Robb Howard

Where are you from? Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I currently live on 3 acres in the Town of Lisbon that was originally homesteaded by my family in 1840.

What is your favorite brewing topic to talk to customers about? Growing hops and their local history.

What was your biggest brewing blunder? Dumping the trub from a Raspberry Wheat (5lbs. Raspberry pulp) in the basement stationary tub, plugging the sanitary lift pump, wet vacuuming the "black slop of death" out of the crock, dropping the wet vac, subsequently found the splash radius of the "black slop of death" to be 13' in every direction and 3' up all your wife's appliances (thought the appliances were ours until that moment only to find out they were hers).

What movie have you watched the most times? "A River Runs Through It."

What was your proudest moment in your fermentation history? Anytime someone says with disbelief -- "You made this? It's really good."

Why do you brew? Prior job was in insurance. Brewing was a creative outlet that I didn't find in that cubicle, where everything was done "by the manual" with no creative thought.  Also end result of brewing is pretty dang good.

When did you start brewing? Long time ago, but consistently since 7 years ago.

What is your brewing system? Simple batch sparge, 10.5 gallon cooler, 10 gallon Megapot on a propane burner, 7.9 stainless conical with temperature control, and 15+ glass secondaries of various sizes, 2 tap kegerator for beer, and a 300 bottle wine cellar for Wine and Mead.

What is your favorite style of beer for drinking and for brewing? Wet hop IPA, which  I make once a year using historic local hops that I found on the property of one of my ancestors, James Weaver (who was the first family to settle in Sussex/Lisbon).  I transplanted several of these historic hops in my hop yard.

If you could share a beer with anyone throughout history, of even fictional, who would it be? Richard Warren (a distant relative), who came to America on the Mayflower. He was not one of the Pilgrims but was a signatory to the Mayflower Compact.

Where do you spend your non-brewing time? Tending to my hops or fly fishing local lakes and streams.

Who are your three favorite musicians/bands? Chicago, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Mumford and Sons.
