Great coolers for all grain brewing.
Provides plenty of space to do 5 to 6 gallons of brewing. I like how I can give a couple of inches of sparge water when sparging.

This is a workhorse
Ive had the 10 gallon version for a couple months now and made 4 batches. I had some trouble on my first all grain attempt with clogging, but this was my fault as I was too rigorous while adding the grain in. I hit the screen several times and now realize that I must have lifted it from the bottom allowing grain to get underneath it leading to the clogging during the sparging process. I was much more careful during the next 3 batches and have had no issues with clogging since.

I've yet to venture into 10 gallon batches, but intend to do so when I upgrade my brew kettle to a 15 gallon. I don't know about the rest of you, but I seem to go through 5 gallon batches in no time. Lol

I have noticed almost no heat loss during mashing. Have also not had the issue of flimsy handles that someone else raised. I have to admit that I don't try to move them around too much when they are full due to the weight anyway.

My only complaint, and it's the reason I cannot go to 5 stars, is that the spigots always feel like they are going to pop out when opening and closing. I only had one small leak once. Probably due to not having it tight enough. so I can only conclude that this is just the reality of hooking up a metal spigot to a plastic bucket.

Response from Northern Brewer
Sorry to hear if you are having trouble avoiding a stuck sparge by the sounds of it. There are many tricks to avoiding the flow becoming stuck. I'm surprised it got stuck at all

we've had trouble making that happen. Some recipes are more difficult to flow freely like those with rye or wheat or oats. You want to make sure you are adding the right amount of water - try 1.5 qts/lb of grain. You also want to not run the mash too quickly. If you open the valve all the way it will suck all the grain straight into the holes and when the flow starts quickly it quickly compacts over the screen and it could get stuck. Critical to all of this is the crush of the grains. If over crushed the grain will not act as a natural filter which is what makes it possible. I hope these tips helps it work smoother. Let us know if we can help further! Cheers! James J.

Great set, more features than my old NB rubbermaid 10G
I brewed in the old Northern Brewer 10 Gal Rubbermaid cooler for years. It worked great but with really BIG beers I had to add DME. With nearly 2 extra gals of space for the grain bill I'm hoping I'm done with that. Folding handles, streamlined size (narrower/taller) and the fact that it's simply made for brewing make this a no brainer. I have not yet brewed with this set but I'm sure it will be as good or better than the old set. One thing though... and why I only gave this 4/5 stars. When you put the bulkheads on, if your kit is like mine, you MUST omit the smaller front o-ring. If you try to use the small o-ring on the exterior side there will not be enough threads protruding inside to put the big o-ring plus washer (and you need at least one washer) on with the coupler. However, with the silicone insert that is already in place in the spigot orifice you only need the interior larger o-ring. Both my HLT and M/L/T are water tight in this configuration. Even though the kit does come with a small bit of pipe thread tape you will need more so plan on that. Overall though this is a great piece of kit! Can't wait to pop in a 10 Gal batch of imperial IPA and forget about any DME!

GREAT mash tun, definitely bigger than 10 gal Rubbermaid
My 10-gal Rubbermaid has been a faithful servant but it just couldn't hold the grains for my higher-gravity brews (10 gal batch size). When I saw this tun at NB, I was skeptical of the extra 1.7 gal over the Rubbermaid capacity. All of my concerns were put to rest when I brewed with this for the first time. I brewed a 10-gal batch with a mash that goes absolutely to the very top of the rim of my Rubbermaid. In fact, I had to scale back the strike water for this reason. This Fermenter's Favorites tun held all of this grain and water, with ~2 inches to spare at the top. So the extra 1.7 gal capacity is for real. More impressive, however, was that there was virtually NO heat leakage. I periodically felt around this cooler during the mash--the body, the lid, etc. There wasn't a single warm spot. The thermometer at the end of the mash time (60 min, in a 48-degree garage) showed only a 1-degree loss of temp at the end of the hour. I can't say the same for the Rubbermaid. Also, the rubber plug that lines the valve is a nice touch and works very well. If you need a well-built mash tun with the extra capacity, and don't want to futz with a cube or rectangular cooler, this Fermenter's Favorites mash tun is a great choice. "Exceptional heat retention and leak-proofed construction" is for real here.

