Tilt™ - Black Digital Hydrometer and Thermometer
The Tilt Digital Hydrometer and Thermometer is at the cutting edge of new digital devices made specifically for the homebrewing community. This free-floating gadget acts as both a real-time gravity testing hydrometer and thermometer from inside your fermenter during fermentation.
Being able to check your fermentation status from your compatible Apple iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Tilt Pi and most Bluetooth 4.0+ Bluetooth devices means virtually no susceptibility to contamination or oxygen pickup in your fermenter. Data can be saved automatically to the cloud with free Google Sheets template or your own, favorite 3rd party cloud platform.
Tilt comes calibrated and fully-assembled with a pre-installed battery. Download the free app, sanitize the unit, drop into the fermenter and start tracking your readings with your synced device.
Multiple Unit Users: If using more than one Tilt Hydrometer and Thermometer at a time, you must use a different color Tilt for each batch. Apps will not read multiple hydrometers of the same color. Northern Brewer offers 8 different colors for multiple, simultaneous fermentations.
Range: Ability to send data through large, thick-walled fermenters.
Precision: Specific gravity is accurate within +/- 0.002 if brewing in the range of .990 - 1.120. Thermometer is accurate within +/- 1 degree fahrenheit.
Universal: Works in most standard carboys, corny kegs, refrigerators, stainless steel fermenters, even under pressure!
We love our new tilt hydrometer! No more checking the gravity in those little fragile tubes, it goes straight to our phone! And it popped right out of our carboy no problem!
SG within .001 and temp within 1degree out of the box requiring only a minor offset. You would definitely need a repeater if you are using a SS fermenter and wanted to log data. I could only connect to the Tilt within about 20 to 30 feet when it was in my Grainfather conical. When used in a Big Mouth fermenter, I had a much greater range.
I’ve had a Tilt™ - Digital Hydrometer and Thermometer in use for a couple of years. This was a second to cover my other fermenter. I rely on these to ensure I get my primary and secondary fermentations right. And of course the ABV too.
Currently using it for the first time right now in a 5 gallon batch of Black IPA (almost 2 weeks in a primary). Still working out the cloud and other technical details regarding the readings and spreadsheets. That said, it turned on right away and seems to accurately measure both gravity and temperature. Range in a glass carboy is really good. The carboy is in my basement yet I can get readings anywhere on the first floor -- and even upstairs on the second floor. Set up with the phone was extremely easy and I am looking forward to seeing what readings I get after the batch is close to being ready for bottling.
Bought this to monitor temperature and gravity in my fermenter. I had just recently added temperature control and the Tilt helped provide data throughout my fermentation.
I logged data to the Google sheet as well as Brewer's Friend to see how those platforms worked. Both were easy to work with, providing graphs and raw data feed from the Tilt.
The one issue I did run into was finding a way to get the Tilt connected back to my network. I wound up using an old cell phone and the Tilt app to do this. However, the phone took some fiddling as the app had to be active (i.e. phone cannot go to sleep or lock). Android phone, developer mode, and setting the screen not to lock did the trick for me. It took some futzing, but I finally got there. In the future, I'll employ a TiltPi to act as a bridge.
Other than that, two thumbs up. I'd love to have another one to run multiple batches!
