Product Details

Another Curt and Kathy creation, this melomel also uses a sweet mead for a base, but adds blackberry puree instead of raspberry during secondary fermentation. This adds tannin as well as acid into the flavor complex; combined with the deeper color of the fruit, this melomel has elements of a sweet late-harvest red wine or ruby port mixed in with the floral high notes of wildflower honey.

I made this 10 months ago and just taste blah.
This is my first mead so I followed directions exactly as provided by NB. It’s been 10 months in the bottle now and it just doesn’t have much of Blackberry taste at all. Just taste like sweet honey water to me with maybe a hint of blackberries. Needless To say I’m pretty disappointed with the results. I did ferment it out dry FG .990 and it’s around 14% alcohol but i thought the blackberry purée would add some sweetness to it and flavor, it did not. I think the only way to make this is to use a different yeast so it won’t ferment out the way like D-47 And/Or BackSweeten it with honey and blackberries of some kind. I have made plenty of beer and wines so I do understand how the process works. I’ll just let it sit and hopefully it will get better in a few more months. Im definitely thinking the people who gave this a 5 star rating must have backsweeten the mead.

First try
The directions were easy to follow. The result so far is really nice. I would suggest that a greater emphasis be placed on the high level of cleanliness required for success. I had the assistance of someone who had experience, so my batch is fine, but I never would have understood it from just the included directions.

Great Kit, easy to make, requires patiences
Quite easy to make vs beer. I would say that it does really need a year to age before it hits it's prime.

Wonderful Kit Mead
I did this mead almost two years ago and it just keeps getting better. It was drinkable at 2 months, worth sharing with other home brewers at 6 months and by 9 months it was guest worthy and is only getting better. Easy to get the must built and in the fermenter the hardest part about this kit is the waiting!

Easy to use, very promising
This was my very first mead. Kit was easy to use, ingredients were premium. Instructions were very clear and easy.Mead is in secondary now, and smells wonderful. This will take a long time to mature, but so far, very highly recommended.

Easy and good
First mead making experience. I think it could be a little sweeter but my girlfriend loves it so we will be making more!

Brewed this mead to serve at my wedding, but it was too good to waste on all those people. It is not terribly sweet but neither is it bone dry. I followed the instructions strictly, and after 6 months it is a great finished product that I am unwilling to share. I plan on brewing this again and trying the raspberry melomel next.

not a fan
I followed the directions that came with this kit but my final product had a strong alcohol taste to it with almost no blackberry flavor. looking at the other reviews though it may get better after i let it sit for some more time. i hope

dry as a bone
"sweet" is mentioned multiple times in the description and instructions. After starting at 1.115 it finished primary at 1.000, which is anything but...I think it's salvageable but $84 is a lot to spend on something and not remotely get what you signed up to buy.

how many gallons does this yield?
A shopper on May 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I was able to bottle and cork 28 (750 ml ) bottles and 4 more ( 375 ml ) bottles = 30 ( 750 ml) all together. The
4 (375's) were test bottles during the one year aging process. About 5 gallons in total was the yield. Hope this
Info was helpful. The mead was enjoyed by my entire family and friends. Maske sure you age, makes a difference. Just finished my second mead ( Orange Blossom Honey ) drinkable in October.

What is the ratio for one packet of Curt and kathy's yeast nutrient blend?
A shopper on Apr 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is what I read somewhere:
1/2 teaspoon of yeast nutrient
1/4 teaspoon of yeast energizer
This is the ratio for those packets that you add each day after pitching yeast.
I’m making my own mead right now and this is the ratio I’m using.
