Too short
I cannot turn the valve 100% off because it hit against the side of the cooler and on the inside, there is just a little thread to put the coupling on. It needs to be longer on both ends.

Came up short...
The nipple came up short that fits through the cooler. (Orange Home Depot cooler). Barely catches the threads and if I tighten it anymore it crushes the cooler and leaks at higher temps(HLT).

Response from Northern Brewer
Is it possible to thread the coupler out a bit to give more thread depth to the ball-valve side? It can usually be done. Let us know if you cannot use the item!

Spend the $$
Great product. Does what it's supposed to.Just switch the o-rings around from what the picture and the directions (if you can find 'em) shows. It makes no sense to cram the fat gasket into a space obviously designed for a skinny one.

Worth the $$
A month after deciding to go all grain and use a cooler I finally bought one of these. I wish I would have done it sooner - saving about $15 in miscellaneous 'do it yourself' parts, $5 in gas and 6+ hours of spare time. Perfect size to fit the cooler. Well made. Quality rings.Have a look at the instructions to make your life (and your next brew day) even easier. http://www.northernbrewer.com/documentation/CoolerBulkhead.pdf

Works with Coleman square cooler
My biggest fear with this product was it would not work with my 70qt coleman 5 day, and it did! No modification needed, it can be installed as is and seal perfectly, held 2 gallons of water overnight, no loss- note: in my experience my valve barely closes all the way hitting the side of cooler. So based off of the valve you get you may have to get an extension piece.

Works Great!
Used with a 1/2 Blichmann ball valve, two 1/2 to 3/8 reducers, a 12 in false bottom and a Home Depot 10 gl water cooler. Used with my mash tun and hot liquer tank.

Worth the Cost
I purchased this bulkhead to use with a 10 Gallon Rubbermaid Cooler for my mash tun. I also purchased a 12 inch false bottom at the same time. I bought a half-inch brass ball valve from HD. This has been a worth-while purchase. It was easy to install and easy to keep the mash tun from leaking. I subsequently purchased a second 10 Galllon Rubbermaid Cooler to be used as an HLT. I improvised and made my own bulkhead, and purchased the ball valve from HD. I don't like my improvised solution as well. It was slight less expensive, but does not fit as well. I could not find the same silicon O Rings, and it was not as easy to find the metal washer. Because of this, I like the NB Bulkhead better. The NB Bulkhead is now used with a SS Hot Water Tank Braid for my mash tun. It works great and I could not be happier.

great easy way to convert a igloo cooler, but....
I got the bulkhead fitting wit the 1/2 ball valve, it is a pain to install and connect to the false bottom, the inside connector (bulkhead fitting silver cylinder on picture) is touching the false bottom and it looked like my bulkhead fitting is tilted downward, it comes with 2 washers , I removed one and it is a little better but slanted.... I still have to try to brew with it..... and check for leaks.I did buy the 1/2" barb fitting at Lowes ( that is what is touching, the screw part)

Will this bulkhead work with my 10gal Igloo cooler? I have extra 1/2" ball valves lying around. 2 & 3 piece. And exactly how long is the threaded end of the bulkhead? I have extra ones for kettles and was thinking I may be able to use spare nipples and couplers to make a longer bulkhead. I've also got plenty of silicone o-rings of various IDs and ODs, so I'm not worried about that. I'd really appreciate any advice on this since the lower burner under my kettle mash tun is out and makes it hard to keep at temperature or do double decoctions. Cheers!

BEST ANSWER: Not sure about an igloo cooler because I used it in a Rubbermaid cooler. Worked great....although I would've gone with the XL if I was to order another one. Not much thread left to connect ball valve to. Should work fine in the igloo
Is the bulkhead one piece?
