to actually make it work...will never buy another one and I let everyone in my homebrew club know not to buy this product...time to go back to the drawing board on this one...great idea...but a major component doesn't work...

Very solid and easy to use. Lot's of room for krausen. Make sure you get the screw on cap if you use a the blowoff tube as it can pull the push-on top off.

Lid was designed by kindergartener
Very high quality glass, great concept. Lid design is HUGE problem. When you tighten it down to ensure an airtight seal, its impossible to get the lid off again. I had blowoff get up around the seal area and it acted like glue. I tried using some channel locks and a towel to get it off and it cracked. I ended up cutting the top out using a box knife so I could get an auto siphon in it cause the orifice in the top isn't big enough.

Big Mouth Bubbler EVO 2 6.5 Gal Glass Fermenter
For me I think it's going to be too heavy to brew 5 gals. So I've decided to do 3 gal batches. Age has decreased my quantity drinking,so 3 gal kegs will be my route. I would have bought plastic had I realized the weight and difficulty of holding a large wet glass container. The harness I bought will definitely be used.

If the Universal lid does not have a solid seal (which seems to be a common issue from reading reviews), are there any other options?
M I on Feb 4, 2016

There are other options. The main issue seems to be not so much with the new lids as with some of the the older Evo2's. As far as I can tell, it seems like there can be some variance in the inner diameter of the opening. BMB did straighten it out, so all the ones we currently sell should fit just fine. But if you get it and it doesn't seal adequately, we could talk about replacing the carboy or refunding you for the lid.

You have to count them to determine at what level you are at.
Is glass EVO 2 safe for pulling a vacuum on to degas wine? I like to use a vacuum pump to degas wine kits. Don't want to order one of these if it's going to implode and spew wine all over my kitchen. Thanks!
U F on Jul 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Implosion would not be a problem in my opinion. But the lid is. I found the Big Mouth lid would not stay on during beer fermentation, even when vented with a hose. The foam forced it off the bottle. I had to weigh it down with bricks for it to stay in place.
I'm interested in purchasing one of these as it's the only glass fermenter compatible with the Brew Jacket. There seem to have been a lot of complaints about the lid. Has this issue been fixed, or would I be rolling the dice purchasing one of these?
Josh H on Jul 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Most folks have had good luck with these, but some have had issues getting the lid to stay where they want it. But the lid for this does not have to stay "all the way down" for it to be functioning correctly. Some have had good luck just inverting the silicone seal-ring on the new lid to have it hold in place more securely. These are really nice fermenters, the lid is not a problem in the vast majority of cases. -Mike W, Northern Brewer
Having a problem with universal lid migrating up and leaking on big mouth evo 2 glass. A blow off tube is installed. I've added a 3 lb weight and seems to be holding, but is there a solid fix/solution to this problem? The universal lid does seem to work more effectively on the plastic big mouth though. Thank you

Javier L on Apr 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Great question! Start by making sure the silicone and also inner rim of the Bubbler are both dry before sealing. Push the cover onto the Bubbler and twist the top back and forth a bit as if screwing and unscrewing a lid. This will fully seat the gasket. During extra vigorous ferments you also may want to follow these same instructions but flip the gasket on the lid upside down. This will create an extremely tight fit.
Do they have drying racks for these like the old style carboys have?
K E on Dec 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have no clue. But with the open mouth you can get your hand in to dry it out with the supplied micro fiber towel
Im curious as to why BMB hasnt come up with or developed a large screw on ring (similar to a Ball Mason canning jar) to hold the lid down. Has anyone at NB had this conversation with BMB?
A shopper on May 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Actually, it is my understanding that you don't want an air tight seal. Ribbed silicone rings ensure a positive seal to keep out pests, while the non-threaded design allows the lid to move preventing an out-of-control fermentation from dangerously pressurizing your fermentor. I had a screw on lid, like you describe, when I first ordered the big mouth bubbler but I'm using the ribbed cap and it works fine
What is the bottom on the inside of this carboy like? Would I be able to put this on a stir plate to aerate yeast?
A shopper on Dec 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is domed (concave as viewed from the underside), so you'd need a strong magnet in the stir plate to keep the stir bar in place. More than that, I'd be concerned about how it will rest on the stir plate. On a square stir plate, it will be sitting only on the four corners -- if you have much liquid in it, I'd be concerned about that concentrated pressure cracking the glass. These are made to be resting on their circular bottom.
I recently received two of these bubblers through a promotion and was really excited. According to the photos on your site, it shows the plastic 6.5's coming with the old style lid. Naturally after seeing online reviews, I also purchased two universal lids so that I could use the old lids with the new ones as one unit . Sadly I received no old lids like in the photos and got 4 universals instead. Customer service refunded me for two lids and assured me the universals will work without any issues. Well, we have issues. After a few brews, the universal lid pops up during fermentation and leaks. And yes I have tried installing them dry. Is the any way to get the old lids anywhere??? Also what is northern brewer doing about this for us consumers who spend our hard earned money on your products? So far I'm concerned about my brew going bad, and that's not just a cheap batch to say "oh well" on. Please help!
B H on May 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have one of the glass EVO 2 Big Mouth Bubbler with the old lid and one with the new universal lid. I much prefer the old lid. I recognize that they received a number of complaints from people who didn't understand how to tighten (break in) the old style lid and had gas leaks but having an option to buy the old style would be wonderful.
Can these be used for no chill? Or would the temperature change Crack them?
D O on Apr 18, 2016

Thanks for your question. The temperature change would indeed crack the glass.

