Product details

Omega Yeast OYL-401 Sundew's ripe strawberry, passion fruit, pear, and stone fruit combine to emphasize desirable notes in modern fruity hops. This Omega Yeast exclusive strain was inspired by its parental strain's fruity esters, which were originally obscured by Belgian phenolic character. Sundew™, however, is non-phenolic and incapable of producing the spicy clove flavors that were previously competing with its pure, juicy red-fruit bouquet. Try it in your next English ale for a new spin on fruity English yeast.

Yeast Characteristics:

  • Temp Range: 65 - 78°F
  • Attenuation: 72 - 85%
  • Flocculation: High
  • Alcohol Tolerance: 12%
  • Non-Phenolic (POF-)

Recommended styles and recipe kits to highlight Sundew's ripe strawberry esters :

For some nerdy homebrewing fun we recommend trying a split batch of your favorite recipe with OYL-401 Sundew™ and its phenolic parent yeast OYL-024 Belgian Ale A. The characteristics between the two strains are the same minus the phenolic characters, allowing you to see how the phenolic characters can mask fruity esters. Nerd out even more and try blending the two in the same batch, allowing for more control in how much spicy peppery character in your end product. Below are the recipe kits with Sundew's parental strain OYL-024 Belgian Ale A as a recommended yeast option.

Cautiously optimistic

I wasn't sure what to expect but had high hopes for my chocolate berry stout. The aroma smells like you are laying in a field of strawberries & the flavor is a nice balance of red berry that combined really well with the heavy handed approach on the pale chocolate malt. Will def order again.

Blue Loon w/ Sundew

I used this for the Blue Loon recipe and it turned out really well. I wanted something to compliment the orange in this recipe and it brings a nice overall sweetness balanced with the coriander.

Used on blueberry mead

We did 2, 5 gal batches of blueberry mead. Made 2, 1/2 gal Starters, and both taste great.
The mead at 8%abv went completely dry, while the one at 12% stayed semi-sweet. I don't get any esters off this.Tho, there's a lot of fruit packed into these. Zero yeast smell, or taste in eather pitching, during primary, or any of the secondarys (3rds-4ths(racking)). I'm gonna bang out a traditional soon, just to see what this yeast is actually doing. I have zero complaints!

I have actually already picked up another pack, and will probably use this yeast quite often.

Great ale yeast for mead meads too!

Probably awesome

Still sitting in the fridge. Can't wait to use it.

Strawberries!

The strawberry ester is delicious. The way I’ve gotten the yeast to produce it reliably is running fermentation on the warm end of the range (e.g., start at 69-70 and slowly ramp up a degree per day to 75). I accidentally let this strain go up to 82 in a saison (co-pitched alongside a true saison strain) and there were no off flavors—just strawberry from Sundew and lemon pepper + bubblegum from the saison strain.