Do I have to leave the rubber gasket in the hole, or do I take it out? Because I am having problems with the ball valve being able to secure it with the gasket in the hole.
A shopper on Apr 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I'm having the same issue. Do you leave the gasket in the hole?
What is the rated max temp for this cooler? Rubbermaid says their standard 10 Gal cooler is rated for 120 deg F even though people use it much higher.
John B on Mar 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't know what the official rating is, but I routinely fill one with 170F water for an hour or more - never had any problems. On the other hand, even when tightly sealed, wrapped in blankets, and placed outside on a hot day, I find the temp drop is higher than advertised - at least 5 degrees/hour, so when I these for mashing, I find I am adding more hot water every 30 min or so.
What is the inside diameter of the 10 gallon cooler?
A shopper on Feb 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The inside diameter is 11 1/2". A 2.5 gallon torpedo keg fits perfectly inside with room for plumbing.
Would the 10 gallon false bottom I purchased from you for a Rubbermaid cooler fit in the 10 gallon fermentors favorite?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for contacting Northern Brewer. I understand you want to see if the same False Bottom you purchased fits in a 10 gallon cooler is the same size that fits in the 10 gallon pot. If you have the 11.5 inch Titan False Bottom, it will fit in both. Cheers!
Looks like I will need a false bottom and a valve for this. What size false bottom fits the 7 gallon cooler?
A shopper on Mar 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The 11.5 " Titan will work well in this cooler.
Does this item come with any spigot? I also own a MegaPot that was bought from this site, would that spigot work or would I need to purchase a new spigot to make this usable?
A shopper on Feb 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for contacting Northern Brewer. I understand you are wondering what you need to make the cooler usable for brewing. This is just the cooler, you would need to purchase a valve and bulk head assembly and most likely a False Bottom. We sell cooler valves in Bronze or Stainless Steel. If you want to also purchase a Titan False Bottom and a 1/2 NPT x3/8" barb to attach some high temp tubing to the Titan False Bottom. Most of these items are at the bottom of the cooler's webpage in the "you may also be interested in" feature. Cheers!
Does this come with any type of spigot and if not what should I use?
A shopper on Mar 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I believe it only comes with the plastic spigot. It has been a year since I ordered it but I believe I used a Three-piece Ball Valve Stainless 1/2" made by Blichmann and a Cooler Bulkhead.
What is the outer diameter and height of this cooler?
E J on Jun 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The 7 gallon 14" X 19.5" and the 10 gallon is 16" x 22"
10 Gal is rated 11.7 Gal full capacity. What is full capacity of 7 Gal cooler?
John B on Mar 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is exactly 7 gallons.
What are the dimensions of the 10gal model?
J O on Dec 22, 2015

Thank you for choosing Northern Brewer! That cooler has a diameter of 16" and a height of 21.5" I hope that this helps!!
What is the insulation made of in this cooler? Beer Fairy dust? How can the added expense be justified over similar products, given this doesn't even come with a spigot?
M I on Sep 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: A reinforced wall lining and a silicone reinforced hole make for a leak free

sturdy unit when attaching a bulkhead and ball valve. Our items are priced at what they are worth

and come with an excellent warranty. You can purchase with confidence knowing you are getting parts that are designed around each other and for the purpose of home brewing. Cheers!
Can this be used a normal beverage cooler with a hose faucet added?
H O on Sep 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This can be used as a standard beverage cooler. I do not think it would come with a standard cooler spigot

but the included ball valve can be customized to work in most set ups.
What is the thickness of the cooler wall, in particular the 10 gallon model?