Is there anyway to keep new lid down without duct tape. I like the bigmouth design. New lid pops up without pressure. I brewed northy12 and secured with tape to not loose it.
matt p. on Mar 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There are options for editing an original lid to act as a screw down to secure it, basically cutting out the middle of it. Usually if you allow it to dry, give the lid a twist to seat it, it should hold. Be sure to not over fill and that it is not clogging and actual yeast foam is pushing the lid out. Consider contacting customer service about the quality of your product received. A weight will also hold it down if experiencing this issue.
When will the new lid be available as a separate item to purchase for those of us who bought the poorly designed predecessor?
A M on Oct 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If having issues with an old lid we'd be happy to replace it. If placing a new order we would be happy to throw it in with the same shipment. It is available online now as well.
Is the bung hole large enough to accomodate a raking cane?
S T on Oct 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No. And I was quite disappointed to find that out. It seemed a missed opportunity to make the lid with a bung, but make it too small to be useful except for the airlock.
Are there any plans to port the Glass Big mouth bubbler like the plastic ones?
J B on Oct 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Right now I'm not aware of any plans to offer a product like that

but new products are handled by a different department and we here in Customer Service get little to no heads up about these matters. Cheers. -Tyler
Is the height of the 6.5 gallon really 17.5 inches? The 5 gallon is listed as 0.5 inches taller.

BEST ANSWER: It is 17.5". The 5 gallon is a lot skinnier and taller. Cheers!
What is the circumference?
A shopper on Nov 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi there, the circumference is about 38 inches. Cheers!
Is it possible to buy one of these with the screw-on type lid?
K E on Aug 24, 2016

Thanks for contacting us! We kept stock of the old lids at first, but we don't have any left, and they are no longer being manufactured.
Will there be a screw on lid available? The universal lids do no fit properly and come off easy which makes transporting difficult. There are threads on the container so a screw lid should be helpful. Thanks
J A on Apr 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for the suggestion. A screw lid used to be standard, but variations in hand formed glass lead to poor seals. We'll consider this feedback about being able to transport the fermentor for the future. Cheers!
If there was a way to put a spigot this would be awesome. I like the spigot from the Big mouth plastic bubbler. It is easier all the way around and do not need to siphon. Process steps get cut down and so do cleaning.
Anthony P on Mar 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We do offer a siphonless version of this fermentor. Item number 41846
I read the reviews. Still bought new style. I thought the blow off tube and high gravity brew might have been culpret. Found no bubble and active ferment.spray sanitizer on big blow off tube bought with new glass carboy.found it to bubble. Lid still pops up. Changed airlocks. No matter what I do lid pops up after seconds. I don't want to remove it. Is this common? Is there fix besides duct tape which it even peels up? Will old screw lid go over new style to thread it secure? I really don't wanna ruin any brew!
matt p. on Mar 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: When inserting the lid, ensure that the interior of the Bubbler's mouth is dry; this will increase friction and provide a better seal. The lid should not pop up, but if it does, this is unlikely to negatively impact your beer. The old screw lid will not fit perfectly over the new universal lid without modification.
Based on a Northern Brewer Youtube video, on video it look like the glass fermenter is a screw top... are the pics on website outdated? or did I see it wrong? is the glass fermenter a screw on?
G I on Feb 16, 2016

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! The bubbler in the video is outdated. The new improved lid is not a screw on lid.
I received both the screw top and universal lids in my box. The threads are definitely a problem so I thought I would try just fitting on the universal which I have two of. I could not get thediet of them to stay on tight. They just pop up with even the slightest pressure. Will this get better when I put it on with an airlock on it? Or how have others had luck? Thanks.
T J on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The universal lids have a tendency to pop up under pressure. We recommend taping them down or gently strapping them down to prevent this. However, even if you were not to further secure the lids, the gas exchange will not severely impact the quality of your brew.
I have one of these with the old crappy lid that does not seal. can I buy just this new lid and will it fit. I just bought the old on around a month or so ago and feel like I got took.
A C on Oct 24, 2015

Do you have the order number (or numbers) that you purchased your big mouths under

I went through your 5 or 6 most recent orders and I couldn't find any big mouths although I may have missed it. Please contact us either by email at brewmaster@northernbrewer.com or by telephone at 1-800-681-2739 option 1.

I should be able to set you up with a lid or two.
