Product details

Copper-red with a fruity, slightly spicy aroma and flavor that comes from a combination of yeast and hops.

Not your typical amber ale patterned after Belgian-style pale ales, which might be described as slightly less bitter, more fruity versions of English pale ales. Our Phat Tyre kit is copper-red with a fruity, slightly spicy aroma and flavor that comes from a combination of yeast and hops. A blend of Munich, caramel and Victory malts creates a sweet, toasty, bready character that lingers from the aroma through the finish.

OG Fat Tire

New Belgium Brewing changed their flagship beer, but this recipe stays true to the original beer. Will brew again!

Phat Tyre Clone - Interpreting the recipe

Better than the original. Dunno if that’s the brewer or the recipe. :)

Pretty good Fat Tire clone -- very drinkable

I'm not buying many kits these days, because I prefer to research and come up with my own recipes. But the sale deal for this kit was too good to pass up: 3 kits at $25 each. That was great deal. This is a very drinkable beer, and pretty close to New Belgian's Fat Tire. I love Belgians, and while this is not quite as good as what I've been able to come up with, it's still damn good.

Note: I originally bought this kit "crushed." But the crush was so fine, my mash stuck multiple times, and I had 2 "E-3" errors on my Anvil Foundry (E-3 error means the heating element fouled with burned on malt dust -- requiring emptying the kettle to clean and reset -- big PITA). When I complained to NB about this they replaced all the kits... (this time -- since I had subsequently acquired a mill -- with uncrushed grain). NB makes good!. I do find that NB kits are a little light when it comes to base malts, I typically add about 2lbs of base malt to their kits.

Belgian Ale turned out great. Pulling on the tap right now and it won’t last long

This is a fabulous all grain beer. Lots of work but great flavor. My friends all love it.
