Better yet, the port is perfectly sized for all your standard homebrew tools, from a universal carboy bung and standard blowoff hose to a testing thief and auto-siphon.

Easy to clean, just pop it in the top rack of your dishwasher and run it through a standard cycle. You can also use your standard homebrew cleaners and sanitizers.

The universal lids all use a:
  • Small universal stopper
  • Standard 6.5 rubber stopper.

    Solved
I've had exactly the same issues as everyone else has described. I was going to trim the rim off this lid so that I could secure it in place with the screw down part of the old two piece lid, which I replaced since it didn't seal well, but instead I took the gasket from this lid, turned it upside down and inserted it through the ring of the old two piece lid and then inserted the ported piece of the two piece lid as normal, voila, good seal and a slight blowout reservoir on the lid.

    Had some trouble
Like may of the reviews on here the main problem I had was the lid popping off. My solution is as follows: Make sure the gasket and lid are completely dry. Even inside the ribs. I'm not saying just let it drip dry for a second and slap it on the big mouth bubbler, I mean bone dry. I also left the lid on the mouth of the fermentor a little loose so it can relieve some pressure. After that I had no problems.

    Good replacement for original lid
I purchased this to replace my original lid that was damaged. It works fine. ( 3 batches in so far ) It does slide up a little bit, but the multiple rings keep it sealed, the blue rim is not your sealing point. I also clean the inside of the bubbler rim with alcohol to clean off the star-san before inserting the lid.

Universal Lid Pops Off (and my solution)
The single port universal lid does not seal well as it comes from NB. To fix:
    1. Make sure inside rim of carbon is clean & dry
    2. Invert the triple flange gasket so the widest flange of the gasket is furthest from the lid flange.
    3. Make sure the lid is fully seated in the mouth of the carboy
    4. VERY IMPORTANT: Increase the size of the little holes in the airlock cap. These little holes are the only path for the excess CO2 to escape. For a robust fermentation they are too small, and if they get clogged with any residue the pressure will blow the lid off. Even if they don’t clog they are still too small IMHO.

I donâ??t like them. They wonâ??t stay closed. What looked like a good idea was a total flop. I modified mine so they will stay closed but you shouldnâ??t have to do that. It should be pulled from N.B. catalogs until they design a lid that works.

    Worthy concept
I own a Big Mouth Brewer kit with two universal lids. During my first brew, the lid sanitized with Star San crept out as have others.
In my opinion, Northern Brewer is on to something good, and simply need to refine their design to address this problem. I for one am a bit skeptical about air drying the lid for sanitary reasons, but found a solution by accident. I coincidentally set my primary fermenter on this surface found in many homes. (Bench Vise)

there are holes in the bench that accomodate a bungee. Voila. NB could also design a better fitting blow off assembly that the loose fitting 1" tubing. I'm rating 3 because I think with the proper tweaks, this can be a winner. I'll keep using it.

Lid pops out, do not buy!!!
Do not buy a big mouth bubbler until they solve the lid issue! I have two of the original big mouth bubblers and love them. Easy to clean and the screw on lids worked well in my opinion. Others say they leak, but if the seal does leak a little it is just the CO2 from fermentation leaking out. I purchased a replacement lid that has two ports. The new lid popped out during primary fermentation and exposed the entire batch to open air. Not cool!!!! They spin this as a feature to avoid bursting from overpressure but that is a poor attempt to hide a fundamental flaw in their design. The big mouth bubbler is the right tool for the job with a proper lid, but they don’t sell a proper lid at the moment that I am aware of. Don’t buy it until they do!

    I use it but...
I really wish they'd work out a way to fix these lids.

They tend to pop off. I've talked to customer service a couple of times and the advice is the same: "There's nothing wrong with them..." Just pop them on there dry..."

Basically, it's not a great lid. It doesn't stay on as well as it should. I cut the top, widest ring off and it's better.

Sometimes I just put something heavy on top of it.

Long story short, I use it and will keep using it but it's inferior.

You may want to try removing the lid, take the gasket off, and reinstall the gasket upside down. The ribs on the gasket will engage in a much tighter manner. You'll still want to install it according to the above instructions, but I think you'll find that it grabs much more.

    Poor design, worse customer service
I purchased (2) of the glass 6.5 gal and (2) of the glass 5 gal Big Mouth Bubblers when the EVO2 was released. I also purchased extra lids because I wanted to have extra on hand. Since then, I've brewed several batches and every time, I've had trouble with the lids not sealing and staying in place. Even using a blow off tube instead of an air lock, the lids just don't stay. I called to talk to customer service and they told me that they were unaware of this issue and assured me that the lids work well. I called again today, because I don't understand whey they went away from the original threaded design, and clearly, I am not the only one that has had trouble with these lids. I was hoping to purchase a few of the original threaded lids, or possibly a few of the grey lids used on the Little Big Mouth Bubblers, but I was told that they no longer sell the original threaded lids and that the only way to get one of the lids from the Little Big Mouth Bubbler is to buy a Little Big Mouth Bubbler! They don't sell replacement/spare lids like they do for the others! Until now, I've been a big fan of Northern Brewer, but this is ridiculous! What will it take for them to admit that it's a poor design and design a lid that stays in place? Why aren't they doing a recall and replacing these lids? Customers shouldn't have to use Gorilla tape to hold the lids in place!

