Superior to a carboy, the Big Mouth Bubbler® Plastic is a virtually indestructible fermentor, equipped with 3” thick anti-flex ribs, a punted bottom and decreased base diameter for extreme strength and durability. Its smaller footprint preserves precious brew cave space and allows for convenient storage inside a standard brewing bucket.

The punted bottom promotes crystal-clear beer by efficiently settling out yeast from finished fermentations. Graduation marks make volume measurement instant and effortless. And, of course, its revolutionary wide mouth eliminates the nightmare of cleaning and sanitizing by giving you direct hands-on access to attack crusted krausen, while simultaneously offering unlimited flexibility in dry-hopping and flavor additions.

Included: Big Mouth Bubbler® - 5 Gallon Plastic Fermentor, single-port universal lid.
Required: Small Universal Stopper & airlock. Configure options below.

Product Details

Superior to a carboy, the Big Mouth Bubbler® Plastic prevents off-flavors by enabling you to keep the lid on during testing and transfer, avoiding exposure to oxygen with standard-sized ports that can accommodate most fermentation-monitoring equipment. Best of all, it will not shatter when dropped or knocked.

The new Big Mouth Universal Lid (included) fits all Big Mouth Bubbler® Fermentors. The Big Mouth Bubbler® Universal Lid is just like a traditional carboy bung, only bigger! Just as easy to sanitize and set in place too. Ribbed silicone rings ensure a positive seal to keep out pests, while the non-threaded design allows the lid to move preventing an out-of-control fermentation from dangerously pressurizing your fermentor.

The optional Dual Port Lid allows for the use of a temperature controller probe. The ThermoStar Dual-Mode Digital Temperature Controller with optional 12" stainless probe ensures precise and repeatable fermentation temperatures!

Lid ports work with our Small Universal Stopper or a standard 6.5 rubber stopper.

Important Note: Do not fill any Plastic Big Mouth Bubbler® fermenters with very hot liquid - temp should not exceed 140 degrees Farenheit (60 celcius)

Note: We recommend a soft cloth for cleaning the inside. Standard carboy brushes will scratch plastic fermenters leaving places for grime to hide. A warm cleaning solution will suffice. Do not use hot water on plastic fermenters of any sort. The Big Mouth Bubbler® is compatible with a standard carboy dryer when the dryer is used inverted.

*Pro Tip: Save your box and use it as a cover for your fermenter!

5 gallon fermenters are best for the secondary conditioning stage of beer fermentation. The smaller size eliminates extra airspace in the fermenter reducing the chances of oxidation which can stale the beer prematurely. Also available as a 6.5-gallon primary fermentor.

Fine product
As always, I read the reviews about this product before I purchased it. Too many are in the 'bad' category. It almost kept me from purchasing it. The biggest issue seemed to be with the lid not sealing. Well, it's plastic. Of course you aren't going to get a solid seal without adding a few layers of plumbers tape. I have another plastic fermenter that actually said that in the instructions. Perhaps this company should include such instructions? Come on people. Stop bashing products just because they do not preform to your 100% expectations when without a very minor addition. I think this is likely a good company and I know it is a good product. I'm half way through my first batch and am very pleased.

Big Mouth Bubbler 5 Gal
I bought this one to replace my 6 gal, whose bottom cracked for no reason (while soaking, sitting on a rubber anti-fatigue mat; came back and the water was down about a third, then noticed the crack as I dumped it. But this is a review of the replacement). I like it for the same reasons I liked my 6: the big mouth allows me to dry hop or add a hop bag of cacao nibs and PB2 for my PB Cup Porter, to keep things less sludgey in the carboy. As I recall reading in the description, the 5 gal is good for secondary, which is what I use it for; it wouldn't have the headroom for a hearty primary fermentation. I have to agree with others, though, that the new lid is a problem. I tried it out, and it slowly popped up as the pressure increased; I had to replace it mid-secondary with the old top and ring from my deceased 6-gal. They need to correct this quickly, or it would be a deal breaker for any new purchases. I think if they combined the new design with those gaskets, sized it to fit such that the ring would fit over it and screw down around it like the old one, and that would resolve both the air leakage of the old cap, as well as the 'creepage' of the new cap. (IMHO)

Good for open air fermentation...
New plunger style lid will not stay sealed - wet or dry.

Response from Northern Brewer
Thank you for contacting us. As with fermentor buckets, when there is that much pressure pushing up and out the lids can sometimes come off. The lid coming off won't harm your beer since there is so much CO2 off-gassing during primary. The nice thing about the lid coming off is that the pressure is escaping instead of building to a point where the fermentor could shatter. If you are wanting to keep the lid down however leaving something heavy on top or taping it down should help. As fermentation settles down though there will be less pressure pushing on the lid. If you still have any more questions or concerns I am just an email away.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the Big Mouth Bubbler Plastic does have indentations as markings but does not have numbers 1 - 5 or .
You have to count them to determine at what level you are at.
How can I seal the lid? It keeps popping up.
A shopper on Feb 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There are a few tricks that can help get you bubbling away happily.

First, I would sanitize the lid and let it air dry a bit before inserting. Press one side of the lid in first, then the opposing side. Lift up the lid in places until you see and feel the ribs on the lid gasket "lock" into place. It should feel noticeably tight once you do so.

If a tight fit is not attainable with the normal insertion technique above, you're still in luck. Remove the lid, take the gasket off, and reinstall the gasket upside down. The ribs on the gasket will engage in a much tighter manner. You'll still want to install it according to the above instructions, but I think you'll find that it grabs much more.
I have the new style "push down lid". It will not stay on "sealed". I read online that someone suggested taking the screw down component and shaving down the lip of the new lid to make a hybrid as the new lids don't stay on. Please sell the screw down pieces so we can make this modification

BEST ANSWER: We do not yet have those style lids available for sale, but we are looking at this and several other options for improving the seal of these lids. Hopefully we will have something soon for you.
Does this product for $29.99 come with a lid and airlock? A lid is shown in the image, but I can't tell by the product details. Thanks!
C H on Jan 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Charlotte,

It comes with the lid, but the stopper and air lock come separately. The stopper that fits is:

And the air lock options are:

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Charles
I am downsizing from 5 gallon to 2.5 3 gallon because I am retired and live by myself . Since I am, how will this work out for me? Thanks
L A on Oct 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Well

if you are making beer

it should work well still

just not for long term storage (3+ months) of a beer product. If you are doing simple 1-

week primaries with optional 1-

weeks secondaries

the larger vessel could still work well. I routinely start a

gallon batch in a 5 or 6 gallon wide mouth fermentor

and I usually secondary in a

gallon carboy

but I have secondaried in 5 gallons before and it works fine. I just would not let it go for very long. I hope this helps explain what situations it works well for!
How do you seal the lid? If it does not seal, can you send me one that does? Or should I return it?
