Pros and Cons
The kit is okay. It comes with almost everything you would want to start brewing cider. I wanted to supplement the kit with a hydrometer and some other things. The thermometer strips that came with the kit were worthless. I ended up throwing them out. They didnt work. Also I think the yeast was old. I was very careful about washing and sanitizing. I added the yeast st the correct temperature. It clouded up and smelt a little yeasty the first day and then just petered out. It was at a room temp of 72 degrees. After 5 days the juice cleared up. So the apple juice that cake with the kit was wasted and I had to reorder yeast etc. When it arrives I will just follow the Basic Recipe in Emma Christensons, Modern Cider.

So happy with the overall equipment, not so crazy with the results of the first attempt at brewing with the kit.

I'm allergic to hops and it's nice to have an alternative while everyone else is making beer. As everyone else pointed out the instructions need updated because the kit no longer includes Bentonite, but it's not a big deal to just skip that part. When it comes to adding the sweetener do not, even if you practically survive on sugar, add the entire packet of sweetener. I added somewhere between half and a third and the ciders came out way too sweet. I would almost say a half a packet should be your maximum.

Otherwise this is a really nice kit. The process is really simple and the included DVD helps if you're a visual learner. This was far and away a much more simple process then the beer brewing kit I gave my boyfriend for Christmas and I probably spent half the time he did total on preparing it to ferment even with two different fermentation processes.

It was a gift for one of my sons. He was pretty excited and had his brother who was visiting assist him in setting it up. His brother makes his own beer and suggested your company.

4 stars for now...
Same challenges as Jacob B...it's a shame that 4 months has gone by and no updates to the instructions as it is quite confusing and requires a search on the web to update.

There are 2 yeast packets and two packets one called Kieselsol and one Chitosan. No Bentonite.

Looking at the Q&A sections others have had the same issue and there was a response that the recipe was altered to no longer need the Bentonite (but no updated recipe in the Q&A Response which would have been helpful).

I'm in primary fermentation now so hopefully it all comes out well.

Rest of the items in the kit - all was well packaged and easy to use.

I've done 4 batches of beer from kits, this is the first attempt at cider. So far much easier than beer - minus the challenges with the instructions. Would be a very good intro to brewing!

Christmas present for my son
Bought this kit as a Christmas present for my son. Kit is all inclusive and he is looking forward to making hard cider. He and I have made beer using Northern Brewer kits and recommend them highly!

Missing benenite packet, confusing direstions
As a first time brewer I was excited when I received my crooked apple starter kit in the mail for my birthday. When I opened it up I went throught the check list to make sure all the parts were there. Then once I started the processI realized there were conflicting instructions on the various packets that were included and the two sheets of instructions and the DVD. So I kind of just made things work and kept going. Then I got to the part where you actually start combining things and I went to add the benenite as instructed in the video and there was no benenite packet in the crooked cider box. There were also two different kinds of yeast and no specification on which to use. I ended up having to run to a local brew store and get some benenite. It was after hours for their service line as well and I was unable to call and get assistance with any of this. I'm still in the fermenting phase so I can't say anything beyond the initial phase, however so far its not been the best experience.

It's a great start but has a few flaws
I bought this kit so my dad and I could try our hand at making some hard cider since we both have a love for the taste and flavours from other hard ciders on the market. Shipping was crazy fast, everything was 100% secure, and they even included a small book of other products! Upon putting everything together there were a lot of things that were confusing/misleading. Certain things on the instructions were called differently than on the parts list, two of the liquids that you put in the batch were referred to as something different nor were they even mentioned, (referring to Bentonite but instead it was a packet of Wine Yeast called Lalvin) the instructions show that you need a Liquigel packet but there was only two packets of a clear liquid one called Kieselsol and another called Chitosan. Just a bunch of confusion with different names and products especially after watching Northern Brewer's youtube video and seeing the Liquigel but not seeing it in my box...Coming from a new brewer just starting it was very confusing and a little frustrating but other than that everything was top notch quality! Can't wait to see how it all comes out!

Incomplete Kit and Bad Yeast
After opening my starter kit to take inventory against the directions noticed that the kit was missing the bentonite (step one) so I had to go buy some. Second disappointment was bad yeast. After about 2 days with no fermentation, had to get another yeast pack and redo - that worked. About to rack into second fermentation, so we will see on the results.

Great Kit
My wife got this for me, as she's got a gluten allergy and can't enjoy all the beer I make, so this made sense. Super easy to use and very simple. Was a little surprised on the low yield, but I imagine that's because I am used to making 5 gallon batches. Only filled 10 bottles of cider, but I can't wait to try it.

