Notes from Brad, Northern Brewer Development Brewer:
As evidenced by a wildly popular beer produced in the Pacific Northwest, the combination of Citra and Mosaic hops is an instant classic. Late hops additions provide an extraordinary sipping experience full of luscious fruit flavors and aromas. To keep this beer from being a one-trick pony, a fairly modest addition of toasty Munich malt and American caramel malt round out the flavor profile and provides a background for the Citra and Mosaic to shine.
This was my first all grain brew. I picked up some all-grain equipment from a local craft brewery that didn’t have a use for home brew equipment anymore.
What a tasty IPA! My first batch with the brewing equipment I have, I managed really great efficiency rates with the mashing process. My specific gravity post boil was 1.070 and my post fermentation was 1.005.
8.53 ABV!! Pine and grapefruit flavored. Very drinkable!
I used a yeast starter (fast pitch) with Imperial Flagship A07 yeast (24hrs before), Wyeast nutrients, and a whirlfloc tablet.
I did this brew a second time and it came out even better! My primary fermentation I put 3 grapefruits diced up in it, then transferred to a secondary after 2 weeks. It was amazing! It was the hit of the party when I brought it.
I will definitely be buying this again.
Good citrus flavor, but not overly fruity.
Yeah, I could put together my own grain bill, hops, etc, but for the price, this recipe is a no-brainer. I do recommend upping the dry hop to 2oz each of citra and mosaic, or experiment with your own variations...Mandarina Bavarina, sabro, Amarillo, galaxy, etc all play nice with this recipe. Be sure to balance your water profile for a soft and smooth drinking ipa experience.
Love this recipe. My second time making it. Forgot to dry hop, but it still turned out wonderfully. My buddies love it. Definite repeat.
