Very effective means of aerating wort
I bought this strainer before brewing my third batch with the intention of catching sediment as I poured my wort from the kettle to the primary, and in hopes of aerating my wort in the process. I was not disappointed on either front. I was able to dump the entire kettle (~3 gallons) without concern for the sludge in the bottom, which I think will increase my yield by a bottle or two, and the strainer caught all the undesirable sediment as far as I could tell. Regarding the aeration, this batch has produced the most furious, immediate, and healthy fermentation of the three batches I have done. Fermentation began in a matter of hours, and the airlock has had a nearly continuous stream of bubbles, so much so that the water in the airlock has never been still for even a few seconds over the past 3 days. I have brewed with a swollen package of Wyeast everytime, had the same wort temperature before adding the yeast, and located the primary in the same environment each time. The only differentiating factor is the aeration provide by this strainer. The strainer is a large, well made item that balances nicely on top of your bucket. It covers the bulk of the opening on the bucket, giving a nice big target to hit when dumping your kettle. As far as I am concerned, this item is a must have!

Quality
This appears to be a quality product thus far. I have high expectations for its longevity (only used it twice so far). It feels really sturdy holding over 5lbs of wet grain.

Super strainer
This is one really quality and durable strainer! I've broken the handles off two standard stainless kitchen strainers or had problems putting them on a typical 5 or 6 gallon bucket. This one works great. The way the handle is a part of the strainer gives it the feel that it should last a very long time. Great product and wish I had gotten it sooner.

Heavy duty
This thing has held up to 15lbs of wet grain in my BIAB setup without a problem. I've done 4 batches with it and it seems to be holding up well.

Sturdy gear
Well-made and perfect to sit atop a 5-gallon mash pot and hold 6 pounds of steeped grain. Made sparging easy!

Not very happy
Worked great as far as the straining bit goes. Not so sure about the stainless part. I let it soak over night in easy clean(maybe I shouldn't have done that) and now it's got rust on the basket and the rim.

Response from Northern Brewer
Hi Julius,

Thanks for filling out a review. I'm sorry that your strainer rusted. Generally, we would recommend not leaving metal materials in cleaning solutions for extended periods of time. However, if you'd like to contact us, we would be happy to work on a resolution for you.

Great addition to the basic brew kit
Used the strainer for the first time. Really worked well- kept the gunk out of my brew.

FAR Superior to a funnel filter insert
I bought a second so that I could rinse the filtered hops in one while staring the wart with the other.

I received my strainer. Upon opening the box I noticed the coarse screen is on the outside with the fine screen on the inside. What good does coarse screen do if the wort goes through the fine screen first. Is this how the strainer was designed, or is the one I received the one that slipped by quality control? I just can't make sense of it...

BEST ANSWER: That is how mine is too. I agree it doesn't make much sense but if it were the other way sediments would be caught in between the meshes and hard to clean. If it separated for cleaning that would be better with course first and find after. But I don't think with the current set up you would like it reversed. Though I agree the course mesh seems superfluous. Good luck
What is the size of the mesh? (Example 400, 300 microns)

BEST ANSWER: Sorry, I do not know the exact specs of the strainer. But I do know that it is the best strainer I've come across. Depending on what you are straining, it works sometimes too well. It works best when you strain out the large particles first (coarse strainer or strainer bags.... then use the strainer to take care of the fine stuff.
Hi .. I'm going to be brewing some beer soon! What do I use this strainer for? I did buy one from here too with a deluxe brewing kit too with a few more things on the way.

Thank you!

BEST ANSWER: Hello Jeff,

That strainer has many purposes. One would be using it in a BIAB brew when you sparge your grains. It is also nice to use to filter your wort as it goes into the fermenter. This works best by lining the strainer with a fine mesh bag to catch the trub. It is basically just a great tool for straining out particulate matter from beer.
how do I use it? I'm new here.. thank you

BEST ANSWER: Hey Jeff,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! The instructions for use of the stainless steel strainer are dependent on what you are using the strainer for. What will you be using it for?
What's the diameter?
John T on Jan 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello Johnny,

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! The diameter of the basket is 10.25". I hope that this helps!
