Brewmaster Brad’s Notes:
“A single hop beer? Often times recipes like this can fall flat due to a lack of complexity from a one-trick-pony hop variety. This is certainly not the case with Mighty Axe’s Zenia variety. Genetically the Zeus strain, Zenia is anything but. Thanks to atypical harvest and storage methods, Zenia is an incredibly multi-faceted hop perfect for any addition, kettle or fermenter.
Mighty Axe Hops bucks tradition by harvesting this variety a bit later in the season and then baling and aging for months before pelletizing. Coupled with the unique terroir of central Minnesota, the result is a high oil content to really bring the flavor, and a complete lack of any onion or garlic character that can be quite common in traditionally harvested and processed Zeus hops.
As one of our IT geeks (and former professional brewer) put it, “This is quite possibly the busiest hop I have ever come across.” He is not wrong. Expect flavors of dank resin and jammy orange that mingle together so perfectly you’d think that this recipe utilizes several hop varieties. I know you will be impressed with this hop just as I was (and still am). Once you have a pint of this beer, you will surely be motivated to check out Mighty Axe’s other equally awesome hops.”
I used this kit as an experiment in hop bursting. I will report back when it's finished and the tasting results are in.
Was willing to give the Zenia hop a try and looked like its showcase. Clean, crisp, refreshing beer, but based on the description perhaps I was expecting too much from the hop. Did not get a lot of dankness. Decent IPA but it did not wow me.
Easy to brew kit with a blend of old school dank and new school haze. I had some Citra left over so I added a 1oz aroma addition. Overall I really like the flavor of this beer and it's a welcome change from the haze craze.
The write made it sound delicious but I'm not feeling it at all. They got the Dank resinous flavor right but unfortunately it is just too overpowering to me. It also has a long lasting bitterness bite, which I don't care for.
