Rybak and the City of Minneapolis have proclaimed Saturday, Dec. 10th “Minneapolis Home Brewing Day.” City Council Member John H. Quincy will be on hand to say a few words during the symbolic event at Northern Brewer’s store in Minneapolis (6021 Lyndale Ave. S). There will also be homebrewers from local clubs in attendance brewing several batches of beer. Homebrewing (and home winemaking) has come a long way since being legalized by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. The American Homebrewers Association estimates that at least 750,000 Americans make their own beer and/or wine at home. The hobby supports many shops, publications, radio shows, internet forums, and webcasts. The hobby is also partly to credit for recent resurgences in the DIY culture and craft beer industry - both as supporters and a pool of talent. In 2010, Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area was named one of the best cities in country to be a homebrewer by the American Homebrewers Association. And the local homebrewing community has only grown stronger since then. The metro area is home to several award-winning and nationally-renowned homebrewing clubs. In 2010, Minneapolis hosted the National Homebrewers Conference. Based in Roseville, MN, Northern Brewer is the nation’s largest online homebrew supplier and has retail locations in St. Paul, Minneapolis and Milwaukee. Our staff has grown exponentially since opening in 1993 and many of our alumni have gone on to brew professionally. We’re dedicated to creating and maintaining resources like our online forum, homebrewing and winemaking classes, a line of instructional DVDs, and the Brewing TV webcast to keep homebrewers informed and connected.
