Known as Ares to the Greeks and Mars to the Romans, the God of war and agriculture lends his name to this farmhouse ale that pays tribute to the Bière de Mars style—a rare subtype of the French Bière de Garde. It pours amber red and is capped by white foam. Low bitterness emphasizes the malt character—rich yet mellow with undertones of toasty toffee. French Saison yeast creates a decidedly dry finish with distinctive farmhouse funkyness that is accented by the subtle herbal and fruity notes of French Strisselspalt hops. Full-flavored yet easy-drinking, it's perfectly suited for the transition into the growing season, from the cold months of winter to the fertile days of spring.

We strongly recommend ordering dry yeast in the summer months. We do include complimentary Cold Ice Packs with all liquid yeasts. However, it is difficult to guarantee that the ice packs will survive the trip, given transit times and particularly hot temperatures.

Product Details
Bière de Mars is a rare subtype of the French Bière de Garde style. Bière de Garde (literally “beer for keeping”) comes from the farmhouse brewing traditions of the region, where beer was brewed in the cooler months in between growing seasons. Bière de Garde was strong and malty, capable of being stored for substantial periods of time, to be drank throughout the warm summer months to sustain the farmers until the return of the cool weather of the brewing season. Bière de Mars (literally “beer of March”) was the last beer brewed at the end of the brewing season (usually around March), brewed to a lower gravity than Bière de Garde, it was intended to be drank fresh rather than cellared like Bière de Garde - it was the last to be brewed, and the first to be drank.

Really nice beer
I just opened my first of this beer. Delicious stuff. The description sounds pretty close to what I taste. I used the Danstar Belle Saison yeast and an O2 aeration kit for the wort. I just pitched the dry yeast directly at around 66F. I fermented at 66F in the primary over 2 weeks, with a slow ramping to be around 72 in the last week or so of fermentation. SG was 1.055, and final was 1.004. Final gravity was hit after about 10 days, and I let it sit in the primary for 2 full weeks. I then racked to a secondary for 2 weeks. The beer cleared nicely and stayed at a gravity of 1.004 despite a few airlock bubbles during the first week. I bottled with 4 oz of corn sugar and bottle conditioned for two weeks in 1 liter ez caps. The beer has a nice head, good lacing, and ample bubbles. The color is very similar to the NB webpage photo sample. The aroma and taste are both fantastic. Highly recommended for those that like saison style beers.

Delicious alternative to saisons
Brewed with Wyeast French Saison yeast. This is the yeast I've use for saisons in the past (instead of the Belgian variety), so, not surprisingly, this beer has lots in common with the Belgian farmhouse ales I've brewed. The malt character dominates here, but is complemented nicely by the Belgian yeast spiciness. Highly recommended.

Great Beer
Just kegged this beer yesterday. Two weeks primary and 2 weeks secondary with an O.G. of 1.054 and F.G. of 1.010. This is a great kit and easy to brew. The description is spot on with the flavor......Great taste and aroma.....will definitely brew this kit again!!

Killer beer
Made a starter with WYeast 3711. I was sure to ferment pretty warm and the FG ended up at 1.004, which gave me a 6.3% ABV. Very pleased with the beer's taste, mouthfeel and aroma. A great farmhouse ale that has been loved by everyone, even non-beer fans! Went 2 weeks primary and 2 weeks secondary.

Unique taste... malty, drinkable... subtle hops.
This is a very unique beer. I have brewed over 150 kits & have nothing to compare this to. It is like a mild saison, brown ale combo with almost no bitterness or hoppiness. Worth a test drive to see if you like it. I would prefer a little more hoppiness, so I probably won't brew this one again.

First Farmhouse style
My sixth extract kit, the description sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a try. Fermented in prinary for about 8 days, moved to secondary for 17 days. Beer has a nice light amber color as described. A bit stronger phenol tones than expected. Probably due to higher than desired temperatures in the primary. We had some hot days and the temp in hte primary jumped to 76- 78 degrees a couple of days. It has mellowed out a bit since it has been bottled on 7/21. Gravities have been spot on and has a decent kick. Will probably try again in the future and pay closer attention to primary fermtation temperatures.

Something Different
I'm primarily an IPA, scotch, and Irish ale guy so I thought I would give this Belgium farmhouse ale a try for a change of pace. When I was boiling the wort the aroma from the hops was amazing. I just bottled it last week and I am looking forward to trying out my 1st bottle in another week at which point I will update my review. I did of course try some right out the secondary and this ale has a lot of flavor for it's modest SG. The one thing I did notice is that the phenol production by the yeast was higher than I expected but still modest. I'm not a big fan on high phenolic producing yeast so I may brew this kit again and use the California lager yeast that NB recommended for their Biere DeGarde kit in the past. The color is almost exactly like it looks in the picture, we'll see what the head looks like when it's carbed. If you like Belgium ales this is worth giving a try.

Great spring drinker
The description is spot on. Hit the numbers with no problem. I did a yeast starter to help it along and it finished in a week. Kegged for 2 more weeks and it has been a hit!!