Does it come with the actual bottles? i see in the video that it shows them, but its not noted on the list, I wanted to double check.
N A on Nov 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No bottles are included with the Crooked Apple Hard Cider Starter Kit.
Hi, my kit came with two different yeast packages. One package is Lavlin 1118 and the other package is Safcider yeast. Which yeast package should I use?
A shopper on Jan 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Sorry for any confusion. Either pack can be used but I would suggest using the Safcider as it is for use with cider.
How long of a process is this from start to drinking day? Just curious what our timeline would look like.
E M on Aug 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I ended up letting my cider sit for quite a while - something around 6 months in all and it ended up great. Also, not the topic - be extremely careful with how much of that sweetener you add. A full packet of that means, sickly, cloyingly sweet. I wanted mine to be sweeter, and I should have left it at 1/3 to 1/2 packet at most.
The recipe/instructions call for bentonite to added with the juice, but none was included with my kit. Ok to omit?
N I on Jul 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: None was included in my kit either. However I have able to get my cider to clear by adding the Chitosan and Kieselsol liquid packs that were provided. If that don't work for you, you may have add some time to secondary fermentation or re-rack (transfer the cider another carboy) one more time.
As we get closer to drinking day, we notice some particulates floating around. We think it is the final bits of the fizzy drops (a lot of the particulate is at the bottom and it is still 3 days left of the 14). Is this a possible sign of contamination? We used reclaimed bottles from a party and ran them through a hobart cleaning machine, is that enough?
M M on Feb 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Sediment at the bottom of the bottle is normal. The best thing to do is to open one up and try it. If it looks, smells, or tastes foul, you may have contamination. The hobart should have done a good job cleaning the bottles, but I would still have recommended using a sanitizing solution before bottling.
Are all of the items in this kit dishwasher safe?
R I on Oct 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The glass fermentors and the stainless spoon are

however generally I would not recommend running a fermentor through the dishwasher as most dishwasher detergents leave a residue that's not visible by eye. Fortunately

this equipment is pretty easy to clean by hand.

Is there a stable temperature cider needs to ferment at? Or just any stable temperature?
A shopper on Dec 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Not too hot, not too cold.
Too hot and you get some icky flavors. Too cold and nothing happens.
60-72 degrees is good, somewhat colder can be OK too, but will take longer.

If you search for "howtomakehardcider" you can find some web pages that include helpful information.

Have fun!
Is the flavor similar to an Angry Orchard Crisp Apple?
A shopper on Apr 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. It is sweeter. You can make it dry tasting like an Angry Orchard by using champagne yeast. You may have to back sweeten with a non-fermentable sugar to get the flavor you want. I use wine conditioner to back sweeten. A little goes a long way. The fizzy drops made mine taste like candy and wouldn't carbonate the bottles. I now force carbonate in a keg before bottling.
When will this be back in stock?
F R on Nov 26, 2015

We expect this to be back in stock in early December.
Can I use wine conditioner ( Sucrose, Potassium Sorbate ) to sweeten the cider?
N C on Nov 12, 2015

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! You most definitely can use wine conditioner to sweeten the cider. Have a great day!
Is the sweetener included in the kit a natural sugar, or something artificial like aspartame or saccharine?
D A on Nov 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The sweetener is sucralose. It has to be an unfermentable fake sugar so the resulting cider tastes sweet. Normal sugar would be fermented and so not sweet. It can be left out when making the cider though. Cheers! James J.
The hardware all looks compatible, so ... would I be able to also use this equipment as an expansion to my existing 1 gal ale setup? Glass fermentors shouldn't present a problem going and forth, should it, i.e. no cross-flavors? My current 5 gal (extract) setup uses a standard plastic primary ... could that be used for larger cider batches, or is all glass preferred because of the (I assume) higher acidity involved.
Robert K on Sep 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You can make cider and beer in the exact same fermentors and use the same equipment. If you have an alternative 1 gallon set up

it should work fine and there is no worry for cross contamination as long as everything is cleaned well!
what is the alcohol content by volume?
C O on Sep 21, 2015
Can I use this kit to make cider out of any juice or just Apple? what about pear, starfruit, strawberry?
C A on Sep 21, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The equipment will work no problem. The additives and yeast would need to be purchased separately. I would find a recipe online and edit it to 1 gallon.
Wondering if there is a way to make this cider very dry? I love a good dry cider and am interested in starting to brew my own
L E on Sep 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This cider will ferment to dryness

then you add an unfermentable sugar source to sweeten it up. At that point

just either add less or none of it

based on taste.
How many bottles will this make and how alcoholic is it? I can't find any specs
S C on Aug 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It makes about a gallon of cider. That is roughly 10 - 12 oz bottles.