There are a few tricks that can help get you bubbling away happily. First, I would sanitize the lid and let it air dry a bit before inserting. Press one side of the lid in first, then the opposing side. Lift up the lid in places until you see and feel the ribs on the lid gasket "lock" into place. It should feel noticeably tight once you do so. If a tight fit is not attainable with the normal insertion technique above, you're still in luck. Remove the lid, take the gasket off, and reinstall the gasket upside down. The ribs on the gasket will engage in a much tighter manner. You'll still want to install it according to the above instructions, but I think you'll find that it grabs much more.

    Lids don't stay in fermentor
I thought that after the poor reviews on these lids that they would have improved them by now. But I bought them thinking I could most likely figure out how to make them stay inserted into the big mouth bubbler necks. They didn't stay inserted more than 10 minutes before they popped out.

I chucked them in my lathe and reduced the diameters to 5.72" and made them so the original screw on rings will fit over them and flipped the seals upside down and inserted them. Now there's no way they can come out without the rings being removed first. They now fit nicely into the rings, but could be a bit smaller, maybe 5.70". I didn't want them to be too loose a fit.

Make that one change to the outside diameter on them and either provide the rings or make the ring part of the installation and I bet you start to see some 5 start ratings on them.

Is it possible to purchase the "old style" screw on lid? This new universal lid often pops during very active fermentation and doesn't work well.
    Emery k on Apr 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The old screw-on style lids for the glass fermentors are no longer available. The universal lid performs best when the interior of the Bubbler's mouth is dry at the time the lid is inserted.
Will this fit a small big mouth bubbler ? Can i purchase the old style lid to screw on top of this lid to get an even better seal ?
    A shopper on Aug 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have both the 5 gal and 6.5 gal Big Mouth and it works on both, so I assume, given that it says "Universal" that it will work on all sized Big Mouth Bubblers. This replaces the screw top lid, and only one of the two will work - not both at once. This is far superior to the screw on lid.
will this lid accept the small 3 piece airlock
    T A on May 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You need to get a universal stopper that sits in this lid, and then you can put an airlock in that stopper (I think this one works - small universal stopper)
Will this lid fit the Little Big Mouth Bubbler?
    Bruce K on Jan 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes is does. It holds a seal better than the screw on lid that come with the Big Mouth Bubbler.
What diameter opening will this universal lid fit? I know its design for BMB, but I'd like to try to use on a different fermenter.
    Jacob C on Jul 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't know the diameter, but I have an older BMB, and the universal lid does not fit, I've gone back to using the original lid. When I complained about it they suggested I use tape to secure the universal lid, to keep it from popping up.

    Three-Piece Airlock
BEST ANSWER: I've never put the airlock into the dishwasher. I have always had washed with warm water. At the end of the day the most important thing is to make sure all airlock pieces and the rubber gromet air put into sanitizer before being placed on the fermenter
What is the smallest inside diameter this will fit in?
    R C on Apr 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is 5" wide at its narrowest.
I just received two of these lids that I purchased based on your item description.. What blow off hose fits this size? Surely not the standard 1.25 outside diameter vinyl tubing.. Mine doesn't fit snug at all, and I've confirmed the opening to be over 1.25 inches with calipers.
    A Z on Nov 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You could create a blow off b putting 3/8 ID vinyl tubing through the hole in the universal bung that is recommended to fit that hole. I hope this helps! Cheers!
Are the gaskets available separately? Will a dual ported version of the lid be available soon? Thanks
    Justin T on Nov 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, extra lid gaskets are available and the dual port lid is available also. Check out page 34 in the Fall 2015 catalog.
My lid seems to rise during particularly active fermentations. Is it still sealing the Big Mouth airtight?
    C O on Nov 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Your lid may be forced up a little during the first days of fermentation. The Big Mouth Bubbler is sealed air tight as long as one ring of the seal on the Universal lid is touching the carboy neck. The lid being forced up by the internal pressure of the Big Mouth Bubbler actually shows that it is sealing completely.

    Thanks for the question

please let us know if you need anything else. Cheers! Todd J @ NorthernBrewer.com
I have the earlier version of the glass big mouth carboy. Will the universal lid fit that earlier version?
    Derrick R on Oct 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it fits great. But when fitting on the lid, you need to let the lid dry a little sanitizing it. It doesn't want to stay on when wet. It slips off a little. But afterwards it seems to fit great
Are you still not making the screw on ring to solve all the issues people have with the cap working itself off under pressure?
    A shopper on Jul 20, 2017

I have one of the first versions of BMB that came with the screw on lid, that never has made a good seal. I am wondering if this new type of lid will work on the original style of BMB with better results. Thanks.
    Susan E on May 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: That is the intention, this Universal Lid should fit on all models of Big Mouth Bubbler that were produced. It seals in a different way than the original lid design, and ought to work well on an early Big Mouth Bubbler. _Mike W, Northern Brewer
Can I use the old screw lid to place atop this seal? That would be perfect!
    M R on Mar 9, 2016
    BEST ANSWER: Maj,

Yes! If you still have one of the old style lids you can absolutely do that.

    Cheers!
