Tilt™ - Black Digital Hydrometer and Thermometer
The Tilt Digital Hydrometer and Thermometer is at the cutting edge of new digital devices made specifically for the homebrewing community. This free-floating gadget acts as both a real-time gravity testing hydrometer and thermometer from inside your fermenter during fermentation.
Being able to check your fermentation status from your compatible Apple iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Tilt Pi and most Bluetooth 4.0+ Bluetooth devices means virtually no susceptibility to contamination or oxygen pickup in your fermenter. Data can be saved automatically to the cloud with free Google Sheets template or your own, favorite 3rd party cloud platform.
Tilt comes calibrated and fully-assembled with a pre-installed battery. Download the free app, sanitize the unit, drop into the fermenter and start tracking your readings with your synced device.
Multiple Unit Users: If using more than one Tilt Hydrometer and Thermometer at a time, you must use a different color Tilt for each batch. Apps will not read multiple hydrometers of the same color. Northern Brewer offers 8 different colors for multiple, simultaneous fermentations.
No additional information.
Range: Ability to send data through large, thick-walled fermenters.
Precision: Specific gravity is accurate within +/- 0.002 if brewing in the range of .990 - 1.120. Thermometer is accurate within +/- 1 degree fahrenheit.
Universal: Works in most standard carboys, corny kegs, refrigerators, stainless steel fermenters, even under pressure!
I’ve been using the tilt for the last week and is working as stated. Monitoring the gravity in real time has really gave me information I previously didn’t have or saves time from needing to measure with a refractor. Simple to use and app works great! Still waiting to transfer to a secondary so I can measure the accuracy with a glass hydrometer.
Great tool to keep in the tool box. Is it needed, absolutely not. However, it’s definitely cool to watch fermentation and know exactly when it’s done. It will not replace your glass hydrometer for accurate readings as you will find the readings from the tilt are more for treading. If you have to means to get one I’d say go for it, but just know it’s not a must. It’s just another tool.
Accurate, easy to use and gives a good "read" on exactly when I wanted to dry hop.
Tilt works as advertised. By far the easiest way to measure and track the fermentation process. I wish you could setup the app to see a history rather via a download. Also I think at the end of the day the price is a bit high for what you get.
I am using the tilt with a raspberry PI 3. Logging my data to the PI and periodically download the data manually. Could not get the cloud logging to work. Very light on user information. (Does anybody know what up-time means in the logs?)
How accurate is it...good accuracy but you must remember that bubbles and other fermentation activities will skew the readings. When I first drop it in the readings are low. I whip up a big froth (foam) when I first fill my fermenter. The foam skews the SG.
Periodically I download the logs and review both the temperature and SG. This is a great way to track the fermentation progress.
Is this a must have??? NO but, it provides information that can be used on subsequent batches to fine tune your processes.
I ferment in a 14 gallon Chapman SS bucket. Had to locate my PI within 15 feet of the bucket to get good connectivity to the tilt. BUT IT WORKS WELL.
When setting up your tilt and PI, check your RSSI. I was able to get it between -54 (great) and -73 (good). If you are up in the -90+ range you will start dropping out.
Would have given this 5 stars if there was a better user manual explaining the details of operation.
